A first-time owner buys an 80m Amels for spring 2029 delivery

Hull 8007, sold three years out

Damen Yachting announced the sale on 10 July. The yacht is listed by the yard as Amels 8007, the seventh hull of the current 80-metre Limited Editions design and one of five in the class not yet delivered. The owner is entering yacht ownership for the first time and was represented by Boatsters Black and Bjorn International Brokerage, whose principals cited the yard's build philosophy and fixed delivery programme.

The builder gives the hull an LOA of 79.80 m, a beam at the hull of 12.5 m, 2,200 GT, 14 guests and 20 crew plus a captain, and a maximum speed of 16.5 knots. Espen Oino International drew the exterior. The interior concept is by Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design, the Dutch studio's first work with Amels, and the naval architecture is Damen Yachting's own.

What the platform already fixes

The current Amels 80 was introduced in 2022. It runs hybrid propulsion on a full displacement hull the yard says was developed to cut fuel burn, emissions and underwater noise. The general arrangement is settled before contract: seven suites, a private owner's deck, a three-sided open beach club, a 6.5 m pool and a 200 square metre sun deck that Amels calls the largest in the class.

Limited Editions is the semi-custom line Amels has run for two decades, with more than 50 delivered hulls behind it once the earlier generations are counted. What a buyer personalises is the interior, the colour scheme and the equipment list. The platform, the engineering and the handover date are decided in advance, and the certainty of those three is what is being sold.

Why a first yacht at 80 metres is the story

The conventional route is a 30-metre production boat, then something in the 50s, then a full custom build years later, each step teaching an owner what to specify next. This buyer skipped all of it and went straight to a yacht that needs 21 people to run. A semi-custom platform makes that jump survivable, because the decisions that punish an inexperienced owner are already taken.

The read-across for anyone weighing a first build is about where the risk sits. A blank sheet leaves price, weight, timetable and specification risk with the owner and his project team. A known hull moves nearly all of it onto the builder, and the builder charges for the transfer. Two brokerage houses sat on the buy side here, which is worth noting on a first purchase.

The order book, and the slot that was already free

Spring 2029 is three years out, but it was not the earliest an Amels 80 could be had this summer. The yard's fleet list shows hull 8005, the fifth of the class, as available for delivery in 2027. Hull 8004 is in build for the same year, 8006 for 2028 and a further 80-metre, Project Altitude, for 2030. Three are delivered: Pangea in 2025, Netto II and Project Zurich in 2026.

The distinction matters to anyone reading this sale as a statement about waiting times. A buyer who wants the yacht sooner takes a hull already on the line and inherits its specification decisions. A buyer who wants the specification from the start accepts the later date, which is what happened here. Eight hulls of one design inside five years is also what gives brokers real comparables at resale.

What the same money buys already floating

Damen Yachting does not publish a price for the Amels 80 and none was disclosed here. The brokerage market supplies the frame. As of late July, SuperYacht Times carries the 80 m Yachtley Elements of 2019 at EUR 112m, the 82 m Oceanco Alfa Nero of 2007 at EUR 88.5m and the 85 m Golden Yachts O'Ptasia of 2018 at EUR 82.5m.

That is the trade a first-time buyer at this size faces. A used 80-metre can be surveyed, boarded and negotiated, and it arrives with a running history and a known crew cost. A 2029 Amels 80 means three seasons with no yacht, a fixed handover and a hull nobody else has lived on. On the evidence of the order book, the yard is finding buyers for the second faster.
