Ngoni

The brief that became a legend

Ngoni's owner arrived at Royal Huisman with an instruction that has entered yachting folklore: "Build me a beast," adding that he did not want a sheep in wolf's clothing. It was a challenge aimed at both designer and yard, produce a very large sloop with genuine aggression, visibly powerful, sailed hard, with none of the softness that usually creeps in at this size.

Dubois Naval Architects answered with a shape unlike anything else in the fleet, a low, lean hull with a plumb bow, minimal superstructure and a vast open aft deck. It was the final superyacht drawn by Ed Dubois before his death, which gives Ngoni a place in design history alongside her performance record, the closing work of one of the great modern yacht architects.

One piece of carbon, 71 metres tall

The engineering centrepiece is the rig. Rondal built Ngoni's 71 metre carbon mast as a single piece, one of the three largest one-piece spars the company has ever produced, and crowned it with a North Sails square-top mainsail. A one-piece spar is stiffer, cleaner and lighter than a joined one, and building it at this length required tooling and confidence very few companies on earth possess.

The sail plan that hangs from it is enormous relative to her displacement, which is the entire point of the beast brief. Ngoni is consistently described in trade press as one of the most innovative sailing yachts ever built, and the innovation is not decorative, it is load paths, structure and sail-handling systems working at the edge of what aluminium and carbon permit.

Build me a beast, the owner told the yard, and the last Ed Dubois superyacht design is exactly that.

Muscular outside, serene within

Rick Baker and Paul Morgan, the London artist-designers, shaped an interior for nine guests in five staterooms that plays deliberately against the exterior's aggression. The finish runs to sculptural furniture and bespoke artwork, executed by the yard's joinery shops to the tolerance Huisman applies to everything. It is a private, collected atmosphere, closer to a gallery apartment than to a conventional yacht interior.

On deck the arrangement stays radically clean. Sailing hardware is hidden or flush, guest space flows without clutter, and the low freeboard keeps everyone close to the water. With nine crew she operates in full service mode, but the design's centre of gravity is the owner's own time aboard, fast passages, big bays, no theatre.

A known quantity on the market

Ngoni has appeared on the brokerage market in recent years, giving qualified buyers a rare chance at a Dubois-Huisman one-off without a five-year build. Trade press has reported asking prices in the tens of millions of euros, and her sales listings document a maintenance history kept to the standard her build deserves.

Scarcity frames the value. There will be no more Dubois designs, the drawing board closed in 2016, and Huisman-built sloops of this character reach the market perhaps once in a cycle. For collectors who read yachts the way others read art, a final work from a major architect, built by the premier yard of its type, is a category of one.

What she proves about the yard

Every shipyard claims flexibility, Ngoni tests the claim. The same halls that produced the classic ketch Aquarius in the same period produced this stripped, aggressive machine, both to identical build standards. Owners can bring Royal Huisman a brief from either end of the aesthetic spectrum and the engineering underneath does not change.

She also shows what the Rondal relationship is worth. The beast brief was only buildable because the spar maker, the naval architect and the hull builder sat within the same project from the first meeting. That integration, rig and hull engineered as one object, is the quiet advantage running through the whole Huisman fleet, and Ngoni is its loudest expression.

Who it is for: The owner-collector who wants a singular, aggressive sailing machine with design-history provenance and no compromise toward convention.

Guide price: Ngoni has been offered for resale with asking prices reported by trade press between EUR 38.5 million and EUR 45 million. Royal Huisman does not publish new-build prices.
