Esteban Ocon's New Williams Tender Copies His F1 Cockpit

The Formula 1 driver spent six months specifying a Williams SportJet 520 down to a quick-release steering wheel lifted straight from his race car, then collected it on the shores of Lake Geneva during the sport's summer break. For an owner who already treats the tender as an afterthought on the order form, it is a reminder that the same bespoke process Williams ran for Ocon is open to anyone buying the boat off the standard price list.

Six Months for a Boat Most Owners Order in an Afternoon

Esteban Ocon, the French Formula 1 driver who took his maiden Grand Prix win at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, collected a fully bespoke Williams SportJet 520 on the shores of Lake Geneva in early August 2026, during the sport's summer shutdown. Williams Jet Tenders and its sister brand Evene Tenders had named Ocon an ambassador in October 2025, and what followed was a six-month specification process most buyers never get near: a standard SportJet 520 is a 5.2-metre, 230-horsepower RIB tender that owners typically order as a line item on a much larger yacht's build sheet, picked in an afternoon from a colour chart. Ocon's took half a year, several rounds of design reviews, and input from Williams' own naval architects on details that do not appear on any options list.

By his own account, the scale of the finished boat caught him off guard. 'It's massive. I was not expecting that,' he said at the handover, a reaction Williams will not mind seeing attached to a tender line that most owners never look at twice. Tom Dowdell, head of marketing at Williams Jet Tenders and Evene Tenders, framed the deal at its announcement as a pedigree play rather than a paint job: 'His passion for performance, precision, and innovation mirrors our own. Seeing someone at the pinnacle of motorsport choose Williams Jet Tenders is a real testament to the quality and reputation of our products.' For an owner speccing a new build, the signal is less about Ocon than about what Williams will now do for a client willing to spend the time: the ambassador program is a shop window for a bespoke service the brand offers everyone, not a one-off favour.

The Detail That Actually Came Off His Race Car

The single feature Ocon called out by name is a quick-release steering wheel, mounted so it detaches the way a Formula 1 wheel does for the driver to climb in and out of the cockpit. 'It's like being in an F1 car. That's amazing,' he said of it. It is a small mechanical borrow rather than a rebadged part - Williams has not disclosed whether any hardware was sourced from Ocon's race team - but it is the kind of detail that only a six-month bespoke process surfaces: nobody speccing a tender from a brochure asks for a quick-release wheel, because nobody knows to ask.

The rest of the customisation is visual rather than mechanical: white bodywork paired with red tubing, a scheme Williams itself flagged as unusual in its own boats, which more often run white-on-grey or white-on-black. The SportJet 520's underlying hardware is unchanged - a supercharged Rotax ACE 1630 producing 230hp, a claimed top speed of 49 knots (Williams' own spec sheet, converted from its published 56mph figure), a 100-litre fuel tank, and seating for seven adults at a dry weight of 670 kilograms. Ocon has raced under Rotax-family power since his karting days, which is the closest the deal comes to a genuine technical link between his day job and the boat, rather than just shared branding.

An Ambassador Deal Ten Months in the Making

The relationship did not start as a sponsorship pitch. Ocon first appeared with a Williams tender in a video he filmed for Meros, a yacht-sharing platform, testing the boat before any formal partnership existed between Ocon and Williams. 'I have been a big fan of the Williams Jet Tenders brand for some time having spent many holidays using their boats,' he said when the ambassador deal was announced in October 2025. Williams Jet Tenders and Evene Tenders, both under the wider Williams Marine Group, run their ambassador roster as a marketing line rather than a discount channel - the company has not said whether Ocon paid list price, a reduced rate, or nothing at all for the boat, and none of the coverage around the handover addresses it.

That silence matters more than it looks. Every other figure in this story - the horsepower, the top speed, the six-month timeline, the tank capacity - is independently confirmable against Williams' own published spec sheet or prior reporting. What the commercial terms of an ambassador delivery actually cost the brand, and what if anything Ocon paid, is not published anywhere, by Williams or by Ocon. An owner reading the coverage should treat the handover as proof of what Williams' bespoke process can produce, not as a price signal for what it costs to get it.

What This Buys an Owner Who Is Not an F1 Driver

The SportJet 520 has been on Williams' line for years - it was already up for a Motor Boat Awards nomination in 2016 - and it sits at the accessible end of the brand's range: a 2021 UK list price of GBP 47,178 including VAT is the last publicly confirmed base figure, and a 2022 example was recently offered for resale at CHF 69,500. Williams does not publish current 2026 pricing on its own site, quoting instead on request, which is standard practice for a builder whose tenders are mostly sold as line items inside a much larger yacht contract rather than as standalone purchases.

What an owner actually gets by asking for the same bespoke route Ocon took is the process itself: Williams will run a full design review on paint, trim, and hardware detailing for any client who wants one, not just an ambassador. The trade-off is time - Ocon's took six months against an off-the-shelf order that ships in weeks - and the absence of a published price for that service. Buyers should also expect no independent verification yet of Ocon's specific boat beyond the manufacturer's own account and the handover-day press coverage: it was delivered only days before this was written, and no sea trial or owner review independent of Williams and Ocon himself exists.
