50m Aluminium FDHF

Heesen built its name on speed, then taught that speed to sip fuel. The 50 m Aluminium FDHF is the yard's answer for owners who want a sub-500 GT yacht that crosses long stretches quietly and arrives without drama. It is the platform that produced Home and Ela, offered with an optional hybrid drive for owners who value silence at anchor.

A Dutch yard, an aluminium habit

Heesen has been shaping fast aluminium hulls in Oss since the late 1970s, and the 50 m Aluminium FDHF distils four decades of that knowledge into a Series owners can order with confidence. The yard offers it as a semi-custom project, engineered in advance so the delivery clock runs short and the surprises stay few. Van Oossanen Naval Architects supply the Fast Displacement Hull Form beneath the waterline, a shape that carries the boat efficiently across a wide band of speeds. For an owner, that means a yacht already proven on paper before the first plate is cut.

The Series sits below 500 GT by design, which keeps the yacht within a friendlier regulatory band and a lighter operating footprint. She measures 49.8 metres with a beam of 9.1 metres and a shallow 2.15 metre draught, so shoreside anchorages and thin Bahamian water stay within reach. Compliance with IMO Tier III sits in the specification from the outset. The result is a boat that behaves like a private residence at anchor and a genuine passage-maker when the owner wants to move.

Omega lines above the water

The exterior is the work of Frank Laupman at Omega Architects, a studio that has drawn many of Heesen's most recognisable profiles. The 50 m carries long horizontal glazing and a low, purposeful sheer that reads as contemporary without chasing fashion. Large windows in the hull and superstructure pull daylight deep into the accommodation. From the dock she looks quick, and the hull form means she is.

Deck space is generous for the length, with a sun-soaked foredeck seating area and a broad aft cockpit that steps down to the water. The flybridge gives the owner an outdoor helm position and room for a spa pool and shaded dining. Tenders and toys stow in a garage that keeps the swim platform clear for guests. Every outdoor zone was planned around how a family actually uses a yacht at anchor.

Fourteen ways to feel at home

Below, the interior is styled by Cristiano Gatto Design, whose work on this platform favoured light woods and a soft, residential palette. The layout accommodates 12 guests across six cabins. The owner's suite sits forward on the main deck with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the sea from the bed. A full-beam VIP on the lower deck gives a second principal cabin that rivals many owners' quarters elsewhere.

The main saloon opens to the aft deck through wide glass, so the boundary between inside and out softens the moment the doors slide back. Materials were chosen for the way they wear over years of use, not for a single photo shoot. Ceiling heights feel generous for a boat under 500 GT. The atmosphere is calm and bright, the kind of space an owner settles into for years.

A hull that changed the maths

The Fast Displacement Hull Form is the engineering heart of the Series. It blends the seakeeping of a displacement hull with efficiency across low and high speeds, so the yacht is comfortable loafing at 10 knots and willing when pushed. Twin MTU 12V 2000 M61 engines deliver a top speed near 16.3 knots and a range of about 3,750 nautical miles at 12 knots. Those numbers put real cruising grounds within one hop.

For owners who prize quiet, Heesen offers an advanced hybrid propulsion package. In hybrid mode at 10 knots the boat draws roughly 45 litres of fuel an hour, and it can idle through an anchorage on electric drive with the generators asleep. The saving shows up as lower running costs and longer, calmer evenings on board. This was the platform that first proved the idea, and it remains one of the most convincing cases for hybrid at this size.

The owner it suits

The 50 m Aluminium FDHF rewards the owner who wants a private, self-sufficient yacht without stepping into full 500 GT territory. It is fast enough to reposition on a whim and efficient enough to do so without a fuel bill that spoils the mood. A short build slot and a proven platform appeal to buyers who would rather cruise this season than wait three years. It is a first serious yacht for some and a considered downsize for others.

Owners drawn to hybrid running and low-emission credentials find a boat that delivers both without compromise to comfort. The Series has a track record on the water, with Home and Ela showing what the platform becomes in private hands. For a family that values light-filled interiors and easy access to the sea, the case is straightforward. Owners in this bracket buy the boat to cruise it hard.

Three hulls, three different engine rooms

Home, the pioneering hybrid boat, went to owner Harald McPike in 2017 and later featured in Below Deck Mediterranean. Ela followed in 2021 and is currently asking EUR 29.5 million through Fraser. Orion was handed over in June 2025 and was already booked for select charter through Ocean Independence by that summer. All three sit at the same 499 gross tons, but their engine rooms are not identical: Home and Orion run twin MTU 12V 2000 M61 diesels for a quoted 16.3-knot top speed, while Ela carries the more powerful MTU 12V 2000 M72, lifting her to 19.5 knots and a 14.8-knot cruise.

The hybrid mode that made Home's name has held up in practice. Her build captain, Nigel Jenkins, credited it with genuinely lower servicing and fuel costs rather than just quieter running, and a later captain, Mike French, described gliding at around 10 knots on the generators alone with no real usability penalty. That match between the original marketing claim and an operating captain's own account, years apart, is unusual enough to be worth noting on its own.

Сильные стороны и что учесть

Сильные стороны

  • The hybrid claim is backed by named captains who have actually run the boat that way, not just a spec sheetOne captain from the build and one from ongoing operation independently describe the same virtually silent, roughly 10-knot hybrid mode with no real usability penalty, a rare case of the marketing claim and the operator's own account matching.
  • Three hulls in eight years is a real production run, not a one-off demonstratorHome (2017), Ela (2021) and Orion (2025) show the platform has been ordered and delivered repeatedly, with the newest hull already booked for charter through Ocean Independence, evidence the Series keeps finding real buyers rather than sitting as a concept.
  • Sub-500 GT stays true across every delivered hullHome, Ela and Orion are all logged at 499 GT despite variance elsewhere in their engine and range figures, so the regulatory-band promise this Series is built around holds up hull to hull.

На что обратить внимание

  • Engine power and range vary sharply hull to hull under the same model name, with no explanation on recordOrion and the generic spec sheet quote twin MTU 12V 2000 M61 engines for 3,750nm at 12 knots; Ela instead runs more powerful MTU 12V 2000 M72s at 1,448hp each for a claimed 5,960nm at 12 knots on a smaller fuel tank than Home's (43,100 litres versus 45,000 litres); Home itself is quoted at 4,200nm at 12 knots. A buyer comparing hulls needs the exact engine and tank spec confirmed for that specific yacht, not the Series brochure number.
  • Guest and cabin numbers are not even internally consistent for the same hullEla is quoted at both 14 guests and a 12-person sleeping capacity across the same six-cabin layout in spec listings, and Home is separately quoted at 12 guests in 6 cabins with a crew of 10. A buyer should confirm berths in writing rather than trust the headline guest count.
  • No independent sea trial or press road test has been published for any hull in the SeriesEvery performance figure found traces back to Heesen's own material, a brokerage spec sheet, or a captain's operational account, not an independent tester's own measured run. The captain quotes on hybrid mode are genuine first-hand accounts, but they describe comfort, not an independently verified fuel-burn or speed figure.
