The first Featherlight

Project 405 was the proving ground for Featherlight, Royal Huisman's holistic lightweight method. It is not a single trick but a build-wide discipline, Alustar aluminium hybridised with carbon fibre bonded directly to the structure, the entire 16 metre coachroof executed in carbon, and every system interrogated for grams. Continuous weight monitoring through the build confirmed a hull eleven percent lighter than the yard's usual advanced aluminium construction.

Optimisation of systems and equipment cut further weight again, with reports of total savings around fifteen percent, and none of it came from thinner scantlings or reduced quality. Stiffness was preserved by design. For every future Huisman owner the significance is direct, Featherlight is now on the menu, and Nilaya is the sea-trialled evidence that it works.

Racing blood, cruising manners

The owners' brief asked for a yacht that is versatile, comfortable and safe, quick enough in light air to cruise engine-off, and capable of showing up at the regattas that matter with genuine ambition. Reichel/Pugh, the California office behind some of the fastest raceboats ever launched, drew the naval architecture, with Milan's Nauta Design shaping the yacht and her spaces.

The rig is a 62.5 metre Panamax spar, and the detailing runs to racing solutions rarely seen at this size, a blade jib attached with lashings to save a hundred kilograms, and an innovative automated running backstay system to keep manoeuvres crisp with a cruising crew. Light hull, tall rig, low drag, the recipe is a raceboat's, executed with Huisman thoroughness.

A calm interior for long miles

Inside, the collaboration between Nauta and May Vervoordt produced something unusual for a performance yacht, a serene, materially rich home. The owners take a full-beam suite, guests a VIP and two further cabins with flexible configurations, and the crew of eight or so work from four double cabins with a proper mess and engineering station.

The restraint is deliberate. Weight budgets forbid marble excess, so the design leans on texture, natural finishes and daylight, and the result photographs like a considered private house. It is a reminder that lightness and luxury are not opposites when the designers are good enough, they simply require more thought per kilogram.

Delivered sailing

Nilaya left the group's Amsterdam facility in mid 2023 after North Sea trials and headed straight into service, crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean racing and cruising circuit in her first season. A Panamax air draft keeps the canal open to her, which for a world-cruising sailing yacht converts directly into itinerary freedom, both oceans within a fortnight of each other.

Her early seasons have done what the brief demanded, big miles under sail, appearances at the front-rank superyacht regattas, and the quiet endorsement of a fleet that watches new boats closely. Performance cruisers live or die by whether they actually get sailed. Nilaya gets sailed.

Why she matters to the next owner

At 47 metres Nilaya sits in the most usable band of large sailing yachts, big enough for transocean comfort and full crew service, small enough to feel like sailing when the breeze fills in. Add the Featherlight weight advantage and she does more with the length than the fleet around her, faster in light air, earlier onto foils-adjacent performance, engine-off for days at a time.

She is also the template commission. An owner walking into Vollenhove today asking for a fast, beautiful world-cruiser will be shown Nilaya's build file, the weight logs, the carbon-aluminium hybrid drawings, the systems choices. The yacht redefined the yard's own baseline, and every performance Huisman that follows will be measured against her.
