Benetti traces its origin to 1873, when Lorenzo Benetti bought a shipyard in Viareggio and began building trading vessels and fishing boats along the Tuscan coast. His sons carried the yard forward under the name Fratelli Benetti, moving from coastal craft to ocean-going ships in wood. The name reached a wider audience after the war, when the family shifted from timber to steel and put its yachts in front of an international clientele. By 1980 Benetti had become one of the busiest builders of yachts above 24 metres anywhere in the world.
The 1979 delivery of the yacht then named Nabila to Adnan Khashoggi announced what the yard could do at scale, though the contract behind it proved punishing and pushed Benetti into bankruptcy in 1984. Azimut, the fibreglass boatbuilder led by Paolo Vitelli, acquired the assets the following year and gave the historic name the financial footing to grow again. That rescue created the group that still owns the brand today. It also set the pattern of pairing an old builder's craft with modern industrial backing.
Benetti now sits inside Azimut Benetti, the Turin-founded group that ranks among the largest private yacht builders in the world by output. The brand runs a composite line and a steel and aluminium custom line, which lets it cover a wide span from series models in the mid-30-metre range up to full-custom giga yachts above 100 metres. Viareggio remains the historic home of the composite and semi-custom ranges. Livorno, where the group took over the former Orlando naval yard in 2003, handles the largest metal displacement builds.
The Livorno site sits within the Porta a Mare redevelopment, where large covered sheds were built to lay down bigger hulls near the harbour mouth. Fano adds further production capacity within the group's network. This split gives Benetti something few competitors hold, which is the ability to build both a repeatable fibreglass yacht and a bespoke steel giant under one name. Owners moving up in size can stay within a single relationship as their brief grows.
Benetti has spent the past decade formalising its ranges into named families rather than one-off projects. The Class and Diamond lines cover its composite semi-custom yachts. Oasis reframed the beach area as the social heart of the boat, while B.Yond brought hybrid propulsion into the yard's explorer thinking. The Motopanfilo line looked back to the yard's own 1960s heritage for a warmer, more classical register.
The yard works with a recurring circle of external studios alongside its in-house team. Names such as RWD, Giorgio M. Cassetta, Lazzarini and Pickering and the naval architect Pierluigi Ausonio appear across the current fleet, which gives the range coherence without forcing uniformity. That mix of disciplined engineering and strong outside authorship defines where Benetti sits in the market. It aims at owners who want a recognisable pedigree with room to make the yacht their own.
