The hydraulics went overboard

The quietly radical fact about the 120 is what she does not carry. Gulf Craft engineered the hydraulic systems out of the boat entirely, so stabilisers, bow thruster, platforms and doors all run on electric power. Owners inherit none of the hot, high pressure oil plumbing that generates so much superyacht maintenance, and the engine room stays cleaner, cooler and simpler to survey.

Electric equipment also runs quieter, which passengers notice at anchor when the stabilisers are working and nothing hums through the hull. At her 2021 delivery this all-electric approach put the 120 ahead of a market that has since moved the same way, and it remains a genuine differentiator against the similarly sized Italian production she competes with. It also simplifies the crew's life, one energy system to monitor instead of two, and fewer specialist contractors on the winter worklist.

Genuine tri-deck life at 37 metres

The 120 compresses the big-Majesty formula into 37.5 metres and 290 gross tonnes on an 8.4 metre beam. Twelve guests take six cabins, with the owner's suite forward on the main deck in the range's signature position, and up to seven crew work from three cabins of their own, enough hands for silver service without crowding the boat.

Cristiano Gatto Design handled the interior, bringing the same warm modern language the studio gave the flagships. The sky lounge, the foredeck seating and the open sun deck with its spa pool stack three distinct social levels above the waterline, so a full guest list can spread out without anyone hearing anyone else's playlist.

Twenty three knots when it matters

Twin MTU 16V2000 diesels of 2,600 hp each make the 120 one of the quickest boats in her class, 23 knots at full load and an 18 knot fast cruise that turns the Dubai to Doha run or the Naples to Palma leg into a day trip. Composite construction keeps the weight down, which is where that pace comes from on this power.

Slow down and the same hull stretches to 3,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. That is Indian Ocean crossing capability in a 37 metre package, and it matches how these boats actually get used, fast hops between marinas all season, then one long delivery leg to the next cruising ground with the tanks doing the work.

A 2.1 metre draft opens the map

Draft is the underrated number on the spec sheet. At 2.1 metres full load, the 120 floats where 40 metre steel yachts anchor off, over the Bahamian banks, into the Maldivian lagoons, up to the beach clubs of the Gulf. For an owner who bought the boat to reach places, that figure is worth more than another metre of length.

The shallow draft pairs with a hull that behaves in a seaway, semi-displacement manners with the reserve buoyancy to shrug off a Gulf chop or a Mediterranean mistral afternoon. It is a combination drawn deliberately for the two regions where most 120s live, and it explains why the model travelled so well when it reached the European market.

Cannes proved the point

Gulf Craft sent the 120 to the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2022 for her European premiere, parking her directly among the Italian competition on their home water. The reception mattered more than the show itself, European buyers walked a UAE-built 37 metre and found finish, volume and a specification the local yards charge substantially more to match.

Since then the 120 has settled into the role the 140 pioneered, the accessible end of genuine superyacht ownership from a top ten builder. She gives a first-time superyacht owner six cabins, a crew of seven and tri-deck presence with running costs moderated by composite weight and electric systems, and she holds her value in a class where provenance increasingly counts. For many owners she is the last boat before the jump to forty metres, and for a good number she has proved reason enough not to make it.
