Ducati Enters Boating With a 26-Unit Pirelli 44 Edition

Ducati built its first boat to mark its 100th year, a Pirelli 44 dressed in Superleggera V4 Centenario livery and capped at 26 units worldwide. An owner with both a Ducati and a tender problem now has a single, very small waiting list to join, with no price yet attached to it.

Why is a motorcycle company building a boat, and who actually built it?

Ducati did not license its badge to a boatbuilder it does not know. The Pirelli 44 | Ducati Edition was developed with Pirelli, which has fitted every Ducati motorcycle since the marque began, and SACS Marine, the Italian yard that has built the Pirelli Speedboats range for more than twenty years.

The boat had its world premiere on the evening of Thursday 10 September at Zuma Cannes, during the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival, Europe's largest in-water boat show. Ducati's CEO Claudio Domenicali and SACS Marine's Chief Growth Officer Nicola Antonelli attended in person, alongside Pirelli's SVP of Design and Assets Conversion, Marco Maria Tronchetti Provera. Only a scale model was shown on a plinth; no full-size hull existed at the unveiling.

The three companies frame it as a continuation of an existing relationship rather than a one-off badge deal. Pirelli has supplied factory tyres for every motorcycle to leave Ducati's Borgo Panigale plant, and its Pirelli Speedboats division has worked with SACS Marine since the early 2000s on the maxi-RIB range this edition is built from. Domenicali said the project came from finding 'a natural alignment in the way we interpret design, innovation and, above all, the pursuit of maximum performance' between the three firms, rather than from a licensing pitch. Ducati's own centenary programme already runs to collaborations with Bulgari, Lego Technic, Carrera Eyewear, Piquadro, Macron, Supreme and a commemorative coin, listed together on the manufacturer's own site as its 2026 collab roster. A seagoing boat is the only entry on that list that is not wearable, buildable on a desk or spendable, which is itself a sign of how far Ducati was willing to stretch the centenary brief.

What actually makes this a different boat from the standard Pirelli 44, beyond the paint?

The Ducati Edition carries three 500hp Mercury Racing engines for 1,500hp combined, a configuration Ducati and SACS Marine say is reserved exclusively for this project. That is a mechanical change, not a styling package on top of an unchanged hull.

Yotters reported the standard Pirelli 44 in its triple-Mercury-Verado, 1,275hp configuration on 8 September, two days before this edition's premiere. Swapping in Mercury's Racing line rather than its Verado outboards is the kind of change a buyer notices at the throttle, not on a spec sheet: Mercury markets Racing-badged outboards on total output and race-proven internals ahead of the creature comforts Verado buyers usually want. Ducati has not published a top speed or acceleration figure for the Ducati Edition, and none is likely until a running hull exists to time. The hull itself carries over the standard 44's dimensions, 13.10 metres overall on a 4.30-metre beam, with a 950-litre fuel tank that will need to work harder against three racing engines than it does against the standard triple-Verado setup.

The hull underneath the engines is unchanged: a double-step design from the Mannerfelt Design Team, the Swedish naval architecture house that shaped the standard 44's seakeeping and is credited on both boats. Aerodynamic winglets on the engine cowlings, borrowed visually from the tail fairings on Ducati's MotoGP bike, are new to this edition and are claimed to aid stability at speed rather than serve a purely decorative role, though neither company has published wind-tunnel or towing-tank data to support that claim. The 500hp figure is not a detuned number picked to fit a triple installation: Mercury Racing's 500R, a supercharged 4.6-litre V8, is that line's current flagship single outboard, so three of them is close to the most output the R-series can put on one transom today rather than a compromise between power and count.

Is the Ducati branding just a paint job, or did Ducati's design studio actually do the work?

Ducati's Centro Stile styling team worked directly on the boat, and the tube's tread pattern was hand-carved by Pirelli's own R&D centre rather than pulled from a parts catalogue. Both are the kind of detail a licensing deal usually skips.

The livery is drawn from the Superleggera V4 Centenario, Ducati's most extreme road-legal motorcycle, itself built to mark the centenary. The tube tread, normally modelled on Pirelli's Cinturato Blue wet-weather tyre, was instead sculpted by hand at Pirelli's R&D centre to reference the Diablo Supercorsa SP, the specific road tyre fitted to the Centenario motorcycle. Pirelli's Tronchetti Provera called the boat 'a new chapter in the journey we have embarked on with SACS Marine', not a fresh licence.

Cabin details carry the same intent: a carbon-fibre hardtop, black-finished steel hardware, Alcantara on the helm and passenger seats, a commemorative plaque naming the hull number, and a customisable number plate, a feature Ducati normally reserves for its most exclusive motorcycle editions rather than a mainstream model. SACS Marine's Antonelli said the brief was to build something that could 'evoke a sense of excitement even before the engines are started', which is a design goal more common to a limited motorcycle run than a tender. Press photography from the Cannes unveiling shows the model displayed alongside a full-size Pirelli P Zero tyre carrying the same red-and-white graphic language, a detail that ties the boat back to Pirelli's road business rather than treating the tyre maker as a name-only partner in the deal.

What does the Pirelli 44 Ducati Edition cost, and when can an owner actually take delivery?

Neither company has published a price for the Ducati Edition, and none exists yet for the standard Pirelli 44 either, so there is no public figure to compare the premium against. No delivery date or ordering process has been announced.

That gap matters more than it would on a larger, slower-moving launch. A 111-metre superyacht typically sells against a build slot measured in years and a price quietly known within the brokerage community well before a press release. A 26-unit run tied to a single anniversary date has no such lead time, and Ducati's own language, that the project 'marks the beginning of a journey destined to continue well beyond its debut', suggests the company itself has not finished deciding how the 26 units will reach buyers. The venue underlines the point: Zuma Cannes, a restaurant and events space rather than a boat-show stand, hosted a press conference during the Cannes Yachting Festival's 8 to 13 September run rather than a sales desk, which is consistent with a company still building interest before it builds boats.

What is publicly confirmed: the number is fixed at 26, tied to Ducati's 1926 founding rather than to demand, and the boat shown in Cannes was a scale model rather than a sea-trialled hull. An owner used to a yard's usual order-then-build sequence should expect this one to run in the opposite direction, announcement first and commercial terms later, which is common for a marque collaboration but unusual for a boat carrying a genuine mechanical change in its engines.

What is good, and what to watch

Strong points

  • A real engineering partnership, not a badge licencePirelli has fitted every Ducati motorcycle since the marque's founding and has built the Speedboats range with SACS Marine for over twenty years, so the collaboration has actual technical history behind it.
  • A genuine mechanical step upThree 500hp Mercury Racing engines, a configuration reserved for this project alone, is a real change from the standard 44's Verado outboards, not a colour option.
  • Extreme, verifiable rarity26 units worldwide, tied to a specific historical date, is a smaller run than most yacht-brand tender collaborations.
  • Design credentials that hold upThe hull comes from the Mannerfelt Design Team, an established naval architecture house, and the tread pattern was hand-carved by Pirelli's own R&D centre rather than adapted from stock.

What to watch

  • No price for either boatNothing has been published for the Ducati Edition or the standard Pirelli 44, so a buyer cannot yet weigh the premium against the rarity.
  • Nothing has actually been builtOnly a scale model existed at the 10 September unveiling; no performance, seakeeping or comfort claim has been demonstrated on the water.
  • No delivery timeline or order processDucati describes the launch as the start of a longer campaign rather than a finished commercial offer, which leaves a genuinely interested buyer with nothing concrete to act on yet.
  • Allocation, not sale on demand, is likelyA run of 26 against Ducati and Pirelli's combined global retail reach will almost certainly be allocated to existing clients rather than opened to a waiting list.
