BG72

The Bluegame BG72 is a 22.82 metre open crossover motor yacht that Sanlorenzo's Bluegame division launched at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival, built to close the gap between the brand's open BG range and its enclosed BGX flybridge line. Lou Codega drew the hull, Luca Santella and Zuccon International Project handled the styling and interiors, and the standout feature is a hydraulically adjustable aft platform extending almost two metres from the hull to work as a swim deck, tender garage or lounging space. Twin Volvo Penta IPS pod drives give her a genuine 28 to 31 knot turn of speed. Bluegame built only a short run of BG72s between 2021 and 2023 before the model was superseded by the newer BG74.

The Missing Link Between Bluegame's Open and Flybridge Ranges

Bluegame unveiled the BG72 at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival as the flagship of its BG range, pitching her as the missing link between two existing product lines. The open BG range built the brand's name on low, uncluttered profiles and a foredeck lounge instead of a flybridge, while the enclosed BGX range offered the extra shelter and volume of a proper upper deck. Bluegame's own account of the BG72 is that she borrows the aft platform and lower-deck saloon layout first proven on the BGX70 and adds a fully open upper deck on top, so an owner gets flybridge-style living space without losing the open, sporty deck plan the BG name is built on. Lou Codega drew the underlying hull, a planing form aimed at speed with a comfortable ride rather than outright racing performance (Boat International; Yachting Magazine).

The exterior lines and interior design are credited to Luca Santella, Bluegame's founder and a former Olympic sailor, working with long-time design partner Zuccon International Project, the same studio Sanlorenzo uses across several of its own SD, SX and Steel ranges. Sanlorenzo bought Bluegame in 2018 and has run it since as a smaller, sportier counterpart to its own flybridge yachts, and the BG72 was one of the clearest results of that ownership: a boat built to compete directly with flybridge designs from other yards while keeping Bluegame's open, uncluttered identity. After Cannes the BG72 went on to the Genoa International Boat Show and the Monaco Yacht Show, where trade press repeatedly noted she was among the smallest yachts on display at an event otherwise dominated by full superyachts (Boat International; Yacht Harbour).

Twin Volvo Penta IPS Pods and What They Deliver at Sea

Bluegame offers the BG72 with a choice of two Volvo Penta D13 diesel packages, both driving IPS pod-and-propeller units rather than conventional shafts. The standard fit is twin IPS1200 pods rated at 900 hp (662 kW) each, and the step-up option is twin IPS1350 pods at 1,000 hp (735 kW) each; both figures are confirmed consistently across itBoat's technical listing and Yachting Magazine's launch coverage. Builder figures put the standard package at a 28 knot top speed and 25 knot cruise, rising to 30 knots top and 27 knots cruise on the optional engines, and Bluegame says every one of the roughly ten hulls sold with the bigger engines also left the yard with a Seakeeper gyroscopic stabilizer fitted (Yachting Magazine). The IPS system also brings joystick docking as standard, a real convenience on a 40 tonne yacht aimed at an owner-operator rather than a full crew.

Motor Boat and Yachting ran a sea trial on a range-topping IPS1350 example and recorded a top speed of 31.1 knots, a tested cruise of 20 knots burning 182 litres an hour, and a resulting range of about 351 nautical miles at that pace. Separately, Yachts Croatia and Barche a Motore both logged an economical cruise of around 14 knots at 111 litres an hour and a faster cruise near 25 knots at roughly 316 litres an hour, figures that line up with Bluegame's own claim of over 1,000 nautical miles of range at 10 knots. Reviewers were consistent on handling too: Yachts Croatia noted the BG72's raised bow shed waves cleanly at speed with no more than about 10 degrees of heel in hard turns, credited to the Codega hull working with the standard gyro stabilizer.

Bluegame pitched the BG72 as the missing link between its open and flybridge ranges, and founder Luca Santella summed up the brief in three words to Yachting Magazine: "space is gold."

A Transforming Aft Platform and Three Cabins Below

The BG72's signature feature sits at the stern: a hydraulically powered platform that Motor Boat and Yachting measured as extending the usable deck by roughly ten feet, moving out, up and down under power to switch between a raised passerelle, a lowered swim step or an extended lounging area, with a rated lift capacity of 500 kg for tenders or water toys. Bluegame and its reviewers repeatedly describe the effect as closer to a workboat's stern than a conventional yacht's, deliberately so, since the point of the design is flexible, uncluttered deck space rather than fixed furniture. An optional crane lets an owner add a jet ski, canoe or paddleboards to the aft deck, and twin stairs lead up from the main deck to a hardtop sun deck with its own lounging pads (Motor Boat and Yachting; Yachts Croatia; Barche a Motore).

Below decks, Bluegame sells the BG72 with three en suite cabins sleeping six guests, in a choice of two layouts: one keeps a full-beam owner's cabin aft with his-and-hers sinks and a forward-facing bed, and the other moves the owner's cabin forward and gives the aft space over to an extra full-beam saloon and lounge instead, a swap several reviewers noted trades a cabin's worth of space for entertaining room (itBoat; Yachting Magazine). Two further guest cabins with double beds and their own en suite heads sit forward of the engine room in both layouts. A compact crew cabin reached through a foredeck hatch confirms the boat's owner-operator brief, since it is sized for at most one crew member rather than a full professional team (BoatTest).

A Short, Well-Reviewed Production Run, Now Discontinued

Trade press coverage of the BG72 was consistently positive on the specific things it set out to do: an open-plan deck with genuine flybridge-level volume, a transforming aft platform that reviewers called genuinely novel rather than a marketing flourish and a hull that several test pilots described as surprisingly composed at speed for a boat this open. Motor Boat and Yachting, Yachts Croatia, Barche a Motore, Yachting Magazine and itBoat all covered the model without raising a significant handling or build-quality complaint, which is itself worth noting plainly rather than dressing up as universal acclaim: the absence of criticism in the sources checked for this entry reflects what was published, not a guarantee that none exists.

What is clear from production records is that the BG72's run was short. itBoat and multiple brokerage listings date production to 2021 through 2023, and Bluegame's current model range, as sold today, runs the open BG line through the BG54, BG64 and the newer BG74 rather than the BG72, meaning the model has been superseded in the lineup by a similarly sized successor. That leaves the BG72 as a distinct, closed chapter: a well-reviewed flagship built in limited numbers rather than an ongoing model line, which matters to a buyer weighing parts support, resale liquidity and how much dealer attention a used example will get compared with a currently produced Bluegame.

Price, Resale and What a Buyer Should Check

New-build pricing for the BG72 is not consistent across the sources available, and this entry reports that honestly rather than picking one figure. Motor Boat and Yachting's test article quotes a base price of EUR 3.13 million ex VAT, with its specific test boat, loaded with options including the bigger engines and gyro stabilizer, priced at EUR 3.8 million ex VAT. Separately, Yachting Magazine's own launch coverage quotes a starting price of EUR 3.5 million, a figure autoevolution's coverage of the same launch also cites in dollar terms. The likeliest explanation is that the two figures were taken at different points across the 2021 to 2023 production run, since list prices commonly rose over that period, but neither this entry nor its sources can confirm that, so a buyer should treat both as historical reference points rather than a current quote.

On the used market, brokerage listings for 2021 to 2023 hulls found while researching this entry, including Northrop and Johnson, ITA Yachts Canada and Rightboat, cluster in the USD 4.0 to 4.2 million range, ahead of both quoted new prices, which is typical for a short-run model with limited supply rather than a sign of unusual demand. Running costs are dominated by fuel: Yachts Croatia's own figures of 316 litres an hour at a 25 knot cruise mean a full 4,000 litre tank does not stretch far at speed, so an owner planning long fast passages should budget accordingly. What remains unpublished across every source checked is the generator make and model, the exact total number of BG72 hulls built and any independent long-term reliability record beyond the launch-era sea trials cited here (itBoat; Motor Boat and Yachting; Yachting Magazine).

Main enginesTwin Volvo Penta D13 diesels: standard IPS1200 pod drives at 900 hp (662 kW) each, or optional IPS1350 pod drives at 1,000 hp (735 kW) each (itBoat; Yachting Magazine).
DriveVolvo Penta IPS pod-and-propeller units rather than conventional shaft drive, standard across the package (itBoat; BoatTest).
GeneratorNot published in any source found for the BG72 specifically.
StabilizerSeakeeper gyroscopic stabilizer fitted as standard on the roughly ten hulls sold with the optional 1,000 hp engines (Yachting Magazine); described as standard equipment more generally by Yachts Croatia and Barche a Motore.
Bow/stern thruster and dockingVolvo Penta IPS joystick docking control is standard with the pod-drive package; no separate bow or stern thruster specification has been published for the BG72 (itBoat; Barche a Motore).
Fuel tankage4,000 litres (itBoat; Motor Boat and Yachting; Yachts Croatia; Barche a Motore).
Fresh water tankage1,000 litres (same sources as fuel tankage).
What to check on a used BG72IPS pod and drive-unit hours and service history, since the pods rather than a separate gearbox are the main wear item on this drivetrain; also confirm which engine option and whether the Seakeeper gyro was fitted, since both vary hull to hull across the short production run.

Lo que cuentan armadores y tripulaciones

Lo bueno y lo que conviene vigilar

Puntos fuertes

  • A genuinely novel aft platform, not a styling gimmickThe hydraulic aft platform extends roughly ten feet and moves out, up and down to switch between passerelle, swim step and lounging use with a 500 kg lift capacity, a mechanism multiple independent reviewers tested and described as unusual and effective rather than simply repeating a press release.
  • Real speed with docking ease from the IPS packageA tested 31.1 knot top speed on the optional engines, plus Volvo Penta IPS joystick docking as standard, gives an owner-operator both genuine performance and the low-stress handling that pod drives are chosen for at this size.
  • A flexible two-layout, three-cabin plan built around how the boat is actually usedChoosing between an aft owner's cabin or a forward one that frees the stern for an extra saloon is a real, checkable design decision rather than marketing language, and it lets an owner trade cabin space for entertaining space depending on how they cruise.

A tener en cuenta

  • New-build price cannot be pinned to one confirmed figureMotor Boat and Yachting quotes a EUR 3.13 million base price while Yachting Magazine and autoevolution quote EUR 3.5 million for the same model; this entry reports both rather than inventing certainty, but a buyer researching historical value will not find a single agreed number.
  • Fuel burn at a fast cruise limits real range for the tankageAt the 25 knot cruise several reviewers tested, consumption of roughly 316 litres an hour against a 4,000 litre tank gives well under half a day's running at that pace, modest range for a 22 metre yacht compared with tankage on similarly sized flybridge rivals.
  • A short, now-closed production run thins out support and comparablesBuilt only from 2021 to 2023 and since superseded in Bluegame's own lineup by the BG74, the BG72 has fewer hulls, fewer resale comparables and less long-term reliability data behind it than a model still in production.

Información práctica

New priceNo longer sold new. While in production, sources quoted a base price of either EUR 3.13 million ex VAT (Motor Boat and Yachting, as tested EUR 3.8 million) or EUR 3.5 million (Yachting Magazine; autoevolution); the two figures do not reconcile and likely reflect different points in the 2021 to 2023 production run.
Used/resaleBrokerage listings found for 2021 to 2023 hulls, including Northrop and Johnson, ITA Yachts Canada and Rightboat, cluster around USD 4.0 to 4.2 million.
Running costsFuel-dominated: about 111 litres an hour at a 14 knot economical cruise rising to roughly 316 litres an hour at a 25 knot cruise (Yachts Croatia; Barche a Motore), against a 4,000 litre tank.
What is not publishedGenerator make and model, the exact total number of BG72 hulls built and any independent long-term ownership or reliability report beyond the 2021 to 2023 launch-era sea trials.

Para quién es: An owner-operator drawn to Bluegame's open, sports-utility format who wants flybridge-level living space and a genuinely novel transforming aft platform, and who is comfortable buying a short-production-run model that Bluegame has since replaced with the BG74.
