FD80

The FD80 compresses the FD formula into a boat a committed couple can genuinely run, a 24.56 meter fast displacement design with an on-deck master, floor-to-ceiling glass and a beach club, in production since 2019. Horizon pitches it at owner-operators who want megayacht amenities without megayacht crew, and the delivered hulls suggest the pitch lands.

Megayacht ideas at 80 feet

The FD80's trick is refusing to scale down the features that matter. The master stateroom stays on the main deck, a location most 80 footers reserve for the salon, and floor-to-ceiling glass sections run through the salon and dining areas so the interior lives like a shoreside apartment with a changing view. Horizon's brief for the boat promises megayacht amenities for owner-operators, and the layout decisions read like a checklist written by someone who has actually run a boat shorthanded.

Aft, a beach club with natural light brings the waterline lifestyle of the big FDs to a boat that fits ordinary marina berths, and the bridge deck aft carries a 16 foot tender. The High Performance Piercing Bow pushes usable volume forward, which is how a 24.56 metre hull absorbs all of this without feeling dense.

The numbers

Length overall is 24.56 metres on a 21.58 metre waterline, with a 6.87 metre beam and a 1.72 metre draft. The engine package is the first thing to pin down on any particular hull, because it has moved three times: Caterpillar C13s of 1,130 hp on the earliest boats, C18s of 1,136 hp with an 1,800 hp C32 option through 2024, and twin Caterpillar C32A or MTU 10V2000 of 1,600 hp each on current hulls. Two generators sit alongside them, and their make and rating changed with the same generations.

Fuel capacity is 10,220 litres, about 2,700 US gallons, with 1,500 litres of fresh water. The fast displacement hull holds its efficiency at unhurried passage speeds while keeping real pace available, and the shallow draft opens the same skinny Bahamian water the rest of the series trades on. Displacement has climbed with the generations, from about 79 tons on the early MAN V8 boats to about 92 on current hulls, and at that weight the FD80 sits heavy for its length, a deliberate choice that pays off in motion comfort and in how the boat carries its glass and stone without feeling delicate.

Built to be run by its owner

Horizon designed the FD80 explicitly for owner-operators, and the practical evidence is everywhere: side wingstations that give clear sightlines for short-handed docking, systems consolidated for simple daily checks, and circulation that lets one person move from helm to side decks to cleats without gymnastics. Docking is the moment that decides whether an owner-operator boat actually gets used, and the wingstations put the person on the throttles exactly where the fenders meet the dock.

The helm choice follows suit. Owners specify a Skyline enclosed bridge for all-weather passagemaking or Horizon's Split Use Skylounge, which divides the upper level between covered helm and open lounging. Either way the boat can be handled by a couple with a single deckhand, though the accommodation plan sets aside rather more than that: two crew cabins aft of the engine room, three to four berths depending on layout, with their own galley, head and laundry.

Four staterooms where it counts

Below decks the FD80 carries three guest cabins to go with the main-deck master, giving four staterooms on a hull where three is the norm. Guests get proper beds and en-suite bathrooms, and the owner keeps the deck-level suite with its glass and horizon views to themselves.

The crew arrangement works at either end of that range. Many FD80s run owner-operated with occasional professional help, while the two cabins aft, reached by an internal stair from the saloon and opening onto the beach club, carry a full-time pair when an owner wants one. Families that outgrow the format have a ready ladder waiting in the FD90 and FD97 above it, so nothing learned aboard the FD80 is wasted.

Proof in the deliveries

The model has been in production since 2019 and the yard's news feed marks the cadence, including the delivery of the customized FD80 Amphib, one of a string of hulls specified to individual owners' briefs. Amphib's owners shaped their boat around a personal cruising program and the yard delivered it as routine series business, which is the entire semi-custom promise in a single anecdote. Each delivery adds to the sistership fleet that gives the FD80 its brokerage credibility.

For a buyer stepping up from a 60 or 70 foot flybridge boat, the FD80 is the point where the yacht acquires superyacht architecture, the on-deck master, the beach club, the glass, while the running of it stays within family scale. That is a narrow target, and this hull hits it more squarely than almost anything else at the length.

Двигатели и системы

Engines, 2019 to 2021
Twin Caterpillar C13 of 1,130 hp were standard. Yachting tested the optional twin MAN V8-1200 of 1,200 hp and recorded 20 knots maximum.
Engines, 2022 to 2024
Twin Caterpillar C18 of 1,136 hp standard, twin Caterpillar C32 V12 of 1,800 hp optional. boatsales recorded 25 knots at wide open throttle on the C32 pair.
Engines, current hulls
Twin Caterpillar C32A or twin MTU 10V2000, 1,600 hp each, for a quoted 22 knots maximum and 18 knots fast cruise.
Gearboxes
Trailing gearboxes, so the yacht holds up to 10 knots on one engine with the other shaft free to turn. On a long passage that converts a failed main from an emergency into a slow day.
Generators
Two, and the make has moved with the generation: twin 29 kW Cummins Onan on the 2020 test boat, twin 27 kW Onan on the 2022 Skyline, Kohler on current hulls. Confirm the pair fitted to the individual yacht rather than trusting the brochure.
Stabilisers
Side-Power fins, specified to zero speed, so the boat is steady at the lunch stop and not only underway.
Thrusters
Bow and stern, 53 hp, as quoted on the 2022 Skyline.
Watermaker
Dometic. The 2022 Skyline carried a 280 litre an hour unit; larger 1,800 gallon a day XTC II units appear on other hulls.
Fuel and water
10,220 litres of fuel and 1,500 litres of fresh water as standard. Specifying the smaller V8 package frees engine-room space for an optional tank of about 15,000 litres, which is the configuration to look for if range is the point.
Engine room
2.29 m of headroom with a white gelcoat sole, so a leak shows the moment it starts, and handholds throughout.
Tender handling
Steelhead ES Series 1500 davit on the bridge deck, rated for a 16 ft tender.
