Nord

Nord is a 141.6-metre expedition-styled Lurssen delivered in 2021, one of the largest yachts the yard has ever completed. She pairs an ice-strengthened hull with the interior volume of a small cruise ship, and she was designed inside and out by the Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard. In recent years she has become as well known for her sanctions saga as for her engineering.

A ship built to go anywhere

Nord matters because she represents a particular Lurssen ambition, a yacht that can cross oceans and reach high latitudes without compromise. At 141.6 metres and 10,154 GT she is among the ten largest yachts in the world, and her ice-strengthened hull was conceived for cold and remote waters that most vessels of this class never see. The design leans toward the expedition look that has grown popular among the largest yachts, with a purposeful profile rather than a purely decorative one. She is a serious ocean ship dressed as a private yacht.

Delivered in 2021 after a build known as Project Opus, she arrived at a moment when owners increasingly wanted range and autonomy over pure glamour. Nord answered that brief at a scale few builders could match. Her sheer size gives her the endurance and sea-keeping of a small commercial vessel. That combination of reach and volume is what places her in the top tier of the modern fleet.

The expedition line

The exterior came from Nuvolari Lenard, the Venetian studio responsible for many of the yard's most recognisable yachts. On Nord the designers worked with a tall, upright profile spread over six decks, giving the vessel presence without resorting to novelty. Two helicopter landing areas sit within the design, a feature that signals both her scale and her intended use in places where a helicopter is the only practical link to shore. The styling is muscular and deliberately understated.

Below the waterline the story is about strength. The hull is steel with an aluminium superstructure and teak decks, built to withstand ice and heavy weather. Multiple swimming pools and generous open deck areas break up the mass and give guests room to spread out across the ship. The result reads less like a floating villa and more like a private ship with the endurance to match its looks.

A private ship dressed as a yacht, built to reach the ends of the earth.

Volume on a commercial scale

Nord is powered by four MTU diesel engines driving her to a top speed of around twenty knots, respectable for a hull of this displacement. Her real advantage is endurance rather than pace, with the fuel capacity and systems redundancy expected of a vessel that may operate far from support. The engineering package reflects Lurssen's core competence, quiet running and reliability over long passages. Everything about the machinery is sized for autonomy.

Inside, the accommodation is arranged for very large parties, with capacity reported at up to thirty-six guests across twenty-one staterooms and a crew of around forty-two. Those numbers put Nord closer to a private cruise ship than a conventional yacht. The interior volume allows for full-height spaces and amenities that smaller yachts cannot house. It is a vessel designed to carry an extended family and its entourage for weeks at a time.

Life aboard a floating estate

With more than ten thousand GT of internal volume, Nord offers the kind of space that changes what a yacht can be. Guests can move between multiple pools, expansive sun decks and interior lounges without ever feeling the ship is full. The scale allows for dedicated areas that would be impossible on a smaller vessel, from large formal rooms to private owner's decks. The experience is closer to a private resort than a boat.

The two helipads extend that experience beyond the ship itself, opening up shore excursions in places without marinas or airports. Her ice-strengthened build means the same guests could be in the tropics one season and near the poles the next. Very few yachts can credibly offer that range. For an owner who wants the world within reach, Nord was built to deliver it.

The sanctions shadow

Nord has been widely reported in the international press as belonging to a Russian industrialist. That reporting should be read as reported rather than officially confirmed, as with most Lurssen owners. After Western sanctions followed the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the yacht drew intense attention for her movements between ports in Russia and Asia. Her name appeared in coverage far beyond the yachting world.

That reputational exposure became literal in April 2022, when Nord ran roughly 6,700 nautical miles from the Seychelles to Vladivostok at full speed, reportedly on about $465,000 of fuel and with her AIS tracking switched off, to reach Russian waters ahead of a feared Western seizure. Three years later, in 2025, Russia's Northern Sea Route Administration granted her a rare permit to cruise the Chukchi Sea and Wrangel Island, waters normally closed to private vessels. Nord's engineering and pedigree are not in question. Her recent history is a reminder that the largest yachts carry reputational weight as well as commercial value.

Сильные стороны и что учесть

Сильные стороны

  • Genuine ice-class engineeringAn ice-strengthened hull and true long-range redundancy, rare at this size - a working expedition ship rather than an expedition-styled one
  • An exceptional toy inventoryA Triton submersible, a Griffon hovercraft, an Iguana amphibious craft and a dedicated vehicle garage are equipment most 140-metre-plus yachts simply don't carry
  • Real operational flexibilityTwo helicopter decks, one with a retracting hangar, let her support helicopter operations far from any shore infrastructure

На что обратить внимание

  • Scale over intimacyAt 10,154 GT over six decks she reads closer to a small cruise ship than an intimate private yacht
  • A very small pool of possible ownersEstimated running costs of $40-50 million a year rule out all but a handful of owners worldwide
  • Ownership opacityThe same secrecy that let her reach Vladivostok undetected in 2022 also means her true ownership is reported rather than independently verifiable
