Flagship of the crossover

When Sanlorenzo launched the SX range, it named a category that barely existed, a boat that borrowed the low, usable volumes of an expedition vessel and married them to the finish of a luxury motor yacht. The SX120 is the flagship of that family. At 36.58 metres it is the biggest SX to date, and it carries the concept with more space and more reach than its smaller sisters. The exterior is by Zuccon International Project, with interiors by Piero Lissoni.

The significance is commercial as well as stylistic. The crossover format has drawn owners who might otherwise have looked at an explorer yacht or a large open sportboat, and the SX120 gives them a top-of-the-range option without leaving the type. It has let Sanlorenzo hold those buyers inside its own catalogue.

What crossover means

The crossover idea is easiest to understand by what it removes. A traditional flybridge yacht separates its decks by function and hides the crew and tender spaces away. The SX layout opens those areas up, so a single main deck can serve as a beach house at anchor with the tender garage and side terraces feeding into it. The result is far more social square footage than the length alone would imply.

On the SX120 that thinking scales up. The main deck can be configured with the galley and living spaces arranged for open-plan use, and the connection to the sea at the stern is central to the design. Volume and light

With around 270 GT on a 36-metre hull, the SX120 offers volume normally associated with larger yachts. It sleeps up to ten guests and carries a crew of six. The full-beam owner's accommodation and the generous glazing follow Lissoni's restrained, residential style, where the materials are quiet and the views do the work. Deck spaces are large and unusually connected for a yacht of this length.

The emphasis throughout is on livability rather than a long list of separate rooms. Terraces fold down to widen the main deck, and the beach area at sea level turns the stern into a gathering place. It is a boat designed to be lived on at anchor for long stretches, with the interior and exterior treated as one continuous space.

Efficient propulsion

The SX120 is driven by four Volvo Penta D13 engines in an IPS pod configuration, a choice that keeps the machinery compact and frees up interior volume. Pod drives also improve manoeuvrability and lower noise at the helm. The reported top speed is around 23 knots, which places the SX120 as a comfortable cruiser rather than a sprinter. That matches the character of the type.

An Eco Mode manages the power automatically for efficiency, and Sanlorenzo reports a range of up to 2,000 nautical miles in that setting. The long legs suit owners who want to cruise beyond a single coastline without the demands of a full displacement superyacht. It is a practical package built around real cruising rather than headline speed.

Who the SX120 suits

The SX120 appeals to the owner who wants the space and reach of a larger yacht but prefers the informal, open feeling of the crossover format. It suits long stays at anchor and family cruising, with room aboard for guests and crew. As the flagship of the range it also carries a certain status inside the Sanlorenzo world. It answers buyers who found conventional flybridge yachts too formal for how they actually use a boat.

In the wider market it competes with explorer yachts and large open motor yachts, and its case rests on interior volume and an open, flexible layout wrapped in Italian finish.
