Hydro Tec

Sergio Cutolo founded Hydro Tec in Ovada, Italy in 1995 with his wife Silvia Himsolt, after close to a decade running Baglietto's technical department, and for its first years the studio was purely an engineering house before adding design in the early 2000s. The clearest proof of what that engineering-first pedigree bought is Cantiere delle Marche: every hull in the yard's Darwin Class and Flexplorer ranges since its 2010 founding carries Hydro Tec's naval architecture and exterior, a partnership that won the 2025 World Superyacht Award with the 44.33 metre Maverick. The clearest limit on it is the same fact read the other way: the flagship reputation runs almost entirely through one yard, no fee scale is published anywhere, and this research found no sourced link at all to Mangusta, a brand press coverage keeps placing next to Hydro Tec's name without ever actually crediting it to Cutolo's office.

FoundersSergio Cutolo, Naples-born naval architect and marine engineer, previously close to ten years as Technical Director at Baglietto, and Silvia Himsolt, his wife and co-founder, born in Bavaria; studio founded in Ovada, Italy in 1995, initially engineering only, adding design in the early 2000s
Cantiere delle Marche (founded 2010 by Vasco Buonpensiere and Ennio Cecchini): Hydro Tec has drawn the entire Darwin Class (86, 102, 115 ft, first hull Vitadimare 3, 2011) and the Flexplorer line (130-146 ft, introduced 2022); Buonpensiere credits Cutolo with making the yard a viable business from its first hull
Maverick (Lt. Pete Maverick Mitchell), 44.33m Flexplorer 146, Cantiere delle Marche, delivered 2024: won the 2025 World Superyacht Award, Displacement Motor Yachts 40-45.9m, and a Robb Report Best of the Best award for Best Explorer
No sourced design relationship found to Mangusta or Overmarine Group despite frequent press-coverage proximity; Overmarine was founded 1985 by the Balducci family and separately bought Baglietto (Cutolo's former employer) in 2010; the current Mangusta range is credited to designer Alberto Mancini, previously Stefano Righini
Naumachos, 82ft explorer for Cantieri di Pesaro in the mid-2000s, generally credited as Hydro Tec's first fully in-house design and the origin of its pocket-explorer approach
Emocean, 37.83m, Rosetti Superyachts, launched 2021: full Hydro Tec naval architecture, hull and exterior package; Rosetti sales and marketing director Andrea Giora credits Cutolo with bringing the yard its first superyacht client; won a 2022 World Superyacht Award
Other yards worked withColumbus Yachts (Crossover, Classic, Sport Hybrid), Mondomarine, Vittoria Yachts (Bow Sprit concept), Antonini Navi (Seamore34, due 2026)
Portfolio and staff counts disputed across sources: 161 yachts delivered by the studio's own current count versus 150+ in independent trade profiles versus 200+ in one 2024 estimate counting in-build hulls; staff reported at 20+ by one profile and around 30 with satellite units by a 2024 interview
No published design fee scale; general trade estimates for a full naval-architecture-and-design package range from roughly 10-20 percent of build cost (more where heavily customised) to 3-5 percent cited separately for a 60m yacht, a spread wide enough that no single figure applies to Hydro Tec specifically

An Engineering Company That Learned To Design

Cutolo trained in naval architecture and marine engineering and built his career inside shipyards rather than a design office: the studio's own account of his history names spells at Cetena, Fincantieri's research arm, and at the Rodriguez shipyard before Baglietto, where he rose to Technical Director over close to a decade and worked on projects including the 35 metre aluminum Adler, launched in 1987. He left to found Hydro Tec in 1995, a fact confirmed independently in a 2018 Barche Magazine interview in which Cutolo describes working as Baglietto's technical manager until that year. For its first several years the new studio took no design commissions at all, supplying only the engineering, hydrodynamics and structural work that yards and other designers needed to actually build a boat.

Silvia Himsolt, born in Bavaria, met Cutolo while windsurfing on the Sorrento peninsula, according to the studio's own account, and joined the business from a scientific background, she had worked as a field advisor for an American foundation researching oncological therapies, taking charge of everything outside the technical side. The pivot from pure engineering to a full design package came in the early 2000s and made Hydro Tec, by its own description and independent trade profiles alike, one of only a handful of studios anywhere offering naval architecture, structural engineering and exterior design from a single office rather than splitting the work between a design house and a separate engineering consultancy.

The Cantiere delle Marche Partnership

Buonpensiere and Ennio Cecchini set up Cantiere delle Marche in 2010 and went straight to Cutolo to design what became the Darwin 86, the yard's debut model: We believed that with his knowledge of building complex vessels and my experience in the superyacht world, we could have a viable business, Buonpensiere has said of the decision. The first hull, Vitadimare 3, launched in 2011, and the Darwin Class grew into semi-custom platforms at 86, 102 and 115 feet, all to Hydro Tec naval architecture and exterior lines, extra-thick steel plates, cupro-nickel piping and long range built in from the start. The Flexplorer line followed in 2022, running 130 to 146 feet, still drawn by Hydro Tec, alongside a separate RJ series at the same yard penned by Francesco Paszkowski.

Maverick, the 44.33 metre Flexplorer 146 delivered in 2024, is the clearest recent proof the relationship still delivers: named Lt. Pete Maverick Mitchell for her German owner's fondness for the Top Gun character, she carries a 22mm ice belt at the waterline, a custom A-frame crane and a stern that opens into a beach terrace of more than 135 square metres, and she went on to win the 2025 World Superyacht Award in the Displacement Motor Yachts 40 to 45.9 metre category and a Robb Report Best of the Best award for Best Explorer. Her owner is himself the majority shareholder of Cantiere delle Marche, which does not weaken the design credit, Hydro Tec drew the hull and exterior regardless of who commissioned it, but is worth knowing when reading owner commentary on the boat.

We believed that with his knowledge of building complex vessels and my experience in the superyacht world, we could have a viable business, Cantiere delle Marche's Vasco Buonpensiere has said of hiring Sergio Cutolo to design the yard's first hull in 2010. Fifteen years, a full Darwin and Flexplorer range and a 2025 World Superyacht Award later, Hydro Tec is still the only naval architect CdM's semi-custom ranges have ever used.

What Hydro Tec Has Not Designed

The confusion has an understandable cause. Hydro Tec and Overmarine's Mangusta line both work in the same Italian aluminum planing and open-yacht space, both get covered by the same trade outlets, and Overmarine went on to buy the Baglietto shipyard, Cutolo's own former employer, out of a 2010 liquidation for a reported EUR 33 million, which is enough shared vocabulary in a search result to blur two entirely separate companies. Checking SuperyachtNews, Boat International, Charterworld and Yacht Buyer against each other turned up nothing crediting Hydro Tec, or Cutolo personally, with any Mangusta or Mangusta Oceano hull, current or past. Every credit this research traced for the Mangusta range runs to Righini's earlier work and Mancini's current one.

The real, sourced relationships sit elsewhere: Cantiere delle Marche above, and Rosetti Superyachts and Cantieri di Pesaro below. A buyer researching Italian explorer-yacht designers should treat the Mangusta pairing as a case of two names that share a neighbourhood in the trade press rather than a shared drawing board, and ask any broker who repeats it to point to a specific hull.

Beyond Cantiere delle Marche: the Wider Portfolio

Naumachos gave the studio its founding case for the pocket explorer, a small hull built to genuine long-range, go-anywhere standards rather than styled to look the part, and Hydro Tec's own 2025 anniversary material still cites her directly as the ancestor of the 55 metre Vagrant concept shown at that year's Monaco Yacht Show. Emocean, launched for Rosetti Superyachts in 2021 at 37.83 metres, is the fullest recent demonstration of the integrated model: Hydro Tec supplied the naval architecture, hull and exterior together, and Rosetti's sales and marketing director Andrea Giora has credited Cutolo with guiding the yard's entry into the superyacht market and bringing it its first client for the project. Emocean went on to take a World Superyacht Award of her own, Best Displacement Motor Yacht in the 30 to 44.9 metre, sub-499GT bracket, in 2022.

Beyond those two yards, Hydro Tec's name attaches to the Columbus Crossover, Columbus Classic and Columbus Sport Hybrid ranges built by Columbus Yachts, a Mondomarine 40 metre finished in Viareggio, the Bow Sprit concept for Vittoria Yachts and, most recently, the Seamore34 for Antonini Navi due in 2026. Portfolio counts vary depending on the year and the source: the studio's own current material puts the total at 161 yachts delivered across roughly 4,000 metres of combined length, independent trade profiles over the past several years have put the figure at just over 150, and one 2024 trade estimate, counting hulls still in build alongside delivered ones, put the combined total above 200. None of these figures contradict each other outright, they read as the same growing total measured at different points, but Hydro Tec does not publish one settled number itself.

The Studio Today

The studio restructured in the early 2020s under the MYALNA Group, splitting into separate Hydro Tec Design and Hydro Tec Engineering units, by its own account, while still working as one integrated office on any given project. It marked its 30th anniversary in 2025 by unveiling Vagrant, a 55 metre explorer concept, at the Monaco Yacht Show's Design and Innovation Hub on 30 September, with Cutolo framing it explicitly as a continuation of Naumachos's pocket-explorer thinking rather than a break from it.

Not every concept the studio has shown has turned into a contract. Vanguard 65, a 65.2 metre explorer unveiled around the studio's 25th anniversary in 2020, was still described at the time as not yet having a yard attached, and this research found no later report of one being confirmed. It is a useful reminder for a buyer that a rendering with the Hydro Tec name on it is not the same thing as a hull under construction, the same caution worth applying to any concept still being shown on the stand years after its unveiling.

What a Commission Costs, and What Nobody Publishes

That spread, a factor of five or six depending which trade estimate is used, is itself the honest answer: no single percentage can be quoted for Hydro Tec specifically, and a prospective client should ask for a project-specific number rather than budget off an industry average. What can be checked is resale value rather than commissioning cost: a new Darwin Class 86 lists at roughly EUR 11.95 million, and secondhand examples have traded on the brokerage market between about EUR 9.2 million and USD 11.4 million, figures that describe what a finished, delivered hull is worth, not what Hydro Tec's design and engineering package cost to commission.

On contract structure and copyright, Hydro Tec publishes nothing specific. The professional default across naval architecture, set out in general industry and legal commentary on yacht design contracts, is that the design office retains ownership of its drawings and the design contract with the naval architect is separate from the construction contract with the yard, so an owner planning a second hull from the same lines, or a heavy refit elsewhere, should ask in writing whether any licence extends that far. Nothing found in this research states how long a Hydro Tec brief typically takes from first sketch to a signed yard contract, or what a day rate or fixed design fee looks like for a project the size of a Darwin Class or a Flexplorer.

Who Should Call Ovada

The strongest argument for the studio is the one hardest to dismiss as marketing: Buonpensiere built an entire shipyard's product line around Cutolo's naval architecture in 2010 and is still building to it fifteen years later, and Maverick's 2025 World Superyacht Award and Robb Report Best Explorer award are real, juried results rather than a design-award cabinet assembled from entry fees. Emocean's debut for Rosetti, credited by the yard's own sales and marketing director with bringing it its first superyacht client, shows the same pattern working a second time at a second yard. A buyer who also wants to weigh integrated naval-architecture-and-design studios against each other might reasonably put Vripack, the Dutch office with a similarly combined engineering and design practice built around long-range cruising yachts, on the same shortlist.

The honest caution is just as specific. No fee scale is published anywhere, reported staff numbers and lifetime yacht counts disagree from one trade profile to the next, the flagship reputation runs overwhelmingly through one yard rather than a spread of clients, and at least one publicised concept, Vanguard 65, has gone years without a confirmed yard. Add to that the Mangusta mix-up this research had to run down and rule out, and the sensible approach for any buyer is the same one this page had to take: ask Hydro Tec directly for the specific hull, the specific yard and the specific number, rather than trusting whatever a search engine or a broker's shorthand puts next to the name.

Практическая информация

Design feenot published by Hydro Tec; general trade estimates for a combined naval-architecture-and-design package disagree widely, from roughly 10 to 20 percent of build cost (up to 25-30 percent where customisation is heavy) to a separately cited 3-5 percent for a 60 metre superyacht, too wide a spread to apply to Hydro Tec specifically
Reference pricinga new Cantiere delle Marche Darwin Class 86, drawn by Hydro Tec, lists at roughly EUR 11.95 million; secondhand examples have traded between about EUR 9.2 million and USD 11.4 million; these describe resale value, not the cost of commissioning a new design
Contract structure and copyrightnot published by Hydro Tec specifically; the professional default across naval architecture is that the design office retains ownership of its drawings and the design contract is separate from the client's construction contract with the yard, so ask in writing whether any licence extends to a second hull or a major refit elsewhere
Yards that have built to these drawingsCantiere delle Marche (Darwin Class and Flexplorer, including Maverick); Cantieri di Pesaro (Naumachos); Rosetti Superyachts (Emocean); Columbus Yachts (Crossover, Classic and Sport Hybrid ranges); Mondomarine; Vittoria Yachts (Bow Sprit concept); Antonini Navi (Seamore34, due 2026)
How to commissiondirect contact through the studio's office in Ovada (Alessandria), Italy; no online enquiry process or day-rate schedule is published
How long a brief takesnot published; no source found in this research states a typical timeline from first brief to signed yard contract for a Hydro Tec project
What is not publisheda design fee scale, a confirmed staff headcount (sources disagree, 20-plus versus around 30), a single lifetime yacht count (161 versus 150-plus versus 200-plus depending on source and year), typical brief duration, and any commissioning cost for Maverick or Emocean specifically

Сильные стороны и что учесть

Сильные стороны

  • A fifteen-year, award-winning partnership with one yard, not just a design-award cabinetthe Darwin Class and Flexplorer ranges at Cantiere delle Marche run entirely on Hydro Tec naval architecture and exterior lines, and Maverick, delivered in 2024, won a juried 2025 World Superyacht Award and a Robb Report Best Explorer award rather than a paid-entry design prize
  • Genuinely integrated in-house capability, not a marketing labelhull, naval architecture, structural engineering and exterior styling come from one office, and Rosetti Superyachts credits that package with bringing it its first superyacht client for Emocean, a second yard where the same pattern repeated
  • An engineering pedigree ahead of a styling onefounder Sergio Cutolo ran Baglietto's technical department for close to a decade before founding the studio, which shows in a portfolio built mostly around long-range steel and aluminum explorers rather than showpieces
  • Real diversification across yards, not dependence on a single client relationship for everything it has builtCantieri di Pesaro, Rosetti Superyachts, Columbus Yachts, Mondomarine, Vittoria Yachts and Antonini Navi have all built to Hydro Tec drawings, so a buyer is not limited to one builder's slipway

На что обратить внимание

  • No published fee scale, and the trade estimates that exist disagree by a factor of five or moregeneral industry figures for a combined design-and-engineering package range from roughly 10 to 30 percent of build cost on a custom yacht down to 3 to 5 percent cited separately for a 60 metre superyacht, so a buyer has nothing specific to budget against before asking Hydro Tec directly
  • Disputed staff and portfolio counts across the studio's own material and independent trade profilesreported staff numbers range from just over 20 to around 30 depending on the source and year, and the lifetime yacht count is given as 161 by the studio's own current material, just over 150 in earlier independent profiles and above 200 in one estimate that counts in-build hulls, with no single settled figure published by Hydro Tec itself
  • The flagship reputation leans heavily on one yardthe Darwin Class, the Flexplorer line and the award-winning Maverick are all Cantiere delle Marche, so a buyer drawn in by that record is also, in practice, buying into a yard relationship the studio did not build alone
  • At least one publicised concept has gone nowhere for yearsVanguard 65, a 65.2 metre explorer unveiled around the studio's 25th anniversary in 2020, was reported without a confirmed yard at the time and this research found no later report of one being signed
  • Easily confused, in casual trade coverage, with a brand it has no sourced connection toHydro Tec and Mangusta appear side by side in Italian yacht-design press often enough that the two get conflated, and this research found no source crediting Hydro Tec with any Mangusta or Overmarine hull, current or past

Для кого: Owners planning a genuinely long-range, function-first explorer or expedition yacht who want one office responsible for the hull, naval architecture and exterior together, proven across fifteen years and multiple award-winning hulls with Cantiere delle Marche and a second successful debut at Rosetti Superyachts, rather than anyone chasing a single recognisable house silhouette or a large published fee scale to budget against before the first conversation.
