Steeler's New Ocean Explorer 88 Ranges 5,000nm, No Price Yet

Steeler Yachts has unveiled the Ocean Explorer 88, a 26.7-metre tri-deck steel explorer that stretches the Dutch yard's fastest-growing range past its 85-footer for the first time. It carries a stronger range claim than its sister model and the same full-custom silence on price - a pattern any owner cross-shopping this yard's four-model line should expect going in.

A Fourth Hull, and the First Tri-Deck in the Range

Steeler Yachts unveiled the Ocean Explorer 88 on 19 August 2026, a 26.7-metre steel explorer yacht built on the platform developed for the yard's Ocean Explorer 85 and stretched to a tri-deck layout for the first time in the line. Steeler CEO Yorrith Joosten called it a major step in strengthening the company's position in the explorer market, language that reads as confidence in a segment the Dutch yard has bet heavily on since 2024.

The 88 is the fourth model in Steeler's Ocean Explorer range, joining the 21.45-metre 67, the 22.1-metre 72 and the 26.0-metre 85 that it now sits just above. Every model shares the same construction logic - a round-bilged steel displacement hull under an aluminium superstructure - which means a buyer moving up or down the range is choosing volume and beam, not a different build standard. Exterior design on the 88 comes from Pim Dijksman, the same designer credited on Nikitoo, the first Ocean Explorer 67 hull Steeler delivered earlier this month.

A Full-Beam Owner's Suite Without the Side-Deck Trick

The 88's accommodation runs to four guest cabins: a full-beam owner's suite forward on the main deck, plus a VIP cabin and two further doubles on the lower deck. Crew quarters sleep four, with a dedicated captain's cabin near the bridge - a level of separation the smaller 67 does not carry. At 7.5 metres of beam, Steeler did not need the single-side-deck workaround that defined Nikitoo's 5.60-metre-beam brief; the 88 keeps conventional decks on both sides while still delivering a full-width forward suite, a sign of what the extra 1.9 metres of beam over the 67 actually buys an owner.

The working deck carries two tenders, one roughly 7 metres and one roughly 5 metres, stored and launched from dedicated space rather than davited off the side - standard practice on a genuine long-range explorer, where deck real estate for toys and stores matters as much as guest cabin count. None of this is exotic among 26-to-30-metre steel explorers, but it confirms the 88 is built to the same operational brief as its siblings: an owner who wants to be self-sufficient for weeks, not a boat optimised purely for at-anchor entertaining.

5,000 Nautical Miles, and What Steeler Has Not Yet Said

Steeler's headline number for the 88 is range: more than 5,000 nautical miles, delivered by twin MAN D2676 engines rated at 368kW each. That figure alone puts the 88 ahead of the published range on its closest sibling - Steeler's own Ocean Explorer 85 spec sheet lists 4,500 nautical miles at an 8-knot cruise, with a 12-knot maximum, on 19,400 litres of fuel and 2,500 litres of fresh water. If the 88 genuinely clears 5,000nm on a similar hull form and only 0.7 metres more length, that points to a real efficiency or tankage gain worth having - but it is a claim, not yet a published spec.

What Steeler has not released for the 88 itself is the rest of the performance picture: no cruising or maximum speed, no fuel or water tankage, no draught, no displacement, and no delivery timeline or hull number. That is a wider gap than the yard left on the 67, where Nikitoo's full engine, tankage and speed figures were public within days of delivery. The 85's numbers above are the closest genuine reference point available - and they describe the 85, not the 88, a distinction worth holding onto rather than assuming the two models perform identically.

Steel, Aluminium, and an RINA Class

Classification is RINA Pleasure Yacht, the same standard Steeler builds its whole Ocean Explorer range to, and the hull material is the round-bilged steel and aluminium-superstructure combination the yard has used since the 67. For a long-range owner, that combination matters more than it sounds: steel is repairable at almost any commercial yard in the world, in a way a GRP or aluminium-only hull is not, which is precisely the kind of consideration that separates a genuine ocean-crossing brief from a coastal cruiser dressed as one.

Design continuity across the range is deliberate rather than incidental. Dijksman's exterior work links the 67, the 85 and now the 88, and Steeler has paired him with interior designer Annemarie Dottinga on at least one hull in the range, giving buyers a recognisable design language whichever length they choose. That consistency is worth something to a buyer weighing resale: a Steeler explorer reads as a Steeler explorer across the line, rather than four unrelated one-off designs sharing a badge.

Where the 88 Sits in a Fast-Growing Line

The 88 lands eighteen months into a genuine expansion. Steeler acquired the bankrupt Holterman Shipyard in Meppel in 2024 specifically to add production capacity for the Ocean Explorer range, and the results have followed quickly: the second Ocean Explorer 85 hull, Moss, launched in January 2026 and completed sea trials ahead of a February delivery, and Nikitoo, the first Ocean Explorer 67, was delivered in early August 2026 and is now headed for its public debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. A fourth model unveiled within days of that delivery is not a coincidence - it is a yard moving as fast as its new capacity allows.

For now, the Ocean Explorer 88 is a specification sheet and a rendering, not a hull with a delivery date attached, and Steeler has named no buyer or build slot for it. Anyone approaching the yard about one is buying into the same track record that delivered Moss and Nikitoo close to schedule, not a trialled boat - a reasonable bet given Steeler's recent run, but a different proposition from ordering the 67 or 85, where a real hull now exists to inspect and a genuine owner's brief has already been tested at sea.

What is good, and what to watch

Strong points

  • A range claim that beats its closest siblingMore than 5,000nm on only 0.7 metres more length than the Ocean Explorer 85's published 4,500nm suggests a real efficiency or tankage gain, if the figure holds up once published in full.
  • Full-beam owner's suite without a side-deck compromiseAt 7.5m beam the 88 delivers a full-width forward suite while keeping conventional decks on both sides, something the narrower Ocean Explorer 67 could not do without sacrificing a walkway.
  • A proven build and design language across four hullsSame designer, same steel-and-aluminium construction, same RINA class as the 67, 72 and 85 - a buyer is choosing volume, not gambling on an unproven format.

What to watch

  • No independent or complete performance dataNo cruise speed, maximum speed, tankage, draught or displacement has been published for the 88 itself - only the range figure and engine output are public so far.
  • No delivery date or hull numberUnlike Nikitoo, which was delivered before this unveiling, the 88 has no build slot or timeline attached, so it may still be at the speculative, pre-order stage.
  • No price, as with the rest of the rangeConsistent with Steeler's full-custom quoting practice, but it leaves a prospective buyer with no public anchor for budgeting against rival 26-to-30-metre explorers.
