50m Steel FDHF

When Heesen wanted a 50 metre with true ocean legs and 500 GT of steel-built substance, it drew a fresh Series and handed the pencil to Harrison Eidsgaard. The 50 m Steel FDHF pairs a fast-displacement steel hull with a hybrid-ready engine room. It is the yard's most serious compact displacement yacht, built for long passages in comfort.

Steel for the long game

Heesen made its name in aluminium, so a steel Series is a deliberate statement about range and reassurance. Steel construction adds mass in the right places, which steadies the boat in a seaway and lets the tanks grow. The 50 m Steel FDHF measures 49.9 metres with a 9.6 metre beam and a 2.55 metre draught, and it sits at 499 GT to stay within the practical limits owners prefer. Van Oossanen Naval Architects again supply the Fast Displacement Hull Form. This is a boat conceived for owners who spend real time at sea.

The Series is engineered as a smart-custom project, so buyers start from a proven platform and personalise the parts that matter to them. That approach shortens the build and removes much of the risk that comes with a blank sheet. Accommodation runs to 12 guests in six ensuite staterooms, with quarters for a crew of nine. The brief throughout was seakeeping and self-sufficiency at a size a couple can still call intimate. The engine room and technical spaces were laid out for straightforward maintenance on long, remote itineraries.

Harrison Eidsgaard draws the profile

Heesen appointed Harrison Eidsgaard to shape the exterior, and the London studio gave the Series a timeless, low-slung profile that should age well. The lines are clean and confident, with a strong bow and unbroken glazing that keeps the look modern. The proportions read as a bigger boat, an impression the volume inside supports. From the quay she signals capability more than flash. Owners who dislike fussy detailing find her restraint reassuring.

Outdoor living was planned for warm-weather cruising, with a large sun deck, a sheltered aft cockpit and foredeck seating for quiet mornings. The tender and water toys tuck away so the beach area stays free for swimming. Sightlines from the main deck keep guests connected to the water. Every terrace earns its place in daily use. The foredeck rewards an early coffee before the anchorage wakes.

Space that feels earned

Inside, the 499 GT hull yields volume that a comparable aluminium boat cannot match, and the layout puts it to work. The full-beam owner's suite commands real privacy, and the guest cabins are sized as proper staterooms. The main saloon and dining run open and bright, with glass that draws the horizon indoors. Interiors are tailored to each owner from a well-resolved base.

The steel structure allows heavier finishes and generous joinery without fuss over weight. Storage, wardrobes and stowage were designed for extended time aboard, not a weekend. Crew areas were considered so the service stays invisible and the guest spaces stay serene. This is a boat built to be lived in for weeks at a stretch. Generous glazing carries daylight deep into the lower deck cabins.

Quiet miles

Beneath the accommodation, twin MAN D2862LE438 engines drive the boat to a top speed near 15.5 knots and a comfortable 12 knot cruise. Range runs to roughly 3,800 nautical miles, enough to link the Mediterranean, the Atlantic islands and the Caribbean season without anxiety. The Fast Displacement Hull Form keeps the ride soft and the fuel burn honest across that band. Owners get passage-making ability without a thirst that dominates the budget. Fewer fuel stops leave more freedom to chart an unhurried course.

Heesen offers the Series with its hybrid technology for intelligent power management and near-silent cruising. On electric drive the boat can slip through an anchorage without the hum of a running generator. The benefit is felt as much at rest as under way, in quiet nights and lower emissions. It is a practical answer for owners who cruise sensitive waters.

The owner it suits

The 50 m Steel FDHF is for the owner who measures a yacht by where it can take them. It suits long, self-reliant itineraries and shoulder-season crossings that a lighter boat would treat as an event. Buyers who value substance underfoot and a settled ride in open water will feel at home. The 499 GT ceiling keeps operating life manageable for a private programme. Crew numbers and running costs stay in proportion to the pleasure the boat returns.

It also appeals to the owner stepping up from a smaller boat who wants genuine ocean capability without moving to a large crew and a superyacht footprint. The smart-custom route delivers a personal yacht on a sensible timeline. For families planning real voyages, it answers well. The result is a compact yacht with a very long reach.
