The flagship of the new Maxi Open range

The 165 REV sits at the top of Mangusta's Maxi Open REV family and, at 49.9 metres, it is one of the largest open sport yachts afloat. The yard unveiled it in 2021 as the full expression of the REV language that the 104 had introduced. It is presented as an evolution of the earlier Mangusta 165, a long standing benchmark for the big open format. Building an open boat at this scale is unusual, and several hulls have since been launched.

The model matters because it proves the open sport idea can be scaled to true superyacht volume without losing its character. It carries twelve guests in six cabins and a full crew, yet still runs above 34 knots. That combination is the whole argument of the Maxi Open category, made at the largest size Mangusta offers. For the yard it is both a halo product and a statement of where the brand is heading.

Sport styling on a superyacht scale

Igor Lobanov drew the exterior, taking cues from classic Italian transport design and stretching them over nearly 50 metres of composite hull. Compared with the previous 165 the bow was raised by half a metre and the bridge lifted by 1.2 metres to sharpen the sightlines from the helm. The beam of around 9.2 metres gives the deck real width for its lounges and pool. The silhouette stays low and sporting despite the added volume inside.

Deck space is the headline. A bow lounge of around 60 square metres carries sunpads and seating around an infinity pool with adjustable shading, while the sundeck above adds a bar and further lounging. A beach club opens at the transom, and the main deck uses full height windows and sliding doors for balcony access. The Williams 625 tender was moved into a transverse garage that also separates the guest cabins from the engine room.

A main deck owner's world

Inside, the full beam owner's stateroom sits on the main deck and is arranged as a two level loft with curved windows and a circular bed. The bathroom is finished in onyx, and the suite trades the usual forward master for something closer to a private apartment. Overmarine Group's design office developed the interior, and as across the range it is offered as a custom commission. The scale allows a properly residential feel on board.

The lower deck holds four guest staterooms and a VIP suite, keeping the guest party well served without crowding the owner's space. Crew accommodation for nine to ten people is placed so that service routes stay out of the guests' way. Full height glazing on the main deck pulls light deep into the saloon and keeps the connection to the sea that defines the open format. Materials and layout are set hull by hull to the owner's brief.

Four engines, four waterjets

The 165 REV is driven by four MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines, each of 2,600 hp, feeding a set of Kamewa waterjets. Top speed is about 34 knots with a cruise near 30 knots at half load. The yard reports roughly 30 per cent lower fuel use than the earlier 165 at comparable speeds, a gain that comes from the new hull and the updated propulsion. As on the smaller REV, waterjets give the boat its agility and let it work a shallow draught of around two metres.

The structure follows Mangusta's open range practice, with a single skin composite hull and a sandwich composite superstructure to keep weight in check on a yacht of about 310 tonnes at full load. Range is quoted near 650 nautical miles at cruising speed, so the boat is built for fast regional passages rather than ocean crossings. Zero speed and under way stabilisers hold the yacht steady at anchor and on the move. This is engineering aimed at speed with comfort, not at endurance.

For the owner who will not slow down

The 165 REV is aimed at an owner who wants the accommodation of a 50 metre superyacht but refuses to give up open sport speed. It suits a large family or a group of guests, with twelve berths and expansive social decks for entertaining at anchor. Its element is fast Mediterranean and warm water cruising, moving quickly between glamorous ports and reaching them well ahead of a conventional displacement yacht. The car style helm keeps the owner driver involved even at this size.

Commercially the boat occupies a thin part of the market, since very few builders offer an open yacht near 50 metres. That scarcity is part of its appeal to buyers who want something distinct from the usual flybridge superyacht. It anchors the top of the REV range and gives the smaller models a clear aspirational reference. For the right owner the mix of speed, volume and rarity is difficult to find elsewhere.
