The 118's bloodline, outboard edition

Every wallypower descends from the 118, the gas-turbine icon that put the name into museums, and the 58 platform is where that language now lives at day-boat size. The inboard wallypower58 made its world premiere at the Venice Boat Show in 2022 as the first wallypower of the Ferretti Group era, and the X version followed at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in March 2023, aimed squarely at the outboard-loving American market.

The X formula is simple, take the 17.4 metre deep-V hull, remove the pods and mount four Mercury Verado V12 600 outboards on the transom. The result is 2,400 horsepower, a 50 knot top speed and a boat that shrugs off the chop that punishes flatter-bottomed rivals. The angular, stealthy styling needs no badge, at speed or at rest it reads as a Wally from across the bay.

Fifty knots, delivered civilised

The headline number is 50 knots, but the useful one is the 38 knot cruise, a pace the 58X holds for 320 nautical miles on its 4,100 litres of fuel. That converts to Monaco to Porto Cervo between lunch and dinner, or a Bahamas run that leaves the morning free. The V12 outboards steer through rotating gearcases and answer to joystick control, so close-quarters handling is as undramatic as the open-water pace is dramatic.

The deep-V hull is the reason the speed is usable. Wally's power boats have always favoured wave-cutting geometry over raw planing surface, and the 58X carries that philosophy at a deadrise that softens landings and keeps spray down when the afternoon breeze builds. Twelve people can ride in comfort, which turns the performance into a shared event instead of a helmsman's private thrill.

Draft is the second superpower

Four outboards do more than push. With the engines trimmed, draft drops to 1.3 metres against the 1.7 metres of the IPS-driven 58, and that difference rewrites the chart. Sandbars, beach anchorages and the skinny water of the Bahamas or the Balearics all open up, and the hydraulic passerelle handles boarding wherever the boat noses in. Folding bulwarks widen the deck at anchor in the classic Wally manner.

The deck plan is pure day-yacht logic, one continuous social platform running from the bow lounge to the transom, with protected seating amidships and sun exactly where guests want it. Below, the cabin sleeps one or two couples with a proper shower room, enough for an overnight to make the morning swim private, while the boat's real accommodation remains the sea around it.

X or IPS, two honest answers

Wally keeps both versions in the range because they serve different lives. The inboard 58 runs triple Volvo Penta pods, IPS700 standard or IPS800 optional on the D8 block, chosen for shallow draft by inboard standards, redundancy and a clean transom, and it tops out at 36 to 38 knots with dynamic positioning and assisted docking in the package. It is the quieter, longer-legged Mediterranean specification.

The X trades a little refinement for a lot of velocity and even less draft, and its outboards simplify maintenance in markets where V12 service is a dockside routine. Same hull, same glass, same design authority, two propulsion personalities. The choice usually makes itself by geography, pods for the Riviera and the islands, outboards for Florida, the Bahamas and anywhere the water gets thin and the runs get long.

The case for the fast Wally

The 58X competes in the crowded super-console market against Americans with more horsepower and Italians with more upholstery, and it beats both on identity. Nothing else at 57 feet carries this much design discipline, and nothing this styled carries this much genuine offshore ability. As a superyacht chase boat it matches the mothership's aesthetic instead of arguing with it, and as a standalone day yacht it makes every arrival an event.

It is also the honest expression of what most owners actually do with a boat this size, run fast, anchor shallow, host twelve, sleep aboard occasionally.
