Zuccon International Project

Zuccon International Project is a Roman family studio with roots in architecture as much as yachts. Founded in 1984 by Gianni Zuccon and Paola Galeazzi, it has drawn hundreds of production and custom yachts, many for the Ferretti Group. It is now led by their children.

A Roman design house

Gianni Zuccon and his late wife Paola Galeazzi came to yacht design from an architectural background and formally founded the studio in 1984. The couple had begun designing yachts together in the early 1970s, well before the firm took its name. The office is based in Rome and works across the architecture and design of yachts from concept to completion. Its portfolio runs to hundreds of semi-custom and custom yachts. That volume of work over four decades is among the largest of any Italian studio.

The studio remains a family concern, and Gianni and Paola's children Martina and Bernardo now lead the practice. That continuity has kept a consistent philosophy across four decades of work. The team has grown into a sizeable multidisciplinary office. Its architectural roots still shape how it approaches a yacht. The founders trained as architects first and carried that thinking onto the water.

Architecture that floats

Zuccon treats a yacht as a piece of architecture, with a strong interest in how people move through and use the spaces. The studio favours generous glass, a close connection to the sea and interiors that feel open and liveable. Its exteriors are elegant and restrained rather than aggressive. That measured, architectural sensibility runs through both its production and custom work. The studio designs for how a family really lives aboard rather than for show.

The office thinks about light, volume and the relationship between decks in the way a building designer thinks about rooms and floors. This has made its yachts feel spacious and calm inside. The approach suits owners who want a home at sea rather than a statement of speed. It is a quietly Italian take on luxury. Comfort and daylight come before spectacle in the interiors it draws.

From Posillipo to Chopi Chopi

The studio's nautical debut came in the 1970s when it won a Cantieri di Posillipo competition, producing an early series of yachts that established its name in Italy. A long partnership with the Ferretti Group followed, yielding many production models across the group's brands. The 80 metre Chopi Chopi, built by CRN, is the studio's largest project and a landmark custom yacht. Cloud 9, 74 metres from CRN in 2017 and since renamed Starburst IV, is another notable large delivery. The move into larger custom yachts grew from a deep base of production work.

Across the decades the office has shaped a very large number of hulls, from mid-size production boats to major custom yachts. Its work for Custom Line and other Ferretti brands has put the Zuccon look on the water in quantity. That combination of volume and the occasional flagship is unusual. It reflects a studio equally at home in series and one-off design. Few practices move so easily between a small production boat and an 80 metre custom yacht.

Yards, series and owners

Zuccon's deep relationship with the Ferretti Group is central to its business and gives it a steady pipeline of production work. Designing series yachts demands discipline over cost and repeatability, which the studio has mastered over many models. On custom projects such as Chopi Chopi it works one to one with an owner and yard. The office moves comfortably between these two very different ways of working. The office moves between series and custom work more comfortably than most houses do.

Its architectural background helps when translating an owner's way of life into a general arrangement. The studio is used to guiding buyers through the choices that shape a yacht's interior volumes. Long experience with Italian yards means it understands their construction methods well. That fluency keeps its designs buildable and on budget. Knowing a yard's methods from the inside helps it avoid costly surprises during a build.

A fixture of Italian yachting

With hundreds of yachts to its name, Zuccon is one of the most established design houses in Italy. Its influence is felt as much through popular production ranges as through headline custom yachts. The studio's steady, architectural style has aged well across four decades. That consistency is the basis of its standing. The Zuccon look has stayed recognisable even as tastes around it have changed.

The passing of the practice to the founders' children has secured its future. The office continues to design across the size range for major Italian builders. Its blend of architecture and yacht design remains distinctive. Zuccon is woven into the story of modern Italian yachting. Its influence reaches owners who may never learn the studio's name.

Who it is for: Owners who want an architectural, light-filled yacht from a studio fluent in both production and custom work.
