Five generations on the old Zuiderzee

In 1884 Jan Jans Huisman started building wooden workboats at Ronduite, a hamlet on the water meadows of the old Zuiderzee. The yard that grew from that shed now sits in Vollenhove, a few kilometres away, and it has spent fourteen decades doing one thing: building boats to a standard the family name could survive. Steel came in 1954, aluminium in 1964, long before most of the industry trusted the material. On the firm's centenary in 1984, Queen Beatrix granted the Royal title, and Huisman became Royal Huisman.

The pedigree is not ceremonial. Flyer, a Huisman-built ketch, won the 1977-78 Whitbread Round the World Race, and Flyer II followed by taking line honours on every leg of the 1981-82 edition. Ocean racing taught the yard its lasting habits, obsessive weight control, engineering that holds up mid-ocean, and systems a crew can fix a thousand miles from a dock. Those habits are still what an owner is buying.

The aluminium house

Royal Huisman builds in aluminium and has done for sixty years, latterly in Alustar, the high-strength alloy it introduced to yachting with the sloop Pamina in 2000. Aluminium suits owners who think in decades. It does not fatigue like lighter composites, it can be cut open and rebuilt through refit after refit, and it holds value on the brokerage market because surveyors know exactly what they are looking at. The yard's Featherlight method, proven on Nilaya in 2023, bonds carbon fibre to the aluminium structure and strips around eleven percent of the weight without giving up that durability.

The other half of the story is Rondal, the sister company founded in 1975 a short walk from the build halls. Rondal makes the carbon spars, winches, hatches and deck hardware, which means Royal Huisman is one of very few yards on earth that controls hull, rig and hardware under one roof. When Ngoni needed a 71 metre one-piece carbon mast, among the largest single spars ever built, it came from the family.

Sail first, then everything else

The fleet list reads like a history of large sailing yachts. Athena, at 90 metres, remains one of the largest private sailing yachts ever built. Sea Eagle II, an 81 metre three-masted schooner delivered in 2020, is the largest aluminium sailing yacht in the world. Between them sit Bucket winners, award sweepers and one-off machines like Ngoni, commissioned with the brief to build a beast.

The last five years widened the range. PHI, delivered in 2021, was reported at delivery as the longest motoryacht in the world under 500 gross tons. Special One, delivered in 2024, is the largest true sportfish yacht ever built. Huisfit, the group's refit arm, took over the 12,000 square metre former Holland Jachtbouw site in Amsterdam in 2019 and keeps the existing fleet young.

What a Huisman means for an owner

Royal Huisman delivers one or two yachts in a typical year. That scarcity is structural, every project is engineered from a clean sheet with the owner's team, and the yard will not scale its way out of it. The order book runs years ahead and includes the 85 metre Project 410, drawn by German Frers to become the largest sloop in the world, and the 81 metre Project 412, commissioned by a returning owner. Aquarius II, the 65 metre ketch delivered in 2025 to owners who came back for a second, larger boat, is the most honest endorsement a shipyard can earn.

In 2024, on its 140th anniversary, the group announced Dutch investment firm O2 Capital Partners as its new shareholder, with management unchanged under CEO Jan Timmerman. For a buyer, the calculus is simple. A Huisman is a certified piece of Dutch engineering with a documented build, a rig from its own spar maker, and a resale history that treats the name as a proof mark.
