Westport takes its name from the Washington fishing town where it opened in 1964, building commercial fishing boats and fast passenger ferries for some of the roughest working water in North America. Its first commercial craft was delivered in 1965, and that heritage still defines the product: boats engineered for hard use, finished to schedule and built to be run, season after season, without drama.
As demand for large private yachts grew through the 1980s, the yard turned its composite expertise toward luxury construction, and between 1984 and 1997 it quietly built hulls for some of the industry's most respected yards, builders whose own standards accepted nothing less. Today Westport has delivered more than 160 yachts, which makes it the largest superyacht builder in North America and one of the most prolific anywhere.
Westport was a pioneer of composite construction and remains one of its most sophisticated practitioners. Every hull and major deck part comes out of a one-piece precision-engineered mold, and before the first hull of any new series is laminated, the yard invests in tooling, process flow and systems patterning the way an aircraft program would. The structural engineering is done with the same three-dimensional modeling software used in aviation.
The work happens at three yards in Washington State, in Westport, Hoquiam and Port Angeles, each concentrating on a limited set of configurations, supported by the company's own cabinet and carpentry shop for joinery. A large in-house staff of naval architects, marine engineers and designers runs the programs, while sales, brokerage, charter and service operate from Fort Lauderdale.
Westport's stability is underwritten by serious marine money. Orin Edson, the founder of Bayliner, invested in the company in 1997 and scaled the yacht business through its defining decades. In June 2014 the yard was acquired by an ownership group led by Gary Chouest and the Chouest family, principals of Edison Chouest Offshore, one of the largest marine services groups in the United States.
The Chouest family also owns American Custom Yachts in Florida, so the parent has genuine boatbuilding conviction, and it kept all three Washington yards running after the purchase. For a buyer this matters in plain terms: the builder behind your warranty, your refit and your resale story is industrially backed and has been continuously in business for six decades.
On Time, On Budget As Promised is the slogan Westport actually operates by. A Westport is sold at a fixed specification and a fixed USD price with a known delivery date, classed by ABS and MCA compliant, and the fleet history backs the promise up. Repeat buyers are a large share of the order book, which is the strongest endorsement any yard can show.
The series model pays off again at exit. Because every Westport has sisterships, standardized systems and a surveyor-friendly build record, the brand holds value and trades quickly on the brokerage market. Add an American service network and parts commonality across dozens of hulls, and ownership stays predictable from contract to resale.
