Getting to Belize
International routing runs mainly through the United States, with connections onward from Miami, Houston and other US gateways, plus a smaller number of direct Central American and Caribbean links. Private jet charter brokers list Belize City as bookable for direct arrival, and the airport's FBO handles ground transport, customs and fuel for private traffic.
Exact fare and flight-time figures for the BZE to San Pedro or BZE to Placencia legs were not confirmed in this research and should be checked directly against Tropic Air's or Maya Island Air's own booking engines when planning a guest change, since both carriers run frequent but not identical schedules.

Clearing in, and the reef passes
Once inside the reef, navigation is explicitly line-of-sight: shallow water and sparse navigational aids mean a bow watch is standard practice, and charter operators require a local captain aboard for anything beyond the immediate reef or in the less charted southern reaches. The reef itself runs some 175 to 190 nautical miles depending on the source, protecting roughly 450 sand and mangrove cays inside it, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 as the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System.
A cruising permit is issued on arrival, and Belize's port authority publishes a granular fee schedule by gross tonnage rather than a single flat charge: under 50 GT pays no pilot-waiver fee, 50 to 100 GT around 150 Belize dollars, rising to 750 dollars above 2,000 GT, with separate port dues on a similar sliding scale. Customs, Immigration and the Agricultural Health Authority all inspect on arrival, and San Pedro's clearance office runs weekdays 08:00 to noon and 13:00 to 17:00.

The second largest barrier reef in the world, navigated line-of-sight, with one true superyacht marina and a hurricane record that put the capital 50 miles inland.

The marinas, and where the real capacity is
Placencia Marina supplies power up to dual 100 amp 480 volt three-phase service, fuel in any quantity on request, and full resort amenities including a pool and a dive shop; a 2013 trade-press report from CharterWorld independently corroborates its launch as Belize's first superyacht-class marina. Its 16 foot draft claim, though, currently traces mainly to the marina's own marketing rather than an independent surveyor or trade source, and is worth confirming before a large yacht commits to it.
Hummingbird Marina, also in Placencia, is the only haul-out and launch facility between Belize City and Guatemala, with a fuel dock carrying both diesel and gasoline, though it is scaled for working boats and large catamarans rather than superyacht refit. Cucumber Beach Marina, just south of Belize City, is cited as a convenient, safe place to leave a boat while a crew visits the interior.

Season, and the real hurricane record
Hurricane Hattie made landfall near Belize City on 31 October 1961 as a Category 4, damaging about 70 percent of the city's buildings, leaving 10,000 people homeless and killing more than 260, an event serious enough that it drove the relocation of the national capital inland to Belmopan. Hurricane Richard followed a similar track in October 2010 as a Category 1, and Hurricane Lisa made landfall about 11.5 miles southwest of Belize City in November 2022 as a strong Category 1, damaging roughly 5,000 homes and destroying 500 more.
That is three landfalls at or near the same city across 61 years, a pattern worth weighing against the dry-season appeal. A yacht wintering in the region typically moves to Rio Dulce in Guatemala for the season, a river system 25 miles inland from the coastal mountains that has never recorded a hurricane crossing it, and which functions as the de facto regional hurricane hole and refit centre for Belize-based boats.

The Blue Hole, Turneffe and where you can anchor
A typical superyacht itinerary published by Boat International runs Belize City to Goff's Caye, about 13 nautical miles, then on to Turneffe Atoll, then to Half Moon Caye and Lighthouse Reef, a five to six day loop. Superyachts anchor off the southeast coast of Lighthouse Reef near Half Moon Caye, home to thousands of nesting red-footed boobies, and tender the roughly 5 nautical miles north to the Blue Hole itself rather than anchoring directly over it.
Marine reserves inside the reef system, including Hol Chan near Ambergris Caye and the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve, require mooring buoys rather than anchoring on coral, and Hol Chan's own entrance fee rose to 15 US dollars a head on 1 August 2024, reduced from a proposed 20 dollars after member pushback, with the reserve's own director citing the area's growth from about 5 square miles in 1987 to more than 160 square miles today as the reason more funding is needed.

Costs, fuel and provisioning
Provisioning in San Pedro is workable but expensive by regional standards, restaurant variety runs from Cajun to Thai to Indian, and both Placencia Marina and Hummingbird Marina offer fuel and provisioning support directly. Mooring inside the marine parks runs around 20 to 25 US dollars a night against the far larger mooring fields of the British Virgin Islands, and Belize carries none of the Bahamas' added charter tax, which one Caribbean charter comparison names as making the Bahamas the most expensive charter destination in the region per dollar spent.
What is not published: a confirmed current fuel price per gallon in Belize, and independent, non-marina-sourced confirmation of Placencia Marina's 16 foot draft claim. Both are worth a direct call before committing a passage plan to them.
San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Placencia at ground level
Ambergris Caye itself takes its name from the whale-derived amber once collected on its shores, and San Pedro's downtown runs on golf carts and small boats rather than cars, a texture that keeps the town's character closer to a fishing village than a resort strip despite decades of tourism growth. Caye Caulker markets itself on the same barrier reef access with noticeably less development, popular with a younger, more budget-driven sailing crowd than San Pedro's charter fleet.
Placencia, reached by the same domestic air links as San Pedro, is where the two purpose-built marinas sit, and its village retains a slower pace than Ambergris Caye's main strip even as Placencia Marina and Hummingbird Marina have brought in more serious yacht traffic over the past decade. All three settlements depend on the same imported provisioning chain, so price and selection vary less between them than the difference in atmosphere would suggest, and a crew provisioning for a longer stay should still expect to top up in Belize City or bring in stores from Mexico or the US before a passage south. Diving is the common thread across all three: Hol Chan Marine Reserve sits a short run from San Pedro, Caye Caulker's own Split channel draws snorkellers straight off the town beach, and Placencia's position at the southern end of the reef puts Laughing Bird Caye and the Sapodilla Cayes within a comfortable day's run.
Why an owner goes there, and the honest limits
Xunantunich, about 90 minutes inland by road with a hand-cranked ferry crossing of the Mopan River, and Lamanai, reached by a wildlife-rich boat trip up the New River, are both marketed directly to yacht and cruise-ship guests as day excursions. Cruising World's own account of sailing Belize calls it explicitly the other Caribbean, built on barrier-reef sailing, marine reserves and jungle wildlife rather than a marina and beach-club circuit.
The structural gap is technical support. Belize has no in-country superyacht refit capability; Hummingbird Marina's haul-out tops out at working-boat and large-catamaran scale, and anything beyond routine repair routes to Rio Dulce in Guatemala or to Florida. An owner should treat Belize as a destination to visit for its reef and its ruins, provisioned and serviced from elsewhere, not a place to base a large yacht year-round.

Cosa riferiscono armatori ed equipaggi
Navigation demands real local knowledge
Belize cruising is line-of-sight in shallow, sparsely marked water, a bow watch is standard practice, and a local captain is effectively required for sailing beyond the barrier reef or into the southern reaches.
Cruising World, 'Belize: The Other Caribbean,' 15 August 2016A full superyacht itinerary exists and is documented
A five to six day loop from Belize City to Goff's Caye, Turneffe Atoll, Half Moon Caye and Lighthouse Reef Atoll is a workable, published route for a large yacht, anchoring off Half Moon Caye and tendering to the Blue Hole.
Boat International, superyacht Belize itinerary, 15 November 2016The Hol Chan fee rise was contested and then reduced
The reserve's board initially agreed a rise to 20 US dollars before reducing it to 15 dollars after member pushback, citing the reserve's growth from about 5 to more than 160 square miles as the reason for needing more funding.

Cosa convince e cosa va valutato
Punti di forza
- The reef and the Blue Hole are genuinely world-classThe second largest barrier reef system after Australia's, UNESCO-listed since 1996, with the Cousteau-famous Great Blue Hole and Turneffe Atoll's noted fly fishing inside a five to six day loop from Belize City.
- Calm, protected, line-of-sight cruisingMost of the ground inside the reef is shallow and sheltered, a genuinely different character from open-ocean Caribbean passages, though it demands a bow watch and local knowledge.
- Genuinely uncrowded against the eastern CaribbeanNo yacht-club scene comparable to Monaco, St Barths or the Balearics, and Maya ruins reachable as a shore excursion give it a different draw entirely.
Da valutare
- Real hurricane exposure, not a footnoteBelize City has taken a direct or near-direct hit in 1961, 2010 and 2022, and the 1961 storm was severe enough to move the national capital inland.
- Only one marina is genuinely built for a large yachtPlacencia Marina's own 16 foot draft claim is currently sourced mainly to its own marketing; San Pedro's alternative is capped around 6-6.5 feet and reported in poor condition.
- No real refit capability in the countryHummingbird Marina's haul-out serves working boats and large catamarans, not superyacht refit; anything larger routes to Rio Dulce or Florida.
- No superyacht charter fleet operating here yetThis research found no superyacht-class crewed catamaran currently operating in Belize, a real gap against the established BVI and Bahamas fleets.
A chi si rivolge: An owner who wants world-class reef diving and the Blue Hole without the eastern Caribbean's crowds, and who accepts that outside Placencia there is nowhere to put a large yacht and no real technical support in the country.
