Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design

Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design has spent more than 40 years drawing the fastest maxi raceboats afloat, from the 1992 America's Cup winner America3 to a run of Wallcento grand-prix machines, before naval-architecture partnerships pulled the San Diego studio into sailing superyachts. Its clearest superyacht credential is Nilaya, the 46.82m Royal Huisman delivered in 2023, where Reichel/Pugh drew the hull and Nauta Design did the styling. Both founders, John Reichel and Jim Pugh, still run the firm themselves, more than four decades after they met in a rival designer's garage.

A Partnership Forged in Doug Peterson's San Diego Studio

Pugh grew up in Liverpool and raced professionally before he managed construction of Peterson's 42-foot Williwaw, which brought him into Peterson's San Diego design office. Reichel grew up sailing out of Oyster Bay, New York, studied naval architecture at the University of Michigan, and apprenticed with Peterson in the early 1980s. The two met there, and in 1983 struck out on their own, running the new firm out of Pugh's garage before it grew into a standalone practice. Both accounts appear consistently across the firm's own team page and John Reichel's National Sailing Hall of Fame biography.

The partnership's early boats built its reputation fast: Blade Runner won at the St Francis Yacht Club in 1984, and Taxi Dancer took the Transpacific Race in 1989. The real breakthrough came in 1991, when industrialist Bill Koch recruited Reichel and Pugh to design America3 for his America's Cup defense syndicate. America3 beat Dennis Conner's underfunded Stars & Stripes in the Citizen Cup defender trials, then went on to defeat Italy's Il Moro di Venezia to win the 1992 America's Cup, launching the firm to international attention inside a decade of opening its doors.

Four Decades of Maxi-Yacht and Grand-Prix Silverware

Wild Oats XI, built for the Sydney-Hobart, delivered the race's rare trifecta twice under a Reichel/Pugh hull: line honours, the race record and overall handicap in both 2005 and 2012, a result few other yachts of any design house have matched. Sister raceboats Alfa Romeo, Alive and Black Jack have added further Sydney-Hobart line-honours results across the same fleet, and the firm's one-design work, the Melges 24 and Melges 32, put its hull shapes under club sailors as well as grand-prix crews.

At the top end of maxi racing, the 100-foot Wallcento Magic Carpet 3 was Maxi World Champion in both 2014 and 2021, with stablemate Galateia adding a 2017 world title and a second place in 2022. Reichel/Pugh's recreation of the 1937 J-Class Ranger, built to the original Burgess and Stephens lines, won the J-Class division at the 2022 St Barths Bucket under America's Cup-winning helmsman Ed Baird, beating modern rivals Hanuman and Velsheda on her competitive debut. By the 2022 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, Reichel/Pugh designs had accumulated 41 class-division wins over 24 years of the regatta, a record the firm's own site and IMA-linked press coverage both report.

Nigel Ingram, the owners' project manager on Nilaya, put it plainly after sea trials: for a yacht her size, the acceleration is exciting, and the rig is the best big-boat rig he has seen.

A Ten-Person Studio in San Diego, Both Founders Still at the Boards

The studio works from 2924 Emerson Street in San Diego's Point Loma neighbourhood. Pugh drives design concepts and the client relationship; Reichel, whom Pugh has described as having an uncanny ability to grasp quickly where art and science meet in yacht design, leads the technical and hydrodynamic side. Senior staff named on the firm's own team page include Anthony Beale, a Webb Institute naval architecture graduate who joined in 2005 and now leads naval architecture and project management, and David Oliver, a University of Michigan naval architecture graduate who joined in 2014 and handles structural engineering.

John Reichel was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2025, the same year the firm's own site was still listing him as an actively engaged principal on current projects, including the 100-foot superyacht Galateia. That both founders remain personally at their boards, rather than having sold the practice or stepped back into a purely advisory role, sets Reichel/Pugh apart from several peer naval architecture houses of the same 1980s generation whose founders have since retired or been absorbed into larger design groups.

Nilaya: The Naval Architecture Behind Royal Huisman's Featherlight Flagship

Nilaya is a 47m, aluminium-hulled, carbon-superstructure sloop built at Royal Huisman's Vollenhove yard and delivered in 2023, using the yard's Featherlight construction approach to cut roughly 11 percent of the weight of a typical Royal Huisman cruising yacht of similar size, according to the builder. Reichel/Pugh's naval architecture and Rondal's carbon Panamax rig with an Integrated Sailing System are the technical core of the boat; Nauta Design, credited separately with the general concept, exterior and interior, already has its own page on this site covering that side of the project in full.

Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport, the owners' project manager, said after sea trials that for such a large yacht the acceleration was exciting, and separately called the rig the best big-boat rig he had seen. Royal Huisman's own press coverage credits the yacht with a Robb Report Best of the Best Sailing Yacht award, and the pairing is formally billed in the builder's own materials as a Reichel/Pugh-Nauta 154, acknowledging both firms by name on a single delivered hull rather than crediting one over the other.

Beyond Nilaya: Hetairos, My Song and a Longer List of Grand-Prix Superyachts

Hetairos, delivered by Baltic Yachts in 2011 at 66.7m, was Baltic's largest superyacht at the time and combined Reichel/Pugh's racing-derived naval architecture with Dykstra Naval Architects on a single hull. She took line honours in the 2011 Transatlantic Superyacht Regatta and Maxi Yacht Cup, crossing from the Canaries to the British Virgin Islands in 8 days, 10 hours, 58 minutes and 30 seconds at an average of 15.12 knots and a recorded top speed of 25.7 knots, and the 2012 World Superyacht Awards cited her for notable contribution to the technical advancement of sailing superyachts.

My Song, a Baltic 130 delivered in 2016 with a Reichel/Pugh hull and Nauta Design styling, was named Most Innovative Yacht and Sailing Yacht of the Year at the 2017 World Superyacht Awards, then set a monohull record in the 2018 RORC Transatlantic Race at 10 days, 5 hours, 47 minutes and 11 seconds, at just over 105 tonnes fully loaded, roughly half the displacement of comparably sized cruising superyachts. Earlier work includes Visione, a 44.85m Baltic delivered in 2002, and Vitters' 44m Magic, delivered in 2024 with Reichel/Pugh naval architecture and deck design; set against the firm's raceboat volume, these remain a short list of large sailing-superyacht deliveries rather than a deep back catalogue.

What a Naval-Architecture-Only Commission Means, and What It Costs

Nothing in the firm's own site, in Boat International or SuperyachtTimes' company profiles, or in the press coverage of Nilaya, Hetairos or My Song discloses what Reichel/Pugh charges a client. That absence held consistent across every source checked for this page. General, non-firm-specific industry guides for custom yacht projects put a fixed design commission at roughly 10 to 12 percent of as-built cost, but that figure comes from production and small-craft design-cost guides rather than anything Reichel/Pugh has published, and should be read as market context only, not a quote.

What is clear from every named superyacht project is the shape of the scope: Reichel/Pugh supplies naval architecture, hull form, structural engineering and performance prediction using CFD and FEA analysis, and a separate studio supplies the styling. On Nilaya and My Song that studio was Nauta Design; Hetairos split naval architecture with Dykstra rather than adding a stylist at all. A buyer commissioning Reichel/Pugh for a superyacht should expect to run, and coordinate, at least two design contracts and a yard contract, not one all-in relationship, which is a materially different buying process from a full-service styling-and-architecture studio.

What Is Not Published, and the Open Questions Around This Studio

Reported staff size varies by source, from a formally named roster of five people on the firm's own team page to a round figure of about ten in third-party directories; neither figure is dated precisely, and this page uses the more conservative range. Nilaya's exact delivery date also varies across otherwise reliable sources, some placing sea trials and handover in the spring of 2023 and others giving a early-summer date; this page states only the year, 2023, which every source agrees on, rather than a specific date no two sources confirm the same way.

Named competitors and occasional collaborators working the same waters include Farr Yacht Design, Dykstra Naval Architects, which co-designed Hetairos directly, and German Frers; all three have their own pages on this site and are worth comparing directly rather than taking Reichel/Pugh's word for where it sits among them. The clearest honest summary for a buyer: this is a raceboat naval architecture specialist with an outstanding, independently documented competitive record, that has done a small, named number of large sailing superyachts well, rather than a volume superyacht design house with a long delivery list to point to.

What is NOT always includedExterior and interior styling. Reichel/Pugh's scope is naval architecture, hull form and structural engineering; a separate stylist (Nauta Design on Nilaya and My Song) or co-naval-architect (Dykstra on Hetairos) is a distinct, separately contracted credit on every named project

نقاط القوة وما يستدعي الانتباه

نقاط القوة

  • An unmatched, independently documented racing recordA 1992 America's Cup win, Wild Oats XI's rare Sydney-Hobart trifecta twice over, and 41 Maxi World Championship class-division wins across 24 years are results reported by regatta organisers and trade press, not the firm's own claims alone.
  • Both founders still personally active after more than 40 yearsJim Pugh and John Reichel remain President and Vice President respectively, with Reichel inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2025 while still named on current projects, a continuity few peer 1980s-founded design houses can match.
  • A named, on-record superyacht partnership with real performance dataNilaya and Hetairos both carry specific, sourced quotes from named owners' representatives and race crew, plus measurable results such as Hetairos's transatlantic line-honours record, rather than only marketing copy.

ما يستدعي الانتباه

  • A short list of large sailing-superyacht deliveries next to a very large raceboat portfolioVerified named superyacht deliveries researched for this page number a handful, Nilaya, Hetairos, My Song and Visione among them, against dozens of documented maxi raceboats, so buyers should judge the firm chiefly on its raceboat depth.
  • Naval-architecture-only scope means a second design contract is always requiredReichel/Pugh does not offer exterior or interior styling in-house, so a buyer must separately commission and coordinate a stylist, as Nilaya's owner did with Nauta Design, adding a second relationship to manage on top of the yard contract.
  • No public fee information and inconsistent staff and date figures across sourcesNo design fee is published anywhere researched for this page, reported staff size ranges from five named people to a round figure of about ten depending on the source, and even Nilaya's precise delivery date is not consistent across otherwise reliable coverage.

لمين هو: An owner planning a genuinely fast sailing yacht or raceboat, from grand-prix maxi to a large sailing superyacht, who is prepared to commission naval architecture and styling as two separate contracts rather than one, is the right buyer for Reichel/Pugh.
