Marina da Gloria (Rio de Janeiro)

Marina da Gloria sits inside Parque do Flamengo on the shore of Guanabara Bay, the Rio de Janeiro venue where Olympic and Paralympic sailors raced in 2016 and where a Federal Regional Court annulled the operator's concession contract in February 2020, a ruling that has still not stopped Rio Boat Show, ArtRio, a winter music festival and a Carnival warm-up party from filling its docks and green esplanade every year since, 2026 included. BR Marinas, the company running it as Axia Marina da Gloria, was separately fined 19.4 million reais by the federal government's own property agency in 2022 for building on public land without authorization. None of that shows up in the marketing photos of superyachts against Sugarloaf Mountain, and almost none of it shows up in the 415 tourist reviews on file, which are almost entirely about the restaurants and the park rather than the berths.

Where the Marina Actually Sits

Marina da Gloria occupies a cut in Parque do Flamengo, the 120-hectare landfill park that runs along Guanabara Bay between downtown Rio de Janeiro and the Botafogo and Gloria neighbourhoods, designed by landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx around Affonso Eduardo Reidy's 1960s park plan. Wikipedia places the marina at roughly 22 55 13 S, 43 10 11 W, a reading Navily's own marina profile matches closely at 22 55.12 S, 43 10.23 W, a few hundred metres apart across a marina that itself spans several hundred metres of shoreline.

The setting is the sales pitch. Royal palms planted through the park frame a direct view of Sugarloaf Mountain across the bay from the marina's own quay, and Corcovado's Christ the Redeemer is visible from the water on a clear day. Downtown Rio and Santos Dumont Airport, which BR Marinas advertises as reachable by an exclusive internal route from the marina complex, sit within a few minutes by car, and the metro, VLT tram and city bus terminals used for Aterro do Flamengo access all stop within walking distance of the gate.

From a 140-Berth Yacht Basin to an Olympic Venue

The marina that hosted the 2016 Games was not the marina that existed before it. BR Marinas put 70 million reais, about 17.1 million euro at the time, into a full rebuild ahead of the Olympics, a figure reported both by the IOC's own account of the project and by Brazilian trade coverage of the April 2016 reopening. The number of wet berths went from 140 to 415 and dry-stack storage went from 70 to 240, with new piers, new sewage, electrical and water systems and a gastronomic hub of four restaurants and a delicatessen built where a plainer yacht basin had stood.

The reopened marina then hosted sailing at the 2016 Summer Olympics from 7 to 19 August and the 2016 Summer Paralympics from 12 to 17 September, 380 Olympic competitors from 68 nations racing 10 events on Guanabara Bay, the first time an Olympic sailing venue had sat inside the host city itself since Athens in 2004. The waterfront boardwalk that used to be fenced off for boat owners only was opened to the public as part of the same project, folding the marina into the park instead of walling it off from it.

A Brazilian Federal Regional Court annulled Marina da Gloria's operating concession in February 2020 and the Uniao fined the operator 19.4 million reais in 2022 for building on public land without authorization. The marina hosted a boat show, an art fair, a music festival and a Carnival party in 2026 anyway.

The Water the Sailors Actually Raced In

The renovation fixed the piers, not the bay. Associated Press-commissioned virology testing in the run-up to the Games found consistently high levels of viruses capable of causing stomach and respiratory illness in Guanabara Bay, with readings taken at Marina da Gloria itself higher in June 2016 than they had been in March 2015 despite clean-up efforts. Belgian sailor Evi Van Acker developed a severe intestinal infection after training there in July 2016, reported at the time as the first Olympic competitor known to have fallen ill from the bay's water.

A decade on, the picture is mixed rather than fixed. State environmental agency INEA's own balneability monitoring shows Flamengo beach, immediately next to the marina, reaching roughly 80 percent proper-for-bathing readings across 2024, close to Ipanema's 86 percent, and other long-dead beaches like Botafogo now testing swimmable with some regularity. But most of the 46 monitoring points across the wider bay watershed remain stagnant, and the dry-weather sewage interceptors meant to stop raw sewage reaching the bay were still awaiting regulatory approval as of 2026, with concessionaire Aguas do Rio having invested only about 122 million reais of a promised 2.7 billion by late 2024, roughly 5 percent.

Who Actually Owns This Marina

The concession behind Marina da Gloria has changed hands three times and been fought over in court for most of three decades. Rio's city government granted it in 1995 and 1996 to Empresa Brasileira de Terraplanagem e Engenharia, which ran it through a subsidiary called Marina da Cidade; a 2006 extension gave the concessionaire 30 more years, and in 2009 the rights passed to Eike Batista's MGX. A 2013 federal court ruling found MGX had locked gates and built a pier extension blocking public access to the water inside a protected heritage park, and ordered it removed under a 50,000-reais-a-day fine.

Eike Batista sold the concession to BR Marinas in 2015, a transfer the federal government's Uniao says the city made without the public bidding Brazilian law requires for public land. BR Marinas maintains the concession runs to 2036 and says it has invested 76 to 80 million reais since taking over; a lower court ordered the city to reassume management in October 2018, BR Marinas appealed, and the Federal Regional Court's 8th panel annulled the concession contract outright in February 2020. Appeals to the Superior Court of Justice and Supreme Federal Court were still pending when the Uniao's property agency separately fined BR Marinas 19.4 million reais in 2022 for building without authorization on the federal land underneath the site. As of 2026 BR Marinas, branded on site as Axia Marina da Gloria, still runs it.

What a Berth Actually Costs

No current, published rate card for Marina da Gloria's wet berths turned up anywhere Yotters looked, on the operator's own site or any third-party listing. The most recent official figure on record is a 2014 FIFA World Cup berthing circular, which set 15 reais per foot per day for stays up to 20 days and 13 reais per foot per day beyond that, with a seven-day minimum and a non-refundable 20 percent deposit; whatever the current rate is, it is quoted directly by the office rather than printed anywhere a visiting owner can check in advance.

Cruiser reviews on Navily give the closest thing to a current number. Carlos, sailing the 43-foot LaLinda, reported paying 150 US dollars a day in January 2025; Jean-Francois, aboard the 14.7-metre IKESSO, logged 18 reais per foot per day in October 2024 and called the marina overpriced. Every reviewer who mentions cost uses the same word. That matches a specific allegation raised in the 2018 court case by lawyer and former city councillor Sonia Rabello, who told the court Marina da Gloria charges roughly three times what a comparable public marina would, evidence of what she argued was a facility that had drifted from public nautical amenity into a premium commercial operation.

Getting In, and Getting a Slip

The approach is straightforward by Rio standards: leave Laje Island to port and head northwest toward the Gloria jetties, where three pontoons are set aside for casual visitors and the marina monitors VHF channel 68, call sign Echo 37, historically watched roughly 8am to 7pm. Cruiser reviews from 2024 report the office not answering the radio and staff with limited English, so a phone call ahead or a direct approach to the office on arrival, papers and captain's passport in hand, is the more reliable plan than expecting a hail to be picked up.

Dry storage runs through a forklift system rated to lift boats up to 46 feet and 17 tons, and the maximum draught is consistently given as 5 metres across independent listings, a genuine point of agreement. The berth counts around it are not: BR Marinas' own current marketing describes 300 wet berths taking vessels up to 260 feet (79 metres) alongside 200 dry-stack spaces, while Navily's own marina profile for the same address gives 240 berths and a 61-metre maximum length, well short of 79 metres. Neither figure matches the 415 wet berths reported at the 2016 reopening, and nothing Yotters found reconciles any of the three.

Fuel, Power and What Is Actually on the Dock

The services list reads better than the 2014 circular that preceded it, which offered no dock power at all and required land generators on request. Navily's current marina profile lists electricity, water, showers, restrooms and WiFi as standard, and cruiser reviews confirm a fuel dock operating since 5 May 2023 and a self-service laundry added the same year, both genuine upgrades on what was there for the Olympics.

The 2016 renovation's gastronomic hub, four restaurants and a delicatessen built into the rebuilt piers, still anchors the dockside; Axia Marina da Gloria's own event materials describe a covered pavilion of roughly 5,000 square metres and an open Green Esplanade of almost 12,000 square metres built onto the same footprint, space that now does double duty as marina frontage and festival ground. One safety note worth having in hand: Brazilian Navy maritime safety officers have run documented fire-extinguisher and equipment inspections on tour boats at the marina, a routine check on the excursion fleet rather than anything specific to visiting yachts, but a sign of the level of oversight the marina's own passenger-boat operations sit under.

A Marina That Doubles as Rio's Biggest Stage

In 2026 alone Marina da Gloria hosted Universo Spanta in January, a Carnival warm-up party across four stages headlined by Ivete Sangalo, Ana Castela and Ludmilla, followed by the 27th Rio Boat Show from 11 to 19 April, Latin America's largest outdoor nautical show, which put more than 100 boats on display including five named megayachts on the water: a Ferretti Yachts 1000, an Azimut Grande 25 Metri, a Schaefer 770, a Sanlorenzo SD90 and a Princess X80.

The Festival de Inverno Rio music festival took the site from 24 July to 2 August for its ninth edition, and ArtRio, the contemporary art fair, closed its 16th edition there on 20 September with more than 80 galleries and an estimated 50,000 visitors, a run organizers put at 67.7 million reais of economic impact for the city. The marina also hosted the official draw for FIFA's 2014 World Cup qualification, so the pattern of national events landing on this particular stretch of water predates the Olympics by two years.

What Is Wrong With It

The single biggest problem is not a service gap, it is a legal one: the company running the marina lost its right to do so in federal court in February 2020 and was fined 19.4 million reais in 2022 for building on public land without authorization, and it is still running the marina in 2026 while its appeals sit unresolved. Nobody advertising a season berth here mentions that, and an owner signing a contract with BR Marinas today is signing with an operator whose underlying right to the site a Brazilian court has already thrown out once.

The published numbers do not agree with each other. BR Marinas' own marketing gives 300 wet berths up to 79 metres; Navily's own marina profile for the same marina gives 240 berths and a 61-metre limit; the 2016 Olympic renovation was reported at 415 wet berths. No current rate card exists anywhere Yotters could find, cruiser reviews from 2024 report VHF 68 going unanswered and staff with limited English, and the water itself, a decade after the Olympic clean-up promises, still fails balneability testing across most of the bay even as the beach directly beside the marina has genuinely improved. Almost all of the marina's 415 public reviews are about the restaurants, the park and the events, not about berthing a boat, which means an owner has to go looking specifically, as Yotters did on Navily, to find anyone reviewing the thing they actually came to write about.

An Land, Anfahrt und Buchung

Getting thereMarina da Gloria sits inside Parque do Flamengo (the Aterro do Flamengo) at Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, Gloria, in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone, within a few minutes by road of Santos Dumont Airport and downtown, and reachable by metro, VLT tram and city bus routes that serve the park. No water-taxi or ferry service to the marina itself is published.
Arriving by seaLeave Laje Island to port and head northwest toward the Gloria jetties. The marina monitors VHF channel 68, call sign Echo 37, historically watched roughly 8am to 7pm, but 2024 cruiser reviews report the office not answering the radio; calling or emailing ahead, then going straight to the marina office on arrival with the vessel's papers and the captain's passport, is the more reliable approach.
How you actually reserve a berthNo online booking system or published tariff exists. BR Marinas quotes berths directly through its office; casual visitors can use one of three pontoons set aside for them near the Gloria jetties on a first-come basis.
What a berth costsNo current official rate card is published. The last officially circulated figure, from a 2014 FIFA World Cup berthing notice, was 15 reais per foot per day for stays up to 20 days and 13 reais per foot per day beyond that, seven-day minimum, 20 percent non-refundable deposit. Cruiser reviews from 2024 and 2025 report paying roughly 150 US dollars a day for a 43-foot sailboat and 18 reais per foot per day for a 14.7-metre sailboat respectively, and a 2018 court filing alleged the marina charges about three times a comparable public marina's rate.
Fuel, power and what is extraA fuel dock has operated since 5 May 2023 and a self-service laundry was added the same year. Electricity, water, showers, restrooms and WiFi are listed as standard by Navily's marina profile, a real upgrade on the 2014-era marina, which had no dock power and supplied generators only on request.
Where to eat, and after darkThe 2016 renovation built a dockside gastronomic hub of four restaurants and a delicatessen directly into the rebuilt piers. The wider Axia Marina da Gloria complex adds a roughly 5,000 square metre covered pavilion and a nearly 12,000 square metre open Green Esplanade that hosts concerts, art fairs and festivals through the year.
The fixed dates that fill it2026 alone brought Universo Spanta, a four-stage Carnival warm-up party, in January; the 27th Rio Boat Show, over 100 boats including five named megayachts, from 11 to 19 April; the Festival de Inverno Rio music festival from 24 July to 2 August; and ArtRio, closing 20 September with roughly 50,000 visitors.
Legal status, worth knowing before you sign anythingA Federal Regional Court annulled operator BR Marinas' concession contract in February 2020 over the city's failure to hold a public bid in 2015; appeals to Brazil's Superior Court of Justice and Supreme Federal Court remain unresolved, and the Uniao's federal property agency separately fined BR Marinas 19.4 million reais in 2022 for unauthorized construction on the underlying federal land. BR Marinas continues to operate the marina as of 2026.
What is NOT publishedNo current wet-berth tariff. No resolution of the gap between BR Marinas' own marketed 300 wet berths up to 79 metres and Navily's listed 240 berths and 61-metre limit, against the 415 wet berths reported at the 2016 reopening. No public statement from BR Marinas addressing the 2020 court annulment of its concession or the 2022 federal fine.

Stärken

  • A genuine Olympic pedigree inside the city itselfMarina da Gloria hosted sailing at the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, the first Olympic sailing venue sited inside the host city since Athens 2004, and the 415-berth, 240-dry-stack rebuild that made that possible is real infrastructure, not a temporary overlay.
  • A setting few marinas anywhere can matchDirect views of Sugarloaf Mountain and Corcovado from the pontoons, inside a Burle Marx-landscaped park, minutes from downtown Rio and Santos Dumont Airport.
  • Real, recent service upgradesA fuel dock (since May 2023) and self-service laundry (since 2023) plus standard electricity, water, showers and WiFi replaced a 2014-era marina that had no dock power at all.
  • A 5-metre draught confirmed by independent sourcesNavily's marina profile, a 2014 FIFA World Cup berthing circular and a superyacht marina directory all independently agree on a 5-metre maximum draught, one of the few hard numbers here that is not in dispute.
  • The busiest events calendar of any marina on this listUniverso Spanta, the Rio Boat Show, the Festival de Inverno Rio and ArtRio all used the site in 2026, putting a marina berth at the physical center of Rio's cultural year rather than on its edge.

Worauf zu achten ist

  • The operator's concession was annulled by a federal court in 2020A Federal Regional Court found the 2015 transfer to BR Marinas skipped the public bidding Brazilian law requires and voided the contract; appeals remain unresolved and BR Marinas keeps operating the marina regardless, a real legal cloud over any season contract signed today.
  • The Uniao fined the operator 19.4 million reais in 2022Brazil's federal property agency found unauthorized construction on the federal land beneath the marina, on top of the concession dispute, and neither issue is disclosed anywhere in the marina's own marketing.
  • Published berth counts contradict each otherBR Marinas' own current marketing claims 300 wet berths up to 79 metres, Navily's own marina profile for the same address gives 240 berths and a 61-metre limit, and the 2016 Olympic reopening was reported at 415 wet berths. No source reconciles any of the three.
  • No published rate card, and reviewers call it overpricedThe last official tariff on record is from 2014. Current cruiser reviews report paying roughly 150 US dollars a day for a 43-foot boat or 18 reais per foot per day, and a 2018 court filing alleged rates about three times a comparable public marina.
  • The bay is still not clean, and the radio often goes unansweredMost of Guanabara Bay's 46 water-quality monitoring points remain stagnant a decade after the Olympic clean-up promises, and 2024 cruiser reviews report VHF 68 going unanswered and marina staff with limited English.

Für wen: An owner of a 40 to 60 metre motoryacht who wants a slip at the physical center of Rio's cultural calendar, expects to pay tourist-city day rates with no published tariff to check them against and is comfortable that the operator's own right to run the marina has been through federal court and lost, not a cruising sailor after a quiet, cheap, responsive-on-the-radio stopover with clean water alongside the boat.
