Volvo Penta's hybrid pod: 7nm of silence for 3 tonnes of battery

The numbers the announcement left out
The system is built around the D13, a 12.8 litre six cylinder diesel rated between 700 and 1,000hp depending on tune, with a 160kW electric motor and generator between the engine and the forward facing pod. Battery storage is lithium iron phosphate in two sizes, 147kWh or 221kWh on a twin installation, on a 650 volt system. Volvo Penta is offering it across the IPS900 to IPS1350 range, which covers most of the market between roughly 20 and 30 metres. It runs on HVO100 renewable diesel and meets IMO III and EPA Tier 3.
None of that was public in May, when the announcement gave three operating modes and a launch window later in 2026 and left the performance to the imagination. What changed this week is that Motor Boat & Yachting ran the system on a 68 foot aluminium trials boat of 42 tonnes and published measured figures. The result is a spec sheet an owner can price against a conventional installation.
What seven miles of silence actually buys
In pure electric mode the boat will do 11 knots for about 40 minutes before the batteries are flat, which works out at roughly seven nautical miles. Ease off to 8 knots and the same pack lasts over two hours and covers 16 miles. Those are small numbers next to a diesel range, and they are not meant to compete with one. They are the numbers for the last mile into a berth and the approach to an anchorage.
The figure that matters more sits at anchor rather than under way. Azimut quotes up to 12 hours of hotel load in its Hotel Mode, and the trial measured over 11 hours with no diesel running. On a 25 metre boat the generator sits close enough to the guest cabins that everybody aboard knows when it cycles. Eleven hours covers a night at anchor and a long lunch stop, which is most of the usage pattern owners in this size band actually have.
The fuel case, and the weight it costs
Run in Cross Over mode at 10 knots the trials boat burned 4.4 litres per nautical mile, around 30 per cent less than the same hull on conventional power. Push it into hybrid electric and it holds 18 knots at 1,900rpm at 13.7 litres a mile, with 28 knots flat out. Recharging is quicker than the range figures suggest: about 40 minutes in generator mode at anchor, one to two hours cruising at 15 knots. Shore charging is rated at 43kW on AC and 215kW on DC.
The cost of all of it is about three tonnes over a standard IPS1350 installation. On a 42 tonne trials boat that is seven per cent of displacement, and it has to go somewhere. Weight low and central is not a problem in itself, and on some hulls the batteries improve the ride. The question is what the builder gave up to find the volume, because machinery space on a boat this size already competes with the tender garage.
Who has committed so far
Azimut got there first. The Seadeck 7 appeared at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2024 as the first yacht to put a hybrid electric package on Volvo Penta IPS, running twin D13 IPS1350 Hybrids and offering four modes: pure electric, hybrid standard, hybrid boost and hotel. Two years of owners running that boat is why the trial figures look settled rather than provisional. Azimut has since taken the platform up the range, with the 26 metre Seadeck 9 heading to Cannes this season.
Sanlorenzo has committed the D13 IPS Hybrid to SHE, its retro styled motor yacht, which puts a second Italian builder of scale behind the system before the general launch. That matters for the option's survival. A propulsion package with one customer is a project; two builders shipping hulls make it a product line, and the difference shows up years later in whether a yard will still service it.
What to ask before you sign
Three questions are worth putting to a builder now rather than at handover. Ask where the battery pack sits and what came out to make room, with the general arrangement in front of you. Ask what the warranty covers, what the service life is in cycles, and what a replacement pack costs today, because that sets the floor under the boat's value in year ten. Ask whether the yard's service network is trained on the high voltage side, or whether every fault goes back to a Volvo dealer.
The charging assumption is the one most likely to disappoint. Forty minutes at anchor in generator mode is a diesel running, which is the thing the system was bought to avoid, and 43kW of AC shore charging is more than many Mediterranean berths can deliver. An owner planning to arrive on shore power and leave with a full pack should check the supply at the marinas actually used.
