Marina Coral (Ensenada, Mexico)

Marina Coral sits inside the Hotel Coral & Marina resort on the northern shore of Ensenada's Todos Santos Bay, its 353 slips tucked behind a reinforced breakwater a 90-minute drive south of the US border. Mexican harbormasters, including Marina Coral's own Fito Espinoza, tell Baja-bound cruisers to clear customs here rather than wait for Cabo, and the resort keeps an immigration and customs office on site to do it. What it does not have is an online booking system: the marina publishes a per-foot daily rate card, unusually, but the only way to actually reserve a slip is a request-for-proposal form asking your boat's length, draft and beam.

Where Marina Coral Actually Sits

Marina Coral occupies the northern shore of Todos Santos Bay, built into the Hotel Coral & Marina resort at Km 103 on the Tijuana-Ensenada toll road, a few kilometers short of downtown Ensenada rather than inside it. Dockwalk's marina directory places it at 31 51'45.7" N, 116 39'42.3" W; Wikipedia's entry for the Port of Ensenada gives the commercial port's own charted position as 31 51'03" N, 116 37'35" W, about two and a half kilometers to the southeast, which lines up with the way every travel source describes Marina Coral: on the northern end of the port, separate from the container cranes and cruise terminal that sit closer to the old town.

That separation is deliberate. The resort's own aerial photography shows a salmon-colored hotel and condominium tower standing directly over its own breakwater-protected basin, with the hillside colonias of Ensenada climbing the slope behind it and the commercial port's cranes visible only as a distant backdrop from a guest balcony. A boat tied up here is walking distance from a hotel pool deck, not from the fish markets and chandleries of the working waterfront, which is either the whole point or the opposite of what you want depending on why you are cruising this stretch of Baja.

The Slips, the Breakwater and What Actually Fits

Marina Coral carries 353 slips behind a reinforced, hurricane-protected breakwater, a figure that Hotel Coral's own site, the Baja Ha-Ha marina directory and the cruiser network Ocean Posse all independently repeat: 350 concrete slips sized 30 to 65 feet, plus a run of end ties for boats from 64 up to 109 feet. That makes it the largest of Ensenada's three marinas by a wide margin; Baja Naval downtown runs a 50-slip boatyard for 33 to 80-foot boats, and Cruiseport Village, the mid-market option nearer the cruise terminal, carries 191 slips at 36 to 38 feet plus six end ties to 135 feet and a 510-foot megayacht berth.

Where the published numbers get thinner is draft and beam. Dockwalk's own directory lists a maximum length of 40.9 meters (134 feet), a maximum beam of 10 meters and a maximum draft of 3 meters, figures that would matter enormously to anyone bringing in a boat near the upper end of the slip range, and Yotters could not find them repeated on Hotel Coral's own site or on any other independent listing. A boat drawing anywhere near 3 meters should treat that number as a starting point for a phone call, not a guarantee.

Hotel Coral's own website publishes a per-foot daily rate for every slip class from 30 to 109 feet. The only way to actually book one, on that same site, is a request-for-proposal form that asks your vessel's length, draft and beam and promises someone will get back to you.

Why Cruisers Clear In Here Rather Than Wait for Cabo

Marina Coral keeps a Mexican Immigration and Customs office on site, and its own harbormaster has been telling Baja-bound cruisers for years to use it. Latitude 38, the sailing publication that organizes the annual Baja Ha-Ha rally, reported that Fito Espinoza of Marina Coral was among the Mexican harbormasters who advised the 2020 fleet to complete their paperwork in Ensenada rather than push on to Cabo San Lucas, where officials had begun requiring time-consuming health clearances and where at least one ship's agent had declined to process a fleet the size of the Ha-Ha's.

The mechanics of what gets processed are fairly consistent across independent accounts, even where the marina differs. A Temporary Import Permit for the vessel, issued through Banjercito, is required for any foreign-flagged boat and a separate FMM tourist permit is required per person aboard; the cruising-clearance site Sea.net describes the TIP as effectively a refundable deposit tied to the boat's value rather than a flat fee, while other current sources quote a flat charge of roughly 50 to 90 US dollars depending on the peso rate, so a cruiser should expect to confirm the exact mechanic at the window rather than budget from any one number online.

The Baja Ha-Ha and the Run South from San Diego

Marina Coral sits on the single most-used cruising route on North America's Pacific coast, the run south from San Diego that the annual Baja Ha-Ha rally has followed since 1994. The 2026 edition, the 32nd, is scheduled to run from 2 to 14 November, San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, with registration for the year closing on 2 September; Ensenada, some 60 nautical miles down the coast, is the fleet's first realistic overnight and the place most boats choose to finish their Mexican paperwork rather than carry it further south.

Marina Coral is one of two marinas the rally's own resource page lists for the Ensenada stop, alongside Cruiseport Village nearer the cruise terminal; the Ha-Ha's own materials do not name an official host marina for the fleet, and individual boats choose between the two based on price, on wanting a hotel pool at the end of the dock, or on wanting to be closer to the town's restaurants and chandleries instead.

What a Slip Costs, and How You Actually Book One

Hotel Coral's own site publishes a genuine per-foot daily rate, something few Mexican marinas put in writing at all: 2.50 US dollars a day for a 30-foot slip, rising through the 3.40 to 3.50 dollar range for 35 to 50-footers, 4.50 dollars for 55 to 65-footers and 4.80 dollars for an end tie from 64 up to 109 feet, with separate short and long-term rates available on request. On a 40-foot boat that prices a transient night at roughly 140 dollars, before power, water or any of the extras the marina bills separately.

What that published rate card does not give you is a way to actually reserve the slip online. The booking path on Hotel Coral's own marina pages is a request-for-proposal form: arrival and departure dates, owner contact details, and the vessel's length overall, draft, beam and electrical needs, with no live availability calendar and no price quoted back on the page itself. For a boat near the top of the size range, or for any multi-month contract, the day-rate card is really a starting point for a conversation rather than a number you can book against.

Fuel, Security and Life on the Dock

Marina Coral operates the only fuel dock in Ensenada selling filtered diesel and gasoline, according to the operator, with a free pump-out service thrown in and hull cleaning available at 1.55 to 1.72 dollars a foot for boats that want it done dockside rather than hauled. Every berth carries 30 or 50-amp shore power, water, cable television and Wi-Fi, and the marina runs 24-hour security with surveillance cameras and electronic dock access, backed by a complimentary shuttle that runs guests and crew up to the hotel itself.

For a crew planning to leave the boat and go ashore, that security picture matters more than it might at a marina with less to protect. Rick D, a cruiser posting on Sailboat Owners Forums, specifically credited the surrounding streets as well patrolled and said he had never had a problem in Ensenada working from Hotel Coral as a base, a claim that lines up with the marina's own emphasis on gated, camera-covered docks rather than an open commercial waterfront.

What Owners and Cruisers Who Have Actually Stayed Here Say

The clearest independent word of mouth on Marina Coral comes from a Sailboat Owners Forums thread on cruising to Ensenada, and it splits along predictable lines. Rick D wrote plainly that his preference is to stay at Hotel Coral & Marina: it's where he always stays, it sits about two miles from town so there is less noise, it has a restaurant with a well-known brunch, guests can use the gym, jacuzzi and pool, staff can handle check-in and check-out for you and the fuel dock runs at roughly half US prices. Another poster, timvg, seconded the recommendation outright, calling the pool, spa and dining room, wine included, all great and worth doing.

A third poster, zeehag, offered the dissenting view that matters for balance: corporate-run facilities like Coral, in that poster's words, cater to the heavily monied souls, and pointed budget-conscious cruisers toward alternatives such as Botes Juanitos, quoted at around 175 dollars a week versus Coral's considerably higher rates, for what the poster called the native experience instead. Both views describe the same marina accurately: a full-service resort berth built for comfort and price, not a bare-bones dock for cruisers counting pesos.

The Resort, the Wine Country and the Fixed Dates

The marina shares its grounds with a 147-room resort that gives a visiting crew genuine reasons to stay aboard a few extra nights: three pools, a spa built around marine-themed treatments, tennis and paddle courts and two restaurants, with the Baja wine country of the Guadalupe Valley a short drive inland and San Miguel Beach and downtown Ensenada each about ten minutes away by the marina's own account. Jesse Atkinson, who runs Ensenada Fishing Charters out of the area and was quoted in a feature for boating title The Log, said he prefers the hotel for his own downtime too, singling out the jacuzzis and steam room, a small but genuine data point that local sportfishing operators use the resort themselves between charters.

One fixed date is worth planning around. The 26th annual Festival de las Conchas y el Vino Nuevo, a seafood-and-new-wine festival, was held on Hotel Coral's own Gran Terraza on 19 April 2026, drawing roughly 80 wineries from Baja California's valleys and more than 160 newly released wines, according to both Baja California Travel's events listing and the Tijuana Eventos coverage of the same edition; a boat timed to be on the dock that weekend gets the festival within a short walk rather than a drive into town.

What Is Wrong With It

The single most consequential number for a boat near the top of the marina's own size range, maximum draft, comes from exactly one source: Dockwalk's directory entry, which gives 3 meters against a stated maximum length of 40.9 meters. Neither Hotel Coral's own site nor the Baja Ha-Ha or Ocean Posse listings repeat a draft figure at all, so a deep-draft sailboat or motoryacht near the 109-foot end-tie limit has no independently confirmed number to plan an approach against and should get soundings directly from the marina rather than trust a single directory.

The reservation process is the other honest gap. A marina that goes to the trouble of publishing a per-foot daily rate card, genuinely unusual transparency for a Mexican marina, still makes you fill out a request-for-proposal form and wait for a reply rather than book online, and neither a real-time availability calendar nor a load-in price for a multi-month seasonal contract is published anywhere. Layer on the Temporary Import Permit, whose cost different current sources describe as anywhere from a flat 50 dollars to a refundable deposit that scales with the boat's value, and a first-time visitor arrives with a good general sense of the marina and no precise number for either the slip or the paperwork until someone on staff tells them directly.

على البر والوصول والحجز

Getting thereMarina Coral sits at Km 103 on the Carretera Tijuana-Ensenada, the coastal toll road, in the Zona Playitas district a few kilometers north of downtown Ensenada. By road it is about 90 minutes or 75 miles south of the US border at San Ysidro/Tijuana, per Hotel Coral's own account, with Ensenada's own small airport roughly 30 minutes away and San Diego's airport, the practical choice for most international arrivals, a further hour or so north across the border.
Arriving by sea and hailing the marinaMarina Coral answers on VHF channel 71, a figure confirmed independently by Dockwalk's directory, the Baja Ha-Ha marina resource page and the cruiser network Ocean Posse. The marina sits roughly 60 nautical miles south of San Diego by sea and about two and a half kilometers northwest of the Port of Ensenada's own charted position, behind its own dedicated breakwater rather than inside the commercial harbor.
How you actually reserve a berthHotel Coral's marina pages route every enquiry through a request-for-proposal form: arrival and departure dates, owner contact details, and the vessel's name, type, length overall, draft, beam and electrical needs, with a promise that staff will respond. There is no live availability calendar and no instant online booking, a contrast with the marina's own published day-rate card for shorter transient stays. Phone +52 (646) 175-0050 or the US toll-free 1-866-302-0066, or email [email protected].
What a berth costsPublished day rates run 2.50 USD/ft for a 30ft slip, 3.40-3.50 USD/ft for 35-50ft, 4.50 USD/ft for 55-65ft and 4.80 USD/ft for a 64-109ft end tie, with separate short and long-term rates available on request but not published. Hull cleaning runs 1.55-1.72 USD per foot. No source, including the operator, publishes a seasonal or annual contract rate; that pricing is quoted only through the RFP process.
Fuel, power and what is includedThe marina operates the only fuel dock in Ensenada selling filtered diesel and gasoline, per the operator, with free pump-out included. Every slip carries 30 or 50-amp shore power, potable water, cable TV and Wi-Fi; a complimentary shuttle runs between the docks and the hotel building. Cruiser Rick D, posting on Sailboat Owners Forums, put the fuel price at roughly half US levels, though Yotters found no independently published per-gallon figure to verify that against.
Clearing a foreign yacht into Mexico hereMarina Coral keeps an on-site Mexican Immigration and Customs office, according to both the operator and a feature in boating title The Log, so a vessel can complete its entry paperwork without leaving the property. A Temporary Import Permit through Banjercito and an FMM tourist permit per person are both required; current sources disagree on whether the TIP is a flat charge of roughly 50 to 90 US dollars or a refundable deposit scaled to the vessel's value, so confirming the exact mechanic and amount at the window is the safer plan than budgeting from any single online figure.
The other two Ensenada marinas, for comparisonBaja Naval, downtown on Av. de la Marina, is a 50-slip boatyard and marina for 33 to 80-foot boats, VHF channels 77 and 16. Cruiseport Village (ECV), nearer the cruise terminal, carries 191 slips at 36-38 feet plus six end ties to 135 feet and a 510-foot megayacht berth, VHF channel 12. Both figures are per the Baja Ha-Ha rally's own marina directory.
Where to eat and what is next doorThe resort's own two restaurants and pool bar sit on the same grounds as the marina, and Hotel Coral's marketing puts San Miguel Beach and downtown Ensenada each within about ten minutes by car. The Guadalupe Valley wine region, Baja California's best-known wine country, is a short drive inland and is the subject of the resort's own vineyard-tour package.
The fixed dates that fill itThe Baja Ha-Ha rally runs San Diego to Cabo San Lucas 2-14 November 2026 (32nd edition), with Ensenada as an early stop for clearance; 2026 registration closed 2 September. The 26th annual Festival de las Conchas y el Vino Nuevo, roughly 80 Baja wineries and 160-plus new-release wines, was held on Hotel Coral's Gran Terraza on 19 April 2026, confirmed by Baja California Travel and Tijuana Eventos.
What is NOT publishedMaximum draft (3m) and beam (10m) come from a single source, Dockwalk's directory, and are not repeated by the operator or by the Baja Ha-Ha or Ocean Posse listings. No live availability calendar, no online booking, and no published seasonal or annual contract rate exist anywhere Yotters could find; a slip request goes through an RFP form with a manual reply. The exact Temporary Import Permit fee and mechanism (flat fee versus refundable deposit) is reported inconsistently across current sources.

  • An on-site immigration and customs office, and the harbormaster's own advice to use itMarina Coral keeps a Mexican Immigration and Customs office on site, and its harbormaster Fito Espinoza was named by Latitude 38 among the officials advising Baja Ha-Ha cruisers to clear in at Ensenada rather than wait for a slower, more complicated process in Cabo San Lucas.
  • The largest, most protected marina in Ensenada by a wide margin353 slips behind a reinforced breakwater dwarf Baja Naval's 50 slips downtown and roughly double Cruiseport Village's 191, a figure confirmed independently by the operator, the Baja Ha-Ha marina directory and Ocean Posse.
  • The only fuel dock in Ensenada, at roughly half US pricesFiltered diesel and gasoline with free pump-out are available nowhere else in the harbor, per the operator, and a named cruiser on Sailboat Owners Forums put the price at about half what the same fuel costs in the US.
  • A published per-foot day-rate card, genuinely unusual for a Mexican marinaHotel Coral's own site prices every slip class from 30 to 109 feet by the day, a level of transparency that neither Baja Naval nor Cruiseport Village match in what either publishes online.
  • Independent cruisers who have actually stayed there recommend it without promptingTwo named posters on Sailboat Owners Forums, Rick D and timvg, both endorsed Hotel Coral & Marina unprompted in a thread about cruising to Ensenada, citing the pool, spa, dining room and staff help with check-in and check-out.

  • No online booking and no published contract rateEvery reservation, regardless of boat size or length of stay, goes through a request-for-proposal form asking length, draft and beam, with a promised reply rather than a live availability calendar or an instant price.
  • Maximum draft and beam are single-sourcedDockwalk's directory gives a maximum draft of 3 meters and beam of 10 meters against a 40.9-meter maximum length, and no other source, including the operator itself, repeats those numbers.
  • It is priced, and positioned, well above the budget end of Ensenada cruisingA dissenting cruiser on Sailboat Owners Forums, zeehag, described corporate-run marinas like Coral as catering to heavily monied clientele and pointed budget cruisers toward alternatives running a fraction of the cost.
  • The Temporary Import Permit's cost and mechanism are reported inconsistentlyCurrent sources describe the same federal permit as either a flat fee of roughly 50 to 90 US dollars or a refundable deposit scaled to the vessel's value, so a first-time visitor cannot budget precisely from any single online source before arriving.
  • Coordinates are single-sourced and the marina sits apart from the working portThe only published coordinate for the marina itself comes from Dockwalk's directory; a crew wanting chandlery, haul-out or working-waterfront services will find those clustered downtown near Baja Naval instead, a real drive or taxi from the resort.
