Marina de Lisboa (Portugal)

Marina de Lisboa's Doca de Alcantara basin sits about a mile upstream of the Ponte 25 de Abril, on the Tagus's north bank, inside the city rather than beside it. It is run by APL, the Port of Lisbon authority, which manages Alcantara together with three sister docks, Belem, Bom Sucesso and Santo Amaro, under a single registered brand, Marina de Lisboa and one shared 2026 tariff. Alcantara itself, on the operator's own numbers, takes about 376 boats to 20 metres, though a Portuguese-language visitor guide citing the same operator gives 427 boats over 6 metres plus 15 smaller ones, and neither this page nor Yotters could reconcile the two. What Alcantara actually offers is the cheapest, most central berth in Lisbon: a train station five minutes' walk away puts you in Cais do Sodre in four minutes, water and electricity are folded into the published rate and a working container terminal, not a beach, is the view. A 2017 eyewitness account found no fuel and no craning on site, despite both being priced on the shared tariff and Yotters found no newer source confirming whether that has changed.

Alcantara, Inside Four Docks Called One Marina

APL, the Port of Lisbon authority, prints Marina de Lisboa as a registered brand across its tariff sheets, and the brand covers four physically separate basins strung along the north bank between the bridge and Belem: Alcantara nearest the bridge, then Santo Amaro immediately beside it, then Bom Sucesso and Belem further downstream near the Belem Tower. APL's own 2026 tariff document lists a contact address, phone number and GPS position for each of the four separately and Alcantara's is Doca de Alcantara, 1399-012 Lisboa, GPS 38 42'N 09 12'W, which PredictWind independently pins to 38.70232N 9.16802W, close enough to count as the same point. The older name for this specific basin, printed by APL itself alongside Alcantara on the same tariff sheet, is Doca do Espanhol.

The distinction matters because online sources routinely blur it. Wikimedia Commons runs a single umbrella category for Marina de Lisboa that groups all four docks together without saying which photograph belongs to which, and at least one image search hit for the same umbrella term geolocates to coordinates over 4 km from Alcantara, close to Belem instead. A buyer or skipper researching this marina online should check which of the four basins a given photograph, review or price actually refers to before relying on it; Yotters did the same check for the photographs on this page and kept only frames independently categorised and geolocated to Alcantara itself, several of them from a Tall Ships Races Lisboa call in 2023.

The Approach, The Bridge And A River That Moves

Doca de Alcantara is the first of the Lisbon recreational docks a yacht coming upriver reaches, about a mile past the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge, with the entrance on the north shore hidden behind a commercial wharf, according to the World Cruising and Sailing Wiki, which also notes the harbour has been dredged to around 7.2 metres, though a separate summary of the same entry gives 7.0 metres as the maximum draft rather than the dredged depth. APL itself publishes no depth figure at all for Alcantara. VHF is unsettled between sources in the way it often is on this coast: Noonsite and the cruising site Sail the Net both give channel 12, while PredictWind independently gives channel 9 and a third aggregated source adds channel 68 for calling the dock operator directly, with 12 or 74 for Lisbon Port Control. Call 12 first.

A pedestrian or opening bridge spans the entrance itself and is worked on request or on a schedule, depending on which source is read; treat it as a request-to-open structure and hail well ahead. Inside the dock and at the entrance, APL's own operating regulation for the recreational docks caps speed at three knots or any speed that raises a wash, the identical limit Marina de Cascais applies on the coast outside. The wider Tagus at this point is a working tidal river rather than a sheltered pond: the estuary runs semidiurnal tides with spring ranges around 3.2 to 3.6 metres measured at central Lisbon, and the same stretch of river past Belem, Santo Amaro and Alcantara has been described elsewhere as carrying 4 to 5 knots of spring tidal stream through the dock entrances. Yotters found that figure only once, tied to the group of docks rather than to Alcantara's entrance specifically, and could not independently confirm it to a second source, so treat it as directional rather than exact and time an arrival against slack water if the boat is underpowered.

Getting A Berth: Waiting Lists, Reservations And The Paperwork

APL's regulation for the recreational docks splits berthing into two regimes, and which one applies changes how hard it is to get in. Temporary parking, defined as 14 days or fewer, covers daily, weekly and fortnightly stays and is not subject to any waiting list, with renewal simply dependent on a space being free. Permanent parking, 30 days or more, covers monthly, six-monthly and annual berths, is subject to a waiting list and renews automatically once assigned. A client can request a 30-day-ahead reservation and amend it up to five days before the stated date without penalty; change it later than that and the daily rate is charged from the requested date until the boat actually occupies the berth, under Article 11 of the regulation.

Assignment itself requires a form at the dock's own service counter, plus, for the owner or their legal representative, an identity document, tax number, proof of address for billing and a mobile number; for the boat, a valid survey document and proof of civil liability insurance at the legally established minimum, no figure stated. Missing paperwork simply defaults the client to the daily rate until it is supplied. A berth right is personal to the named owner and boat and cannot be used by a different boat, even one owned by the same person, without APL's prior authorisation and selling the boat does not carry the berth to a new owner. Recreational boats that completed 16 or more 2025 races run by the Associacao Regional de Vela do Centro get a 25 per cent discount on mooring fees for 2026, provided the client is on direct debit; boats moored permanently on Alcantara's north wall get a separate 15 per cent discount, and boats on the Museu da Marinha's own register get 50 per cent off.

What It Costs: The 2026 Marina de Lisboa Tariff

APL's 2026 rate card runs ten length classes, each split again by beam into a narrow and a wide version, with day, week, fortnight, month, semester and year prices for every one. A 6 to 8 metre boat on the narrow beam pays EUR 13.65 a night or EUR 174.60 a month; a 10 to 12 metre boat EUR 25.55 a night or EUR 334.63 a month; a 12 to 15 metre boat EUR 38.30 a night, EUR 254.63 a week or EUR 531.12 a month; a 15 to 20 metre boat, the class that covers Alcantara's own stated maximum, EUR 64.64 a night or EUR 834.14 a month, rising to EUR 74.33 and EUR 959.27 on the wider beam variant. A full year at 15 to 20 metres is EUR 7,226.11 on the standard beam. Every one of these rates already includes water and electricity supplied on the pontoons, which is stated plainly in the regulation and is a real point of difference from Cascais, where the same two services are billed as unpriced extras on top of an otherwise complete tariff.

The table keeps going well past Alcantara's own practical ceiling: class IX, 35 to 40 metres, is priced at EUR 149.50 a night; class IXA, 40 to 54 metres, at EUR 171.93; and class X, 54 to 60 metres, at EUR 197.73, with anything larger still charged at the class X rate plus 50 per cent. Multihulls are classified by length using half the beam, then the resulting class rate is itself increased by 50 per cent. Equipment is priced separately: a fixed electric crane at EUR 25.42 per indivisible half hour, a travel-lift at EUR 103.66 per half hour up to 12 metres and EUR 121.96 above that, and, specifically at Alcantara, a pump-out at EUR 14.48 per operation. A magnetic access card costs EUR 15.30, and reactivating one cancelled for non-payment costs EUR 48.32. All rates are stated as subject to VAT at the legal rate in force, without printing a percentage; Portugal's standard rate, and the one Cascais's own tariff applies, is 23 per cent.

Fuel, Power And A Haul-Out Nobody Confirms

Two independent sources agree that Alcantara has no fuel dock: a 2017 first-person review by Lars Reisberg on no-frills-sailing.com, written after a stay aboard a chartered 14 metre Dufour and a separate summary of the World Cruising and Sailing Wiki's entry for the dock. Both were describing the same physical basin this page covers, not one of the other three Marina de Lisboa docks. Yet APL's own facilities chart, printed once for all four docks together rather than per dock, shows a fuel-pump icon among the shared services, which is presumably true somewhere in the four-dock system, just apparently not here.

The same contradiction applies to lifting a boat out. The 2026 tariff prices a travel-lift and a fixed crane as services of the Marina de Lisboa system as a whole, with no stated location and Reisberg's account is explicit that Alcantara itself has no craning service and no land area for repairs, describing a dock of empty, multi-storey ex-industrial buildings rather than a working yard. Nothing published since 2017 corrects or updates that account, so Yotters could not confirm whether the position has changed; an owner planning a haul-out should ask APL by phone exactly which of the four docks holds the lift before arriving, since Alcantara on the evidence available does not.

A Container Terminal For A View, And What's On The Quay

The Alcantara container terminal, run by YILPORT Liscont as one of Lisbon's three container facilities, sits directly beside the recreational dock and it is a genuinely active piece of commercial infrastructure rather than scenery: YILPORT has put EUR 123 million into four new ship-to-shore cranes rated to handle vessels of up to 14,000 TEU and six automated, remotely operated gantry cranes and Lisbon's three terminals combined moved 321,656 TEU in the first eight months of 2025, up 5.35 per cent on the same period the year before. Reisberg's 2017 account describes the immediate marina precinct itself as isolated, with mostly empty ex-industrial buildings and a fantastic, constant hum of traffic off the Ponte 25 de Abril overhead that he called disturbing, especially at night; he also notes an immigration office on site for clearing in from outside the EU, a Pingo Doce supermarket across the road and a ten-minute walk to the tram into the city centre.

Beyond the dock gate the picture improves quickly. LX Factory, the converted industrial complex under the same bridge, is within easy walking distance and mixes international restaurants with bars and shops in a relaxed, creative-industry setting. The Doca de Santo Amaro restaurant and bar strip, in the old dock warehouses immediately next to Alcantara though administratively a separate APL dock with its own tariff and its own name, is the more upscale, riverside dining option and the area's nightlife centre, open through the evening rather than closing with the shops. An Alcantara-Mar station on the CP Cascais line, about five minutes' walk from the dock, reaches Cais do Sodre in central Lisbon in four minutes, with trains roughly every 20 minutes; Lisbon airport is around 8 km and 15 minutes away by road, at an Uber or taxi fare in the region of EUR 8 to 15 to Cais do Sodre, from where the train covers the last leg.

Tall Ships, Race Discounts, And A Calendar That Isn't Published

The clearest fixed date on record is the Tall Ships Races Lisboa, held 31 August to 3 September 2023 at Doca de Alcantara and the nearby Cais da Rocha do Conde de Obidos, which brought twelve tall ships from eight countries, including Portugal's own naval training ship Sagres and the caravel Vera Cruz alongside Spain's Atyla, together with a naval parade on the Tagus and free public visits to several of the vessels over three of the four days. Photographs from that call, taken on 2 September 2023, show the Portuguese coastguard vessel Bojador escorting Vera Cruz and Atyla at the dock, framed against the container terminal's cranes; that event is not confirmed as a recurring fixture, and Yotters found no announced date for a repeat.

Alcantara does carry one standing incentive for local racers: the 25 per cent mooring discount for boats completing 16 or more 2025 races with the Associacao Regional de Vela do Centro, described in the tariff section above. Beyond that, and unlike Cascais, whose home club Clube Naval de Cascais publishes a named season of championships and regattas, Alcantara's own operator publishes no forward events calendar at all. What Alcantara clearly does have, instead of a racing identity, is a working charter trade: platforms including Boataround, Sailo, Oceans Evasion, Sailing Italy and BednBlue all list bareboat and skippered boats based at the dock, which is consistent with a marina whose main draw is the four-minute train ride into central Lisbon rather than a fixed sporting calendar.

À terre, accès et réservation

Getting thereLisbon airport is about 8 km and roughly 15 minutes from Alcantara by road; an Uber or taxi to Cais do Sodre station runs about EUR 8 to 15. From Cais do Sodre, the CP Cascais line reaches Alcantara-Mar station, about five minutes' walk from the dock, in four minutes, with trains roughly every 20 minutes. Tram 15 also runs this route, stopping at Calvario for LX Factory and the Doca de Santo Amaro strip, though it is slower than the train.
Arriving by sea and clearing inThe entrance is about a mile upstream of the Ponte 25 de Abril on the Tagus's north shore, tucked behind a commercial wharf and, per the World Cruising and Sailing Wiki, not easy to spot from the river. Call the dock on VHF 12 (PredictWind gives 9; try both), keep to three knots once inside under APL's own regulation and expect an opening bridge across the entrance itself. The estuary here is a working tidal river with spring ranges of 3.2 to 3.6 metres at central Lisbon and a stretch of the north-bank docks has been described elsewhere as carrying 4 to 5 knots of spring stream through the entrances; Yotters could not independently confirm that figure for Alcantara specifically. An immigration office at the dock handles paperwork for boats arriving from outside the EU, per a 2017 owner account.
Reserving a berthStays of 14 days or fewer (daily, weekly, fortnightly) are booked directly with no waiting list, subject to space. Permanent berths of 30 days or more (monthly, semester, annual) go on a waiting list and renew automatically once granted. A reservation can be requested 30 days ahead and changed up to 5 days before the date without charge; later changes are billed at the daily rate from the requested date until the boat occupies the berth. Assignment needs a form at the dock office plus ID, tax number, proof of address, a valid boat survey and proof of civil liability insurance at the legal minimum.
What a berth costs, 2026 tariffOne shared table covers all four Marina de Lisboa docks, before VAT (Portugal's standard rate is 23 per cent, though the document itself states only 'the legal rate in force'). A 6 to 8 m boat: EUR 13.65 a night, EUR 174.60 a month. A 10 to 12 m boat: EUR 25.55 a night, EUR 334.63 a month. A 12 to 15 m boat: EUR 38.30 a night, EUR 254.63 a week, EUR 531.12 a month, EUR 4,762.67 a year on the wider beam class. A 15 to 20 m boat, Alcantara's stated maximum: EUR 64.64 a night, EUR 834.14 a month, EUR 7,226.11 a year (EUR 74.33, EUR 959.27 and EUR 8,310.01 on the wider beam variant). Water and electricity on the pontoon are included in every one of these figures.
Rates above Alcantara's own stated maximumThe same tariff keeps pricing classes past the 20 metres APL states as Alcantara's own ceiling: 20 to 25 m from EUR 85.49 a night; 25 to 35 m from EUR 113.04; 35 to 40 m EUR 149.50; 40 to 54 m EUR 171.93; 54 to 60 m EUR 197.73; anything larger at the top rate plus 50 per cent. Recreational vessels over 40 m (class IX or above) heading to Marina de Lisboa must take pilotage on first entry, its fee folded into the berth rate. Neither the tariff nor APL's own Alcantara-specific page says which of the four docks actually berths these larger classes.
Fuel, power and equipment chargesNo fuel berth at Alcantara, per a 2017 owner account and the World Cruising and Sailing Wiki independently, despite a fuel-pump icon on APL's combined services chart for the four-dock system. Water and electricity are included in the berth rate. Separately priced: fixed electric crane, EUR 25.42 per half hour; travel-lift, EUR 103.66 per half hour up to 12 m and EUR 121.96 above; pump-out at Alcantara specifically, EUR 14.48 per operation; magnetic access card, EUR 15.30; card reactivation after non-payment, EUR 48.32; a private-use licence for water-domain resources, EUR 89.45.
Haul-out and repairsThe 2026 tariff prices a travel-lift and a crane for the Marina de Lisboa system as a whole, without stating where they are sited. A 2017 first-person account of Alcantara itself, after a stay aboard a chartered 14 m Dufour, found no craning service and no land area for repairs on site, describing empty ex-industrial buildings rather than a working yard. Nothing published since then confirms or corrects that. Ask APL by phone which of the four docks holds the lift before planning a haul-out here.
Eating and drinking nearbyLX Factory, the converted industrial quarter under the Ponte 25 de Abril, is within an easy walk and mixes international restaurants, bars and shops in a creative-industry setting. The Doca de Santo Amaro restaurant and bar strip, in converted dock warehouses immediately next to Alcantara though a separate APL dock with its own tariff, is the more upscale riverside dining option and the area's nightlife centre. A Pingo Doce supermarket sits across the road from the marina itself, per a 2017 account, for basic provisioning.
After darkThe immediate dock precinct is quiet and, per a 2017 owner account, feels isolated after hours, with mostly empty ex-industrial buildings and a constant, disturbing hum of road traffic off the Ponte 25 de Abril overhead. Nightlife concentrates a short walk away at Doca de Santo Amaro's bars and restaurants and, further along, LX Factory, both of which run later than the marina precinct itself.
Fixed dates and what is NOT publishedThe clearest dated event on record is the Tall Ships Races Lisboa, 31 August to 3 September 2023, held at Doca de Alcantara with twelve tall ships from eight nations; no repeat date is announced. APL publishes no events calendar for Alcantara, no depth figure, no single agreed berth count (376 per the operator's own page against 427 plus 15 smaller boats per a visitor guide quoting the same operator), no confirmed VHF channel (12, 9 and 68 all appear across independent sources), no confirmed location for the priced travel-lift and crane and no statement of where boats over 20 metres within the Marina de Lisboa system actually berth.

Ce que rapportent propriétaires et équipages

Les points forts et les points de vigilance

Points forts

  • The cheapest, most central overnight stop in LisbonAlcantara-Mar station, about five minutes' walk from the dock, reaches Cais do Sodre in central Lisbon in four minutes on trains roughly every 20 minutes, and a night in the 12 to 15 metre class costs EUR 38.30 before VAT, water and electricity included.
  • Water and electricity are actually included in the berth rateAPL's 2026 tariff states plainly that every published rate already includes water and electricity supplied on the pontoons, a genuine point of difference from Cascais's own tariff, which bills both as unpriced extras on top of an otherwise complete price list.
  • A real, working charter baseBoataround, Sailo, Oceans Evasion, Sailing Italy and BednBlue all independently list bareboat and skippered boats based at Doca de Alcantara, evidence of an active commercial fleet rather than a purely transient stopover.
  • A genuinely sheltered, inland berthUnlike Cascais, which the World Cruising and Sailing Wiki and Sea-Seek both describe as exposed to a strong southerly, Alcantara sits inside the Tagus behind the Ponte 25 de Abril, out of the Atlantic swell entirely.
  • A detailed, itemised tariff down to the half hourCrane time, travel-lift time, pump-out, magnetic cards and even card reactivation after non-payment are all priced to the euro in the same document as the berth rate, letting an owner cost a stay precisely in advance, equipment location aside.
  • A standing discount for local racersBoats completing 16 or more 2025 races with the Associacao Regional de Vela do Centro get 25 per cent off their 2026 mooring fee, a real incentive for an owner based here through a racing season.

Points de vigilance

  • No two sources agree on the berth count or the maximum lengthAPL's own current page and PredictWind both give 376 berths and a 20 metre maximum; a Portuguese-language visitor guide citing the same operator gives 427 boats over 6 metres plus 15 smaller ones; other summaries put the range at 370 to 440. None is dated, and Yotters could not resolve the difference.
  • No fuel and, on the only account available, no haul-outA 2017 owner review and the World Cruising and Sailing Wiki independently confirm no fuel berth at Alcantara, and the same owner review found no craning service and no land area for repairs on site, despite both a fuel pump and a travel-lift appearing on APL's shared services chart for the four-dock system.
  • Constant traffic noise off the bridge overheadA 2017 eyewitness describes the hum of the Ponte 25 de Abril's traffic as never ceasing, day and night and disturbing enough to affect sleep aboard.
  • An isolated immediate precinctThe same account describes the dock itself as surrounded by mostly empty, multi-storey ex-industrial buildings, disconnected from the livelier LX Factory and Doca de Santo Amaro areas a short walk away.
  • The only detailed owner account on record is nine years oldYotters found no independent, first-person review of Alcantara published more recently than March 2017, so facilities, wifi quality and the fuel and haul-out situation may have changed without any public record of it.
  • A working container terminal is the viewThe Alcantara container terminal beside the marina moved a share of the 321,656 TEU Lisbon's three terminals handled in the first eight months of 2025 and has just taken a EUR 123 million crane upgrade, meaning active commercial shipping, not open water, dominates the outlook.
  • No published events calendarUnlike Cascais, whose home club publishes a named season of championships, Alcantara's only confirmed fixed date is a one-off 2023 tall ships call, with no announced recurrence and no forward calendar published by APL.

Pour qui: An owner or skipper who wants the cheapest, most central overnight stop in Lisbon, four minutes by train from Cais do Sodre and does not mind a working container terminal for scenery, road noise from the bridge overhead and a self-service, no-frills kind of dock. Not an owner who wants fuel on the pontoon, a confirmed haul-out or a superyacht berth: Alcantara's own operator caps it at 20 metres, and nobody, including the operator, states clearly where boats bigger than that go within the wider Marina de Lisboa system.
