Rob Humphreys Yacht Design

Rob Humphreys has been drawing boats since a Jersey One Tonner in 1973, and Humphreys Yacht Design, the Lymington studio he founded in 1974, now spans everything from Admiral's Cup raceboats and Ellen MacArthur's Vendee Globe runner-up Kingfisher to the bluewater cruisers of Oyster Yachts, the swing-keel Southerlys, a quarter century of Elan sailing yachts and, in 2026, the 49.9 metre custom explorer Canoa. His son Tom, a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, now co-runs the office, and the partnership has kept working across two builder insolvencies and, this year, a second Oyster 825 keel incident that a buyer researching this studio needs to know about.

From a Jersey One Tonner to His Own Studio

Humphreys' own studio and Boat International's independent company profile both give 1974 as the founding year, with the office growing out of racing yacht work rather than starting as a production-boat practice. Humphreys took an honours degree in industrial design and engineering before turning to naval architecture full time, and that product-design background is one the studio still cites as shaping how it approaches ergonomics and layout rather than hull lines alone.

The racing pedigree that followed is well documented and independently corroborated: the One Tonner Jade won the 1985 One Ton Cup world championship, the 81 foot Whitbread maxi Rothmans finished fourth overall and second among sloops in the 1989 to 1990 Whitbread Round the World Race under skipper Lawrie Smith, and Humphreys chaired the designers' group during the International America's Cup Class formation session in 1995 when the Cup moved on from Twelve Metres. He also co-designed, with Owen Clarke Design and Giovanni Belgranno, the IMOCA 60 Kingfisher that Ellen MacArthur sailed to second place in the 2000 to 2001 Vendee Globe, a world record at the time for a woman's solo non-stop circumnavigation.

The Oyster Partnership That Remade the Studio

The Oyster 56 sold eleven hulls before it had even launched, an Oyster pre-sale record, and went on to become the yard's most popular model with 75 built over twelve years. It was designed with Loughborough University's ergonomics department and was the first Oyster with an ergonomically engineered cockpit, a detail that points at the industrial-design thread running through Humphreys' work rather than pure hull optimisation. Oyster and Humphreys both describe the relationship as continuing and central: Oyster Yachts' own material credits Humphreys with more than twenty models between 56 feet and 125 feet, spanning the 46, 54, 575, 655, 745, 825 and flagship 885.

The relationship survived Oyster Marine's collapse into administration on 5 February 2018, brought on by low margins, poor cost control and an insurance claim tied to a 2015 capsize, discussed below. When entrepreneur Richard Hadida bought the business out of administration weeks later, Humphreys joined the reconstituted board as a non-executive director alongside Eddie Jordan and Ashley Highfield, and the design partnership continued uninterrupted into newer models such as the Oyster 495, European Yacht of the Year in the luxury cruiser category for 2023.

Rob Humphreys drew his first boat as a Jersey Quarter Tonner in 1973 and is still drawing new ones in 2026, a 49.9 metre hybrid explorer for JFA Yachts, a fifty-year span that also took in an America's Cup design chairmanship, Ellen MacArthur's Vendee Globe runner-up Kingfisher, more than twenty Oyster models and, this August, a second Oyster 825 keel incident a buyer researching the yard needs to read about.

Two Oyster 825 Keel Incidents a Buyer Needs to Know About

Polina Star III, an early-hull Oyster 825, sank on 4 July 2015 after her keel separated; when the wreck was raised, investigators reported no impact damage to the keel's leading edge and traced the failure to poor lamination in a fabricated joint in the hull structure, a manufacturing rather than a design defect. Oyster subsequently inspected other early 825 hulls, found similar lamination problems, reinforced two of them and changed its build method for later hulls.

Viva La Vida, an 825 launched in 2019, capsized and later sank on 21 August 2026 during Hamilton Island Race Week in Australia's Whitsunday Islands after running aground on a reef while sailing downwind under spinnaker in shallow water; all ten aboard were evacuated safely. Oyster's own statement called it premature to draw conclusions before a full technical assessment of the salvaged hull, and reporting on the incident notes no confirmed technical link to the 2015 failure has been established. Both cases are worth knowing before buying any 825, but they should not be read as the same event: one is a settled manufacturing-defect finding, the other an open investigation into a grounding.

The Southerly Swing Keel, a Design Credited to Three Names

Northshore, the original builder, commissioned the American designer Dick Carter to develop the variable-draft swing keel concept in 1978. Humphreys was later brought in to refine it, correcting rudder ventilation problems in what became the Southerly 115 Mark II, and from around 2000 he worked alongside Stephen Jones and Ed Dubois on hull designs for a run of models including the 32, 38 and 135, all carrying the airfoil-shaped swing keel. Southerly's own owners' association puts the fleet at over 1,100 boats worldwide.

The three-designer credit persisted after Discovery Yachts bought the Southerly brand in 2017 and continued through models such as the 42, 435, 480 and 54, and it survived Discovery Shipyard's own move into receivership in January 2022. Concept Yachts bought the Southerly brand in 2023 and is building new hulls, including a first three-cabin Southerly 420, at its Southampton yard as of 2026, so the brand is active but has changed ownership twice since Humphreys' name was first attached to it, and this research found no source that separates his specific contribution from Jones' or Dubois' on any individual Southerly hull.

A Quarter Century With Elan, Then a Collaboration With Porsche

The Elan GT5, a 43 foot cruiser launched in 2017, reused an existing go-fast hull from Elan's E5 racer under a new deck and a detuned rig aimed at comfortable short-handed cruising. The GT6 that followed was a clean-sheet 49 foot design built on new tooling, with Humphreys responsible for the naval architecture and hull form and Studio F.A. Porsche for the exterior and interior styling. SAIL Magazine named the GT6 its Best Boat for 2022 in the 40 to 50 foot cruising monohull category, calling it fast and responsive enough to interest racing sailors without intimidating cruisers, while flagging genuine shortcomings: no dedicated navigation station, a foredeck short on handholds and low-slung wheel pedestals without grab bars in rough conditions.

A parallel project, the Elan E6, paired Humphreys with the Italian styling house Pininfarina and the composites specialist Gurit, and won a Red Dot product design award in 2022. Across the relationship Humphreys' role has stayed consistently on the engineering and hull-form side, with a named styling partner credited separately on each headline model, a division of labour the studio and Elan both describe openly rather than blur, unlike the Southerly credit above.

From Production Cruisers to a 50 Metre Explorer

The Arksen 85 is a 27.4 metre aluminium explorer with Humphreys Yacht Design credited for the exterior, hull form and general arrangement and Design Unlimited for the interior; the studio describes an extensive research and development programme behind its fast-displacement hull, combining physical model testing with computational fluid dynamics, aimed at a quoted range up to 7,000 nautical miles. Rob's son and co-director Tom worked the project directly alongside him.

Canoa, JFA Yachts' flagship, went further still: a 49.9 metre, 498 gross ton hybrid explorer with an aluminium hull and a composite superstructure, diesel-electric propulsion from twin MTU engines, a quoted 5,000 nautical mile range at cruising speed, and interior design credited to M2 Atelier. It shows the same naval architect who drew a 1973 Quarter Tonner still doing new work at the top of the custom-build market more than fifty years later, a span very few working yacht designers can claim.

What a Boat or a Commission Actually Costs

An Elan GT6 was priced at 625,759 US dollars as tested by Sail Magazine in August 2022. Oyster's own new-boat material puts the Oyster 495 at a 1.6 million dollar base price rising to roughly 1.9 million dollars fully specified, before options such as a carbon rig add further cost. On the secondhand market, Oyster 56 listings this research reviewed ranged from 420,000 euros VAT excluded for a 1999 hull to 565,000 US dollars duty paid for a 2005 example, a spread wide enough that a buyer should treat any single asking price as a starting point for negotiation rather than a market rate.

What is not published anywhere this research found is a Humphreys-specific design fee, for either a production licence like Elan or Oyster or a bespoke commission like Canoa. The wider industry reference points are inconsistent by market segment: Kasten Marine Design, an independent US design office, quotes roughly 10 to 12 per cent of as-built cost as a typical fixed commission for a fully outfitted custom yacht at a professional yard, while SuperYachtReview's price guide for the superyacht segment specifically separates a 1 to 5 per cent design fee from a further 2 to 4 per cent for project management. Neither figure is confirmed as what Humphreys itself charges on any project, and a buyer wanting a new commission has to approach the Lymington studio directly to find out.

Who Should Buy Into This Studio's Work

The strongest case for this studio is continuity and range at once: a sailing pedigree stretching from a 1973 dinghy through an America's Cup design chairmanship and a Vendee Globe runner-up, into a still-active partnership with three separate production builders and, in 2026, a 50 metre custom explorer. Named owners back this up in their own words. Sir Peter Davies, who owned five different Oysters between 1995 and 2009 including two Humphreys-era 56s, said of the model that you could just as easily operate her with a professional crew crossing the Atlantic as handle her shorthanded in the Caribbean, and praised the yard's project management and the boats' resale value. Miguel and Carmen Garcia, who circumnavigated aboard an Oyster 56 before moving up to a 595, told Oyster's own owner series that she gives me so much confidence, in fact I can honestly say I never have any fears or concerns of crossing the oceans because she is a strong boat and performs exceptionally well in the wildest of conditions.

The honest caveats sit alongside that praise rather than replacing it. Reviewing the Oyster 495 for Yachting Monthly, Sam Fortescue called it solid, well-built and beautifully finished while also flagging impractical halyard handling that needs mousing lines, an over-reliance on hydraulic trim systems, and twelve interior level changes that create real tripping hazards below decks, an honest professional test rather than brochure copy. Set against the two Oyster 825 keel incidents and the unresolved credit split on Southerly hulls, the pattern is of a studio whose engineering has stood up across five decades and several builders, but whose individual boats, like any yacht, still need their own history checked hull by hull before you buy.

Informazioni pratiche

How to commission new workapproach Humphreys Yacht Design directly in Lymington, England for a bespoke naval architecture commission (as JFA Yachts did for the 49.9m Canoa), or buy a current production model from Oyster, Elan, Southerly or Arksen, each of which licenses a Humphreys design rather than taking a one-off commission
Design feenot published by Humphreys Yacht Design for any project, production or custom; the general industry reference points found in this research are roughly 10 to 12 per cent of as-built cost for a fully outfitted custom yacht (Kasten Marine Design) or, for superyachts specifically, 1 to 5 per cent design fee plus 2 to 4 per cent project management (SuperYachtReview), neither confirmed as this studio's own rate
New Oyster 495roughly US$1.6 million base price, around US$1.9 million fully specified, with further cost for options such as a carbon rig, per Oyster Yachts' own 2023 pricing material
New Elan GT6US$625,759 as tested and priced in August 2022 (Sail Magazine); current pricing should be confirmed directly with Elan, as this figure will have moved with the exchange rate and options since
Used Oyster 56listings reviewed for this page ranged from EUR420,000 VAT excluded for a 1999 hull to US$565,000 duty paid for a 2005 hull; treat any single asking price as a starting point, not a market rate, given that spread
Southerly and Arksen pricingnot gathered in enough independent detail for this page to publish a reliable figure; a buyer should get a current quote directly from Concept Yachts (Southerly) or Arksen rather than rely on older listings, since both brands have changed hands or are newer to market
Before buying an early Oyster 825ask the selling yard or broker for the hull-specific remediation history following the 2015 Polina Star III lamination defect finding, and separately review the pending investigation into the August 2026 Viva La Vida capsize before assuming the two incidents are connected
What is not publishedany Humphreys-specific design fee or day rate; which of the three credited Southerly designers did what on any individual hull; the outcome of the technical investigation into the Viva La Vida capsize, which was still pending at the time of writing

Punti di forza

  • Unmatched breadth across five decades, from dinghies to a 50 metre explorerThe same studio drew a 1973 Quarter Tonner, chaired the 1995 America's Cup IACC designers' group, co-designed Ellen MacArthur's Vendee Globe runner-up Kingfisher, sold 75 Oyster 56 hulls and delivered the 49.9m custom explorer Canoa in 2026
  • Owners across decades and models report genuine confidence and satisfaction, not brochure sentimentSir Peter Davies bought five Oysters over 14 years and rates the 56 his favourite; Miguel and Carmen Garcia say their Oyster 595 gives them no fear crossing oceans in the wildest conditions
  • Sustained award recognition in two very different market segments at onceOyster 495, European Yacht of the Year 2023 in the luxury cruiser category; Elan GT6, SAIL Magazine Best Boat 2022; the related Elan E6 project, a 2022 Red Dot product design award
  • Succession is secured, unlike some rival studios that closed with their founderTom Humphreys, a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, joined full time in 2006 and now co-directs the studio with his father, with both credited by name on current projects like the Arksen 85

Da valutare

  • Two Oyster 825 keel incidents, one confirmed manufacturing defect and one still under investigationPolina Star III sank in 2015 after a confirmed lamination defect in the keel stub; Viva La Vida capsized in August 2026 after running aground, with Oyster itself saying it would be premature to draw conclusions before a full technical assessment
  • Southerly hull-design credit is shared three ways and rarely broken down model by modelHumphreys, Stephen Jones and Ed Dubois have shared credit on Southerly hulls since around 2000, and this research found no source that separates any one designer's specific contribution on an individual model
  • No Humphreys-specific design fee has ever been published, for production licensing or bespoke commissionsThe only figures available anywhere are generic industry bands, roughly 10 to 12 per cent of build cost from one US design office for a custom yacht, versus a separately quoted 1 to 5 per cent design fee plus 2 to 4 per cent project management specifically for superyachts, neither one confirmed as what this studio itself charges
  • Two of the studio's core builder relationships have both changed hands under financial pressureOyster Marine went into administration in February 2018; Discovery Shipyard, which owned the Southerly brand, went into receivership in January 2022 and Southerly was sold on to Concept Yachts in 2023, so a design partnership staying constant has not meant the builder itself staying stable

A chi si rivolge: A buyer wanting a well proven, currently supported bluewater cruiser from Oyster or Elan, or a shoal-draft Southerly from an active though twice-sold builder, is well served by this studio's fifty-year record; anyone specifically considering an early-hull Oyster 825 should read its keel history first and ask the yard for remediation paperwork before making an offer.
