A Development Sells Its Marina to a Marina Company
Christophe Harbour was built by Charles 'Buddy' Darby III, a superyacht owner and real estate developer, as the working marina inside a 2,500 acre resort and residential community on St Kitts' South East Peninsula. The first berths opened on 27 March 2015 as a USD 100 million infrastructure project, built in partnership with the Government of St Kitts and Nevis, which has held a shareholding in the development. Six freehold berths for 106m to 122m yachts followed on 11 October 2018, priced by Boat International at USD 6.25 million to USD 7 million each. Darby said at the time that there were not many places a superyacht that size could dock safely in the Caribbean whatever the weather, and Christophe Harbour's pitch has always rested on the enclosed, naturally protected basin rather than an open roadstead.
The May 2025 sale changed the ownership without changing the pitch. Safe Harbor Marinas, which Blackstone describes as the largest marina and superyacht servicing business in the United States with 138 marinas across the US and Puerto Rico, had itself just been bought out of Sun Communities' structure by Blackstone Infrastructure in an all-cash deal that closed 30 April 2025. St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Terrance Drew called the Christophe Harbour sale, agreed weeks later, a new chapter for the island's push into maritime investment; Safe Harbor's own executives announced immediate plans to lengthen the largest berths to 350 ft (107m). For an owner the practical change is a network account: a berth here now books through the same group as Safe Harbor's Puerto Rico properties, Puerto del Rey and San Juan, rather than through an independent developer's marina office.

What the Marina Actually Holds, and What It Still Plans To
Boat International's account of the 2015 opening gives 24 alongside berths for the first phase; a 2016 trade profile in The Islander Magazine gives 23. Either way, that original phase covered vessels from about 26m to 67m. The six-berth expansion for 106m to 122m yachts in October 2018, confirmed independently by Boat International and YachtCharterFleet, made Christophe Harbour the only enclosed Caribbean marina able to take a vessel that size year round, on Darby's own account. That puts the built total at 30 berths, a figure MarinaBerths.com's listing also gives, quoting a maximum length of 400 ft, close to the 122m upper figure from 2018.
Safe Harbor's own live listing for the property, read in September 2026, gives a length overall range of 80 ft to 377 ft (about 115m), unrestricted air draught, 70 ft beam and 18.5 ft (5.6m) draught. A separate berth-broker aggregator, Yachtly Crew, still lists a maximum LOA of 92m with the same 5.6m draught, evidently not updated since the sale; the draught figure at least is consistent across both. None of this reaches the masterplan Christophe Harbour has quoted since at least 2015: 250 alongside berths at full build-out, 50 to 60 of them for superyachts to 76m. A decade after opening, the marina has built roughly one eighth of that plan and Safe Harbor's own expansion announcement talks about lengthening the largest berths rather than adding to the total count.

Buddy Darby, the yacht owner who built the marina, put it plainly when he added six 100m-plus berths in 2018: there are not many places a superyacht that size can dock safely in the Caribbean whatever the weather.

Arriving by Sea, Clearing In and the Thirty Dollar Fee
The marina office and several independent berth directories, including Yachtly Crew and triangleberthbrokers.com, agree on VHF channel 71 as the working channel and Christophe Harbour's own arrival guidance asks a captain to call within 5 nautical miles to be met and briefed on berth assignment, weather and any hazards before entering the naturally protected harbour and its wide turning basin. Noonsite's fee page, read in 2026, gives the on-site Customs and Immigration Admin fee as USD 30, current from at least February 2025, covering clearing in and out as a single payment with no separate Immigration charge and no overtime fee. Fuel and provisions land duty free, and yacht and aircraft crew are exempt from St Kitts work permit fees, a genuine saving for a vessel that changes crew through the islands.
The national rules apply here as anywhere else in the Federation: register the vessel and crew on SailClear before arrival, file the online Embarkation and Disembarkation form with passport details matched exactly to the documents, fly the yellow Q flag until cleared and keep everyone but the captain aboard until clearance is granted. Caribbean Compass describes Christophe Harbour as the most straightforward port of entry for St Kitts during the yachting season, November to May, a phrasing that implies lighter staffing outside those months; Yotters could not find a published year-round clearance schedule or confirmed office hours from either the marina or Safe Harbor to settle the point, so a summer arrival is worth confirming ahead by phone.

Booking a Berth, and Buying One Outright
Safe Harbor's live St Kitts page lists +1 869 765 0312 and daily office hours of 8am to 6pm for inquiries, alongside a HubSpot contact form for superyacht bookings that asks for the vessel's length, beam, draught and height and whether the interest is a transient slip, a wet slip or ownership. That has effectively replaced the marina's earlier direct line and [email protected] address, which older trade listings still carry. A yacht agent already active in the northeast Caribbean, of the kind that books IGY's Simpson Bay or Isle de Sol berths, can equally place a booking here as part of a wider itinerary, though Yotters found no St Kitts-specific agent named by Christophe Harbour itself in the way BWA Yachting is named at Simpson Bay.
The freehold model is the more unusual fact for anyone used to a conventional marina lease. Boat International's 2018 coverage put the six largest berths at USD 6.25 million to USD 7 million each, sold as owned real estate rather than a rented slip and both Boat International and YachtCharterFleet reported that a qualifying purchase, berths included, has been marketed against St Kitts and Nevis' Citizenship by Investment programme, which offers visa-free travel to more than 120 countries. No current price for a freehold berth, or for a standard rented slip at any length, is published by either Christophe Harbour or Safe Harbor as of September 2026.

The Fuel Farm, and What Nothing Else Costs
Times Caribbean Online's report on the fuel farm's installation gives an onsite tank capacity of 48,000 US gallons, in-slip delivery of up to 40,000 US gallons a day, a flow rate up to 125 gallons a minute and Sol as the supplying refiner of the ultra-low-sulphur diesel, at a price the same report puts roughly 10 cents a US gallon below the island retail average because the fuel lands without import duty. My Reading Room's account of a single 66m Feadship taking on 30,000 US gallons in one call illustrates the scale the farm is built for; that is most of a day's rated throughput in one vessel's tanks.
Beyond fuel, the marina's own marketing describes 'ample power for superyachts up to 250 ft' without publishing amperage, voltage or a tariff and Safe Harbor's live listing does the same for water and other hookups. No berth rate of any kind, transient or annual, at any length, appears on either operator's site as of September 2026 and none of the third-party berth brokers or aggregators Yotters checked, including MarinaBerths.com and Direct Berth, publish one either; all direct an inquiry to a broker or the marina. For a marina that has now changed corporate parent twice in one year, that is a gap worth asking about directly and in writing before committing a booking.

The Airport, and the Private Alternative
SKB is served, per flight-route aggregators read in 2026, by American Airlines from Miami and Charlotte, JetBlue and American from New York, Air Canada from Toronto on the island's longest scheduled route at around 5 hours 30 minutes and British Airways from London Gatwick, alongside regional carriers to Antigua, Barbados, St Maarten, Trinidad and Tortola. Robert L Bradshaw sits on the opposite side of the island from Christophe Harbour, near Basseterre, so the transfer is a real drive rather than the few minutes IGY Simpson Bay Marina in St Maarten offers off its own airport apron; multiple route-planning sources put it at about 10 miles and 31 minutes.
Christophe Harbour's own literature also names the YU Lounge, a private-aviation terminal, as a partner facility for VIP jet clearance paired with the marina's own yacht clearance, a pairing several trade profiles describe as one of the development's selling points for an owner who flies crew or guests in privately rather than through the main terminal. Basseterre itself, the island's capital and its other port of entry, is about 25 minutes by car from Christophe Harbour, which is the practical distance to a hospital, a bank branch or anything beyond the resort's own retail if a boat needs something the marina village does not stock.
Marina Village, Salt Plage and What Crew Actually Do Ashore
Salt Plage sits on the water by the marina, its corrugated-steel roof and reclaimed timber built from 1940s salt-warehouse materials according to a 2016 trade profile, and Christophe Harbour's own site gives its hours as Wednesday to Sunday, roughly 4pm to 10:30pm, with live music and craft cocktails as the draw. The Pavilion Beach Club at Sandy Bank Bay, a members' facility per the same profile, runs lunch Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm and dinner Thursday to Saturday 5:30pm to 8:30pm, and its beach now carries padel courts, a plunge pool and a watersports set-up built out since the 2016 account, visible on the marina's own current photography. Crew get their own space too: a crew lounge and gym sit above the marina, in what a 2016 profile described as a planned Customs House.
For anyone who wants to leave the development, Safe Harbor's own site lists L'Escale Wine Bar and Bistro 7.2 miles away, Spice Mill Fusion Caribbean Kitchen at 2.7 miles and Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, the island's UNESCO site, at 18.8 miles, alongside Islander Watersports on Nevis a short crossing over The Narrows. The Park Hyatt St Kitts Christophe Harbour resort, the development's flagship hotel, is about a 25 minute walk from the marina, close enough for dinner without a car; TripAdvisor reviews of that hotel, separate from the marina itself, describe it as remote and expensive with a spread-out layout and, at times, sargassum seaweed on the beach, which is worth knowing before promising guests a resort evening on foot.
The Honest Weaknesses
No berth rate card exists at Christophe Harbour or under Safe Harbor's ownership, at any length or season and none of the third-party brokers Yotters checked publish one either; every figure is negotiated directly and, going by Boat International's only published freehold price from 2018, at levels that assume a wealthy buyer rather than a browsing charterer. The marina's own headline size figures do not agree with each other: Safe Harbor's current listing gives up to about 115m while an unrevised broker aggregator still shows 92m, and the 250-berth masterplan Christophe Harbour has quoted since its 2015 launch remains about one eighth built a decade later, with only 30 alongside berths actually in the water.
The location cuts both ways. The enclosed, naturally protected harbour that is the marina's whole pitch also sits on an isolated peninsula that only got a paved road in the 1990s, roughly 25 minutes from Basseterre and its hospital, banks and wider services; a crew that needs a part or a specialist not stocked in the marina village is driving for it, unlike the concentrated chandlery and repair trade a bigger boating hub like St Maarten's Simpson Bay Lagoon offers on the same water as the berths. And the corporate ground has shifted fast: Safe Harbor changed its own owner to Blackstone Infrastructure on 30 April 2025 and bought Christophe Harbour three weeks later, so the operator running the marina today has been in charge of it and of itself for a little over a year. That is not a criticism of the service reported so far, which visiting crew rate well, but it is a reason to confirm anything price- or policy-related in writing rather than from an older brochure.
A terra, accessi e prenotazioni
| Getting there | Robert L Bradshaw International (SKB) sits on the opposite side of St Kitts from Christophe Harbour, near Basseterre and route trackers read in 2026 put the transfer at about 10 miles and 31 minutes by road. American Airlines flies from Miami and Charlotte, JetBlue and American from New York, Air Canada from Toronto on the island's longest scheduled route at around 5 hours 30 minutes and British Airways from London Gatwick, with regional connections to Antigua, Barbados, St Maarten, Trinidad and Tortola. Christophe Harbour's own literature also names the YU Lounge private-aviation terminal as a partner for VIP jet clearance paired with the marina's own yacht clearance. |
|---|---|
| Arriving by sea, and the approach | Hail the marina office on VHF channel 71 within 5 nautical miles of arrival; Christophe Harbour's own guidance says a tender will meet larger yachts outside the harbour with a briefing on weather, berth assignment and any hazards before entry through the wide turning basin into the naturally protected harbour. Independent berth directories including Yachtly Crew and triangleberthbrokers.com confirm channel 71 as the working frequency. Yotters could not find published operating hours for the arrival desk itself, as distinct from the marina office's general 8am to 6pm. |
| Clearing in and out | Christophe Harbour is a designated port of entry, one of two on St Kitts alongside Basseterre, with Customs and Immigration on site. Noonsite gives the Customs and Immigration Admin fee as USD 30, current from at least February 2025, covering clearing in and out as one payment with no separate Immigration charge and no overtime fee. Nationally, every arriving yacht must register on SailClear, file the online Embarkation and Disembarkation form before arrival with passport details matched exactly, fly the yellow Q flag until cleared and keep all but the captain aboard until clearance is granted. Fuel and provisions land duty free, and yacht and aircraft crew are exempt from St Kitts work permit fees. |
| Reserving a berth | Safe Harbor's live St Kitts page lists +1 869 765 0312, open daily 8am to 6pm and a HubSpot inquiry form asking for the vessel's length, beam, draught and height and whether the interest is a transient slip, a wet slip or a freehold purchase; that channel has effectively replaced the marina's older direct line and [email protected] address, which some trade listings still carry. Yotters found no St Kitts-specific yacht agent named by the marina itself, unlike the named agents at some other Caribbean home ports. |
| What a berth costs | No rate card is published for a rented berth at any length or season, by Christophe Harbour or by Safe Harbor, as of September 2026. The only published figure of any kind is historical: Boat International reported the six freehold berths for 106m to 122m yachts, added in 2018, at USD 6.25 million to USD 7 million each, sold as owned marine real estate rather than a lease. No current freehold price is published either. |
| Fuel, power and water | Times Caribbean Online's report on the marina's fuel farm gives 48,000 US gallons of onsite tank capacity, in-slip delivery of up to 40,000 US gallons a day at up to 125 gallons a minute of Sol-supplied ultra-low-sulphur diesel, and a price about 10 cents a US gallon under the island retail average because it lands duty free; a single 66m Feadship took on 30,000 US gallons in one call, by My Reading Room's account, which is most of a day's rated throughput. Shore power is advertised only as 'ample power for superyachts up to 250 ft', with no amperage, voltage or tariff published and the same is true of water. |
| Berth ownership and citizenship | A number of Christophe Harbour's largest berths are sold freehold rather than leased, an unusual structure for the region and Boat International and YachtCharterFleet both reported in 2018 that a qualifying purchase at Christophe Harbour, berths included, has been marketed against St Kitts and Nevis' Citizenship by Investment programme, which gives visa-free travel to more than 120 countries. |
| Eating, the beach club and after dark | Salt Plage, built from 1940s salt-warehouse materials according to a 2016 trade profile, is the marina's own beach bar and restaurant, open Wednesday to Sunday from about 4pm to 10:30pm with live music. The Pavilion Beach Club on Sandy Bank Bay, a members' facility with padel courts, a plunge pool and watersports, serves lunch Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm and dinner Thursday to Saturday 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Further afield, Safe Harbor's own site lists L'Escale Wine Bar and Bistro at 7.2 miles and Spice Mill Fusion Caribbean Kitchen at 2.7 miles. The Park Hyatt St Kitts Christophe Harbour resort is about a 25 minute walk from the marina. |
| The wider island | Basseterre, the capital and the island's other port of entry, is about 25 minutes by car and is the practical destination for a hospital, a bank branch or a chandlery beyond what the marina village stocks. Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, the island's UNESCO World Heritage site, is 18.8 miles from the marina by Safe Harbor's own figures, and Nevis lies a short crossing away across The Narrows. |
| What is NOT published | No berth tariff at any length or season, no power or water rate and no current fuel pump price beyond the general 'about 10 cents under retail' figure. The marina's own size figures do not agree with a still-live third-party aggregator. Clearance office hours outside the stated November to May season are not published. And the 250-berth masterplan Christophe Harbour has quoted since 2015 remains, a decade on and one ownership change later, about one eighth built. |

Crew who have actually stayed rate the practical side highly
Google reviewers named on Safe Harbor's own St Kitts page include Stephen McHugh, who cited 'great amenities and activities for crew', as well as David Dias, who thanked marina staff by name, Mel, for finding the boat a spot on the dock during rough weather.
Safe Harbor customer reviewsA visiting sailor's read on the setting
Reviewer David Ar-Al described it as a 'nice secluded harbour' with an easy taxi to dinner at the Park Hyatt, and Douglas Stevens called it an 'incredible marina' with 'super friendly staff'.
Safe Harbor customer reviewsThe marina's own read on its job is crew support, not owner hospitality
Aeneas Hollins, the marina's director of yachting and previously Buddy Darby's own captain, told trade press 'we like to think of ourselves as an extension of your crew on shore' and said charter crew return because the marina understands guest care. This is the operator's own framing rather than an independent account, and is presented here as such.
The Islander MagazineThe resort next door draws real complaints about cost and remoteness
TripAdvisor reviews of the Park Hyatt St Kitts Christophe Harbour, the resort a short walk from the marina, describe it as remote and expensive, with a spread-out property and, at times, sargassum seaweed on the beach. This is the resort rather than the marina itself, but it is the shore side of the same development and bears on anyone planning an evening ashore.
