L'alimentazione da terra eroga l'alto amperaggio che una grande unità assorbe, e il rifornimento si può organizzare in banchina senza spostare la barca.

L'isola attorno alla marina aggiunge una profondità di servizio che pochi porti isolati eguagliano. Alberghi e ristoranti stanno a distanza pedonale dalla banchina, accanto alle strutture del circuito. Lo status di capitale di Abu Dhabi porta i servizi bancari e d'affari che alcuni armatori apprezzano. Sole invernale e Gran Premio

Il calendario di Yas Marina è l'immagine speculare di quello mediterraneo. La sua stagione va lungo l'inverno boreale, da circa ottobre ad aprile, quando il Golfo gode di un tempo caldo e stabile. Il Gran Premio di Abu Dhabi, a fine autunno, è il pezzo forte della marina e riempie i posti barca di yacht i cui ospiti seguono le gare dall'acqua. La collocazione sul circuito dà a quel fine settimana un carattere che nessun porto europeo può copiare.

Fuori dal Gran Premio, la marina offre una base per esplorare il Golfo e la regione più ampia. Le acque al largo di Abu Dhabi e della vicina Dubai danno agli armatori un luogo dove navigare nei mesi invernali. Il giro è più nuovo e meno consolidato di quello mediterraneo, anche se cresce man mano che più yacht svernano nella regione. Per gli armatori che inseguono il sole, il calendario è tutto il punto. Le temperature diurne restano gradevoli per tutto l'inverno, e le acque circostanti sono abbastanza calme per una navigazione rilassata fra le isole al largo della costa.

Dove si colloca nei piani di un armatore

Yas Marina si addice all'armatore che vuole tenere lo yacht attivo quando la stagione mediterranea finisce. Funziona come base invernale per chi naviga nel Golfo, o come tappa di preparazione per gli yacht diretti più a est verso l'Oceano Indiano e l'Asia. Il Gran Premio dà all'anno un punto fermo attorno a cui pianificare. Per uno yacht che gira il mondo, riempie un vuoto nel calendario.

Per gran parte della flotta che la usa, la marina è una base stagionale più che un porto base permanente. La distanza dalle principali aree europee fa sì che tenda a essere abbinata a una base mediterranea. Per gli armatori che passano parte dell'anno nella regione, però, offre strutture moderne e un tempo invernale affidabile. Quella combinazione ne ha fatto il principale indirizzo del Golfo per i superyacht.

Power, fuel, waste and technical support

Shore power runs from 16 amps up to 1,000 amps, which covers the largest visitors alongside. Fresh water is supplied at every berth, black and grey water pump-out is available, and there is general waste disposal. Bunkering for larger yachts is arranged on site, with a fuel station about half a mile away and a 60 metre dock station near the marina for larger deliveries.

Technical work is not done at Yas. The marina points owners to the shipyards at Mussafah Port on the mainland, which it describes as competitively priced, and that is where haul-outs and refit work go. The marina also assists with UAE maritime regulations and the navigation licences a foreign yacht needs to move in Emirati waters, which is a genuine service because the paperwork here is unfamiliar to European crews.

Security, privacy and how public the setting is

Security is 24 hour with CCTV across the marina and 24 hour berthing assistance on the docks. Abu Dhabi is a low-crime jurisdiction and access to the pontoons is controlled. On the security question there is nothing to worry about.

Privacy is a different matter and the answer is qualified. The marina is embedded in a mass-market leisure island with theme parks, a concert arena and a race circuit, and the waterfront promenade with its licensed restaurants and bars runs right along the berths. During race week the yachts are part of the spectacle, photographed from the grandstands and the track. Outside the marquee weekends the island is quiet and a yacht here attracts almost no attention.

Ashore, the airport and a family week

Abu Dhabi International is the closest airport, minutes from the island by road, with long-haul connections and full business-jet handling. That is as good as airport access gets for a marina anywhere. Dubai is roughly an hour and a half up the coast.

For a family week the island is unusually well supplied. Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros World and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi are all within a few minutes of the quay, a Disneyland Abu Dhabi is in development, and the W Abu Dhabi hotel sits over the track itself. There is a row of licensed restaurants and bars along the marina, a supermarket five minutes away, valet parking, showers, wifi and a children's playground. Guests who want culture take the drive to the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island.

When to be there, and the honest downside

The season is the northern winter, roughly October through April, and the marina sells a winter berthing product because that is the shape of the year. The fixed date for 2026 is the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina Circuit on 6 December, which closes the Formula 1 season and fills the visitor quay. Owners planning a winter here should also note Ramadan, which falls on roughly 18 February to 19 March in 2026 and 8 February to 8 March in 2027, and changes the rhythm of hospitality across the Emirates.

The honest weakness is that there is very little to cruise to. The Gulf is shallow, the coastline between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is industrial or built, and the islands offshore do not offer anything like the Balearics or the Aegean. A yacht based at Yas is berthed at a destination, with no cruising ground opening from it. The Gulf summer is not usable, the passage back to the Mediterranean is a long delivery through a security-sensitive region, and for most owners the marina works as one half of a pair with a European base.
