What Survitec actually is, and who owns it

The modern Survitec Group was assembled in 2000 around RFD, a company Reginald Foster Dagnall started in a Surrey garden shed in 1920 to keep ditched aircrew afloat, and Beaufort, a separate safety equipment maker dating to 1852. Montagu Private Equity bought the combined group for GBP 146 million in 2004, and Warburg Pincus bought it from Montagu for GBP 280 million in January 2010, which is the ownership structure that still applies: Survitec is not listed and answers to a private equity holder rather than public shareholders.

Today the group runs from Birkenhead, Merseyside, with more than 2,000 employees, over 700 trained service engineers and, by its own count, 400-plus accredited service stations across 2,000 ports in 96 countries. That network is the actual product for a lot of buyers: a superyacht or a cruise ship needs its liferafts recertified on a fixed schedule wherever it happens to be, and Survitec's pitch is that its stamp is recognised at more ports than any rival's.

A group built by acquisition, not by one product line

The acquisition list explains why a Survitec-branded liferaft can arrive under several different names. DSB, a German inflatable boat maker, came in 2001. Revere Supply of Florida followed in 2010. Then 2011 brought two large purchases in one year: Cosalt Marine for GBP 31 million, which added UK commercial liferaft servicing capacity, and Zodiac's commercial liferaft and marine evacuation system business, which is why the group's SOLAS liferafts are now marketed as SurvitecZodiac. Crewsaver, a well known British lifejacket and watersports safety brand, was bought the same year and now carries the group's leisure ISO liferaft line.

The current portfolio, per Survitec's own brand page, runs to fourteen names: Survitec itself, RFD ("the original Survitec brand"), SurvitecZodiac, DSB, RFD Toyo for the Japanese market, the US commercial brand Elliot, Maritime Protection for inert gas fire suppression, Novenco for water mist firefighting, Crewsaver, the kayak safety brand Yak, the Italian leisure and military inflatables maker Eurovinil, HeliPPE for rental personal protective equipment, Biardo survival suits and the protective clothing maker Hansen Protection. A buyer dealing with any one of these is, in practice, dealing with Survitec's service network and Survitec's pricing, whatever name is on the box. Crewsaver itself had already built a separate reputation in lifejackets and watersports safety gear before the purchase, and it is the Crewsaver name, not Survitec, that appears on the leisure ISO liferaft box a yacht owner is most likely to actually buy.

One group's name ends up on liferafts sold as SurvitecZodiac, RFD, Elliot and Crewsaver, so the badge on the canister says less than the service network behind it.

The SOLAS davit-launch liferaft, and what it actually does in the water

A davit-launch liferaft is lowered under power from a purpose-built crane rather than thrown over the side, which matters on anything from a large yacht to a cruise ship where a full evacuation has to move a lot of people quickly and in order. Survitec's version, sold under the SurvitecZodiac and RFD Surviva names, is rated across five capacities from 12 to 37 people, packed into glass reinforced plastic containers that scale from 1156 x 612 x 584 mm at the small end to 1500 x 950 x 945 mm for the 37 person unit, and the system is rated to a 46 metre drop height, which covers everything from a yacht's boat deck to a large cruise ship's upper decks.

The self-righting claim is the part worth checking rather than taking on faith: Survitec's own data sheet states the raft rights itself in under a minute even when it inflates upside down, which is the failure mode that actually kills people in a real launch, since a liferaft that comes off a davit and settles canopy-down in a seaway is far more dangerous than a slow inflation. Independent confirmation of that specific number was not found in this research; it comes from Survitec's own datasheet and SOLAS index listing, not a third party test, and is reported here as the manufacturer's claim.

The leisure ISO raft a yacht owner actually buys, and what it costs

Unlike the SOLAS commercial line, which is quoted through a dealer and never listed, Survitec's leisure ISO 9650-1 and ISO 9650-2 raft is sold as an ordinary retail product under the Crewsaver name, and chandlery pricing is public. Cactus Navigation listed the 4-person under-24-hour container model at GBP 1,999.96 including VAT against an RRP of GBP 2,150 in 2026, with an 8-person valise at GBP 2,099.95, a 10-person canister at GBP 2,884.96 and a 12-person canister at GBP 2,986.96. A separate US retailer, Life Raft Professionals, listed the same ISO Ocean raft at a flat USD 2,375 across the 4 to 12 person range, which lands in the same broad bracket once the currency and retailer margin are allowed for.

The raft itself is built from a polyurethane-coated fabric with a double inflatable floor, a SOLAS-standard canopy design carried down from the commercial line, and a semi-rigid boarding ramp, and it carries a three year service interval as standard rather than the annual cycle a SOLAS raft needs. Buyers choose between a less than 24 hour, a more than 24 hour, or a SOLAS B emergency pack, which changes what survival kit ships inside the canister and is the actual lever on price within a given capacity, more than the capacity itself.

How the leisure raft actually compares to Ocean Safety and Viking

Ocean Safety and Viking are independent competitors, not Survitec brands, and a like-for-like comparison published by Invicta Racing set all three side by side. Ocean Safety's Ocean ISO uses a polyurethane-nylon laminate with 4 to 5 ballast pockets of roughly 75 litres each, a 4-person valise weighing about 28 kg. Viking's RescYou range is built from natural rubber with an acrylic or silicone-coated nylon shell, vacuum-packed for storage life, and the reviewer rated it strongest on cold-weather flexibility. Survitec and RFD's Leisure ISO line, by contrast, uses the same polyurethane-coated fabric and double inflatable floor as the SOLAS Surviva platform it descends from, which the review states makes it markedly heavier than either competitor for an equivalent capacity, without giving an exact weight.

The reviewer's own conclusion was blunt: "the raft is defined by the standard, not the badge," and for a fast sportsboat an ISO 9650-1 Type 1 Group A configuration beats a SOLAS-derived raft on weight regardless of brand. Their practical advice was to choose by which brand has a service station near where the boat actually sails, not by brand loyalty. That is a real weakness on Survitec's own product, not just marketing spin from a rival, and it is worth weighing against the service-network argument in the opposite direction: a Survitec raft is recognised at more ports, but it is a heavier raft to carry there.

What actually happens when the raft goes back for service

Yachting World's Theo Stocker visited a Survitec facility and was shown the process by a Survitec engineer, Matthew Bridge. The raft is inflated to full working pressure and left to stabilise, with a pressure reading taken and then rechecked an hour later specifically to catch a leak too slow to show up immediately. Inflation hoses, which have a five year service life, are inspected and replaced on schedule rather than waited out to failure, and perishable survival kit inside the canister, flares, food, water, batteries, first aid supplies and any medication, is checked and replaced as needed rather than assumed good.

Bridge's practical advice to an owner deploying the raft for real was equally specific: check the painter is properly secured before the raft goes over the side, because it will not inflate the instant it hits the water. The crew has to pay out the rest of the painter line and then give it one sharp tug to trigger inflation, a detail that matters in a genuine emergency and is easy to get wrong under stress if it has never been practised. No figure for how many liferafts Survitec services annually, or how service pricing scales with capacity beyond that GBP 200 starting point, was found in this research.
