Un siglo de piel italiana
Poltrona Frau la fundó en 1912 Renzo Frau, un artesano nacido en Cerdeña que montó su taller en Turín. The fire code, and how to make it someone else's problem
The IMO 2010 Fire Test Procedures Code has governed the flammability of upholstered furniture, curtains and bedding aboard ship since 1 July 2012, and Part A of the REG Yacht Code has applied since January 2019 to yachts of 24 m and over in commercial use. Unless a space carries sprinklers or an equivalent approved fixed system, its upholstery and suspended textiles must be inherently fire retardant.
Poltrona Frau does not publish a blanket certification, and the In Motion process is built around meeting a written customer specification. That is the lever. The certification requirement belongs in the purchase order, with the test certificates named as a deliverable, before any hide is cut. An owner who leaves it until the flag surveyor arrives is looking at recovering the saloon.
What it costs, and how it is bought
There is no price list for marine work. A residential benchmark helps with scale, and an authorised European dealer listed the Archibald armchair, one of the pieces that went aboard the Puro 35P, at EUR 5,124 in July 2026. Bespoke leather panelling, headboards and helm seats are priced by drawing and by hide consumption, and hide consumption is where the surprises live.
Leather is bought by the whole skin and cut around its flaws, so a large panel with a strict grain match wastes far more hide than a chair does. Ask for the quote to state the yield assumption and who carries the cost if a batch of hides fails inspection. That single clause moves the number more than any negotiation on the day rate.
Repair, recolouring and the fifteen-year interior
Dyed-through leather is the easiest premium material to live with over a long ownership, because minor damage can be worked back into the hide and the colour is not a skin. Specialist leather restorers operate in every refit centre in the Mediterranean and in Florida, and Poltrona Frau's own network handles warranty and refurbishment work.
The failure that cannot be fixed locally is a discontinued colour. Record the Colorsphere reference for every hide in the yacht's manual, and buy spare skins at the time of the order for the pieces that take the most wear. Hides age, so a skin bought in year eight will not match a skin bought in year one even under the same reference.
Against the alternatives, and who should buy elsewhere
Against Minotti or any residential furniture house, Poltrona Frau is the one with a division set up to answer technical questions in writing.
