Burdifilek

Burdifilek spent thirty years designing Holt Renfrew counters, Joe Fresh flagships and Neiman Marcus floors before it ever drew a stateroom. In 2023 the Toronto studio delivered its first yacht interior, a 60 metre Amels called Entourage, and within a year that debut had won the platform's most decorated interior award. It remains, as of this research, the studio's only completed yacht.

A Toronto Studio Built on Retail, Not the Sea

Burdifilek was founded in Toronto in 1993 by Diego Burdi and Paul Filek, who met in 1988 as students at what was then Ryerson's School of Interior Design, now Toronto Metropolitan University. Several company databases and the studio's own 25th anniversary coverage in Retail Insider, published February 2018, agree on 1993 as the founding year, though at least one design-press profile has printed 1997. The pair worked separately for years before forming the partnership, drawn together by a shared design sensibility and, by their own account, a near-telepathic working relationship.

By the time Retail Insider marked that 25th year, the studio had grown to around 35 people and had collected more than 150 industry design awards without ever chasing scale for its own sake. Paul Filek's stated approach was blunt: 'We're not going to be a studio of 400 people because it is not about the amount of work we produce. It is about the type of project we produce.' That restraint, applied for three decades to shops and hotels, is the same instinct the studio later brought to a superyacht it had never been trained to draw.

What the Studio Actually Sells: Retail, Hospitality and Residential

This is a commercial and residential interior design practice, not a marine one. Its client list runs from specialty brands such as Club Monaco, Mackage and Indigo to department stores including Holt Renfrew and Neiman Marcus, plus international names such as Nike, the W Hotel Atlanta, Stratus Vineyards and the Galleria Luxury Hall West in Seoul. The Toronto flagship redesign for Holt Renfrew on Bloor Street covered a 16,160 square foot first floor of cosmetics, fine jewellery and personal shopping space, reported by VMSD. The Joe Fresh flagship it built inside a former Fifth Avenue bank in New York, in 2012, turned 14,000 square feet of a landmarked building into retail floor space.

The studio's own description of its method splits by project type: in retail, the product is the hero and the interior is the backdrop; in hospitality and residential work, the space itself is the product being sold. Nothing in that thirty year portfolio, as reported across Retail Insider, VMSD and the studio's own trade coverage, touches a boat of any size before 2023. When Robb Report wrote up Entourage on delivery, its own headline called Burdifilek a 'residential designer' rather than a yacht studio, which is the accurate description: this was a genuine outsider commission, not a marine specialist adding a new size class.

How a Retail Studio Ended Up on a 60 Metre Amels

Entourage began under the working name Project Witchcraft, as the second hull of the Amels 60 Limited Editions, the semi-custom series built by Damen's Amels yard in the Netherlands. The exterior and naval architecture came from Espen Oeino, who has a separate entry on this site; the owner and the project's build manager, Moran Yacht & Ship, brought in Burdifilek for the interior. The yacht launched in July 2022 and was delivered in late February 2023, with the owner reported to have boarded for the first time that spring. Project manager Arie Midavaine of Damen Yachting called it a project where 'all parties involved have pulled together,' and Moran's Sean Moran thanked the yard's workers and the owner's team on delivery.

BOAT International's account of the commission is the clearest record of how far outside its normal world the studio had stepped. Diego Burdi attended his first superyacht show while Entourage was still being designed, took in eight vessels in a single day and came away describing the experience in one line: 'there's a lot going on here.' That reaction, from a designer thirty years into a career built on restraint, set the direction for the whole project rather than pushing him toward the yacht industry's usual visual density.

The Quiet Colour Palette

Dezeen's June 2024 feature on the finished interior, photographed by Guillaume Plisson, described Burdifilek's approach as a deliberate rejection of yacht-interior abundance. Burdi put it directly: 'We hid everything. We hid all the functionality so you're just looking at the beauty.' The result is a restrained, largely monochromatic scheme built from bleached wood, silky carpets, curved sofas and organic shapes, with slanted half-wall skins in the bedrooms for texture and, at the owner's request, ceilings left free of the domes that usually house yacht lighting and air handling.

The layout carries the same discipline. The main deck owner's suite runs the width of the yacht with a fold-down balcony, two bathrooms and an adjoining twin guest suite, reported consistently by BOAT International, Damen Yachting and Yacht Style. The staircase was reversed and pushed outside the main volume specifically to free up passageway space below. Long, unbroken strips of glazing replace the trapeze-shaped windows carried by the first Amels 60, Come Together, a change both BOAT International and Damen Yachting attribute to the owner's brief. Aft, the bridge deck and sundeck were extended by 1.5 metres to hold a jacuzzi, a bar and L-shaped seating, and the beach club below carries a sauna, a gym and a day head.

Debut Design, Immediate Recognition

Entourage won Best Interior Design for motor yachts of 500GT and above at the 2024 BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards, and took the Displacement Motor Yachts 500 to 999GT category at the 2024 World Superyacht Awards, confirmed by both Damen Yachting's and Amels's own announcements of the results. Judges at the Design & Innovation Awards called the interior 'a very elegant and different design,' and specifically flagged how unusual that result is for a series yacht built on a shared platform rather than a one-off custom hull.

The wider industry has an ongoing argument about exactly this kind of commission. Coverage in SuperyachtNews of the land-versus-sea design question describes a real shift toward owners hiring land-based architects and designers, who arrive willing to question yacht-industry convention, against yacht specialists who argue their marine expertise engages with the vessel's operating environment in ways a retail or residential background cannot replicate. No named critic in the material this research found singled out Burdifilek or Entourage directly, and the awards suggest the judges were not troubled by the studio's lack of marine pedigree. But the debate is the frame the whole commission sits inside, and any owner considering a similarly outside-the-industry designer should expect that question to be asked.

The Amels 60 Limited Editions Platform

The Amels 60 is a semi-custom design: the hull, the naval architecture and the core technical systems are standardised across the series, while the interior fit-out is fully custom and owners can adapt elements of the superstructure and deck arrangement, such as helipad provision, jacuzzis, balconies, sea terraces and a full-width bridge. Superyacht Times, reporting on the series, describes the model as combining platform efficiency with custom build techniques specifically to bring delivery down to three years or less, well inside what a fully bespoke hull of this size normally takes. Propulsion is a hybrid, IMO Tier III compliant diesel-electric system capable of silent running under electric power at low speed, with a top speed of 15.5 knots and a transatlantic range of 4,500 nautical miles at 13 knots.

Entourage herself illustrates how the model works in practice: BOAT International reported that the hull was laid down speculatively in 2020, before an owner had signed for her, which is how the yard compresses the wait an owner otherwise faces from a blank-sheet commission. The standard new-build list price for the platform is reported at EUR79 million by brokerage sources including Romeo United Yachts, a figure that covers the hull, the engineering and Espen Oeino's exterior; the interior scope that Burdifilek was appointed for sits on top of that base as a separate, uncosted line.

What a Commission Here Actually Costs, and What Is Not Published

No source found in this research breaks out what the owner paid Burdifilek specifically for the Entourage interior, separate from the yard's own build price, and the studio publishes no fee scale of its own, which matches the pattern across every design house in this class. What is published instead is the resale evidence: Entourage was listed for sale in October 2025 through Moran Yacht & Ship, the first time she had come to market since her 2023 delivery, at an asking price of EUR74 million.

That figure sits close to the EUR75 million to EUR79 million range quoted elsewhere for new and nearly-new Amels 60s on the brokerage market, which is a useful, honest data point for a prospective owner: an award-winning, heavily bespoke interior on this platform does not appear to command an obvious premium over the series' own going rate two years on. For an owner weighing a Burdifilek-style outside commission against a marine-specialist interior house, the resale record so far suggests the choice is unlikely to move the number a broker eventually writes on the yacht.

One Yacht In, and What Comes Next

As of the most recent trade coverage found for this profile, Entourage remains Burdifilek's only completed yacht interior. BOAT International's own account of the project reported that Burdi and Filek had 'got the yachting bug' during the commission and were looking for a next opportunity to apply their approach to another yacht, but no second marine project had been announced at the time of writing.

That single-project record is worth stating plainly next to the award. Measured against studios elsewhere in this directory with dozens of delivered hulls, Burdifilek is a first-time entrant whose debut happened to win, on a platform where Espen Oeino and Damen carried every structural and engineering risk. An owner hiring the studio today would be commissioning its second superyacht interior at most, not its twentieth and should weigh that thin track record against the fact that it currently holds the Amels 60 series' most decorated interior.

Praktische Angaben

Was Eigner und Crew berichten

Was gut ist und worauf zu achten ist

Stärken

  • A debut that won the platform's top interior awardBest Interior Design at the 2024 BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards and a category win at the 2024 World Superyacht Awards, an unusual result for a studio's first yacht and for a semi-custom series hull
  • Three decades of retail and hospitality discipline behind the restraintwork for Holt Renfrew, Neiman Marcus and Nike built a specific skill in stripping a space back to its essentials, which is exactly the quality judges and Dezeen both singled out in the finished interior
  • The structural and marine risk sat with proven specialistsEspen Oeino handled the exterior and naval architecture and Damen's Amels yard handled the engineering, so Burdifilek's inexperience with yacht construction was insulated by a platform that was already resolved before the interior brief began
  • Genuinely bespoke changes to a shared platformthe long glazing strips, the reversed staircase and the extended sundeck were substantial enough departures from the first Amels 60 that they were owner-driven, not decorative, choices

Worauf zu achten ist

  • Exactly one completed yacht interiorthere is no second or third project to check for consistency, and no evidence yet of how the studio handles a harder brief, a difficult owner or a yard less accommodating than Amels
  • No way to isolate what the interior actually costthe EUR79 million platform price is published; Burdifilek's own fee for the interior scope is not broken out anywhere in the public record
  • No independent owner or captain testimony yeteverything public traces back to the designers' own press quotes or to brokerage copy written to sell the boat
  • No marine engineering or naval architecture capability of its ownthe studio depends entirely on Espen Oeino and Damen for anything structural, so it is not a fit for an owner who wants one office to own the whole design
  • Resale evidence suggests no clear price premiumEntourage's October 2025 asking price of EUR74 million sits inside the ordinary range quoted for new and nearly-new Amels 60s, so the award-winning interior does not visibly move the number a broker writes on the yacht

Für wen: Owners drawn to a genuinely outside eye on a semi-custom Amels hull, who want a retail-trained restraint applied to a superyacht interior and are comfortable that the studio has one completed yacht to its name rather than a marine track record.
