Azure e De Voogt sugli esterni

Propulsione ibrida a 94 metri

A yacht that has already changed hands once

Viva was delivered to the US billionaire Frank Fertitta III, best known as the co-founder of UFC parent company Zuffa, in 2021, and stayed in his ownership for barely three years before selling in August 2024 to Citadel hedge fund founder Kenneth Griffin. Neither owner has spoken publicly about the sale or given a reason for it, which is typical for yachts at this level - ownership changes are usually confirmed only after the fact, through flag-registry and insurance filings rather than any announcement.

A resale inside three years is unusually quick for a full-custom Feadship of this size and cost, and it means Viva's brief working life has already been split between two very different owners from two very different industries, sport and finance, without any public record of what either one wanted changed. Nothing in her published specification suggests a refit followed the sale, so the yacht Griffin took on is understood to be essentially the yacht Fertitta commissioned. Fertitta built his fortune with brother Lorenzo through Station Casinos before the pair bought into mixed martial arts, while Griffin's wealth comes from Citadel, the hedge fund he founded in 1990 - two very different American fortunes now separated by nothing more than one same yacht.

Motori e impianti

Main enginesTwin MTU 16V 4000 M73L diesels, approximately 2880 kW (about 3916 hp) each at 2050 rpm, driving the diesel-electric hybrid propulsion train.
Hybrid propulsionDiesel-electric hybrid system allowing quiet cruising at 12 knots on generator and battery power alone, with the main MTU diesels engaged directly for a top speed of about 20 knots. A battery bank is used to keep generator loading efficient and the power grid smooth.
GeneratorsReported as 3 x Caterpillar C18 ACERT gensets, around 400 kWe each at 1500 rpm. The figure is repeated across yacht spec databases but was not found in a class society document or Feadship's own technical page.
Emissions treatmentTier III selective catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters fitted to control exhaust emissions, per build-era reporting.
Fuel tankageReported at roughly 280,000 to 289,000 litres across two separate spec databases. The figures are close but not identical, so treat as approximate.
Fresh water and watermakerFresh water capacity reported at roughly 70,000 to 71,000 litres. Watermaker make and capacity were not found in any public source.
RangeQuoted at 5500 nm at 12-knot cruise speed by one spec database. Not independently corroborated elsewhere, so treat as unverified.
Hull and superstructureSteel hull, aluminium superstructure, teak decking. Naval architecture by Feadship De Voogt with exterior styling from Studio De Voogt and Azure Yacht Design.
Stabilisers, thrusters and engine-room accessNot disclosed in any public source found. Neither Feadship's own yacht page nor the major spec databases list stabiliser or thruster models or describe engine-room access.

Cosa riferiscono armatori ed equipaggi

Cosa convince e cosa va valutato

Punti di forza

  • Genuinely quiet hybrid cruising, not just a marketing claimThe 12-knot diesel-electric cruise mode was validated by an independent judging panel when she won Motor Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards in 2022, giving the hybrid claim weight beyond Feadship's own materials.
  • Unusual, verifiable design briefThe build owner, a repeat Feadship client reported as Frank Fertitta III, required the 94m yacht to have no greater environmental impact than his prior 62m Feadship. This constraint is reported consistently by Boat International, Superyachts.com and Daily Nautica, not only repeated from a single press release.
  • Award-recognised interiorPeter Marino's open beach-house interior was cited by name in the World Superyacht Awards recognition, giving the design claim some third-party weight beyond Feadship's and Marino's own promotion of the project.

Da valutare

  • September 2024 bridge strike in Fort LauderdaleThe yacht, still reported under the Viva name at the time, became wedged against the 17th Street Bridge on the New River. SuperyachtNews and autoevolution both covered the incident, reporting no confirmed official cause and only cosmetic damage, but it is a real operational black mark on the vessel's record.
  • Core hybrid hardware numbers rest on a thin sourcing baseThe generator make and model (3 x Caterpillar C18 ACERT) and the battery bank specifics are repeated across yacht database sites but were not found in a class society document, Feadship's own technical page or a named engineering source. Treat these as provisionally sourced rather than confirmed.
  • Guest and crew figures disagree sharply between eras and are unreconciledBuild-era sources list 14 guests in 7 cabins with about 18 crew, while Boat International's current directory entry under the Defy name lists 16 guests in 8 staterooms with 38 crew. No source explains the change, so it may reflect an unreported refit after the 2024 sale or simply inconsistent secondary reporting.
  • Sale to Ken Griffin never officially confirmedThe renaming to Defy and Ken Griffin's ownership are widely reported by SuperyachtFan, Boat International and general news outlets, but no party has confirmed a sale price. Press estimates cluster loosely between 175 million and 200 million dollars, with some outlets citing figures as high as 250 million, and none of these should be treated as verified.
