Azzam

Who owns her now

Azzam was built for Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, whose office set the brief for the fastest, quietest large yacht Lurssen could deliver. He died in May 2022, and no government or family office has since issued a formal statement about who now holds the yacht.

Multiple outlets report that control has passed informally to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who succeeded his half-brother as UAE President, which would keep Azzam within the same family and the same state apparatus that commissioned her. That is the widely reported version, not a confirmed one - there is no public transfer of registration or ownership on record, which makes the current owner of the world's most famous yacht one of its least documented facts.

Motori e impianti

PropulsionCODAG arrangement: two diesel engines and two gas turbines, each rated around 23,500 hp (17,500 kW), reported as the largest engine package fitted to a yacht at delivery.
SpeedTop speed reported between 30 and 33 knots depending on source; cruising speed reported at 12 knots. No independently published sea-trial figure settles the exact maximum.
Hull and beamSteel hull, aluminium superstructure, 20.8 m beam. Fuel capacity reported around 1 million litres.
Water systemsReported to use waste heat recovered from the engines to run the desalination plant - Lurssen is credited as the first yacht-builder to fit this, per Ship Technology; not confirmed by a second source.

Cosa riferiscono armatori ed equipaggi

Cosa convince e cosa va valutato

Punti di forza

  • Genuinely the fastest yacht of her sizeA CODAG plant combining diesels and gas turbines was built specifically so a 180 m hull could make quick, comfortable passages to a private island off Abu Dhabi - a real operational requirement, not a marketing number.
  • First-of-its-kind waste-heat desalinationReported as the first Lurssen yacht to run its freshwater desalination off recovered engine waste heat, an efficiency measure most yachts of any size still do not carry.
  • The scale itself is the achievementUnder three years from steel-cutting to delivery for the longest yacht ever built at the time remains a genuine engineering and yard-management feat, independent of any single feature.

Da valutare

  • Almost nothing about the interior is publicShip Technology itself notes the interior layout is highly confidential; a buyer or a curious reader gets exterior specifications and almost no verified detail on the 50-odd suites beyond the headline salon dimensions.
  • No confirmed current ownerThe presumed post-2022 transfer to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is reported widely but never formally confirmed - a rare case where even the basic question of who owns the world's most famous yacht is unsettled in public record.
  • Top speed is a range, not a numberPublic figures split between 30 and 33 knots with no independently published trial to settle it, which is a small but real gap for the single fact most people ask about this yacht.

Informazioni pratiche

Build costReported at around US$600 million across multiple sources (Ship Technology, Boat International), one of the few Azzam figures that is not disputed.
Running costNo public figure has ever been confirmed. At this scale, informed estimates run into the tens of millions a year, but nothing named has been published.
CrewReported crew size varies by source from about 50 to 80; Lurssen and the owner's office have never confirmed a figure.
Ownership since 2022Built for and long associated with Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE until his death in 2022. Ownership is widely reported to have passed informally to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the current UAE President, but no formal transfer has been confirmed - treat this as reported, not established.
CharterNot for charter. Azzam operates as a private and state-linked yacht with no public availability.
Where she has been seenPhotographed and reported at Lurssen's own Lemwerder yard for build and maintenance, and at Vigo and Cadiz in Spain on delivery-era and later passages - real port calls rather than press-release locations.
