What the crew and the designer say about living with her

Sam Sorgiovanni's brief, in his own words, was to build "something that was like nothing else", and one detail he points to is that what reads as black paint on the superstructure is "actually glass". The four-level staircase that winds through the yacht was inspired by vines he saw wrapping tree trunks in Bali's Monkey Forest, and took, in his account, well over a year to design and build by hand in teak and stainless steel. The same brief produced the nearly four metre glass doors on the upper deck terrace, the largest Oceanco has ever installed, flush-mounted on invisible tracks so the whole opening can close weathertight in bad weather.

Barbara's own captain has described the more practical side of owning her: the crew washes the yacht every day specifically to protect the high-gloss paint from damage. He also told Boat International about a pet clownfish that went missing from an interior tank and turned up, alive, down in the engine room bilge. The chief stewardess separately described the cinema seating, with "3D options and PlayStation and every game you can imagine", the kind of detail that only someone who works the room every day would think to mention.

Cosa riferiscono armatori ed equipaggi

Cosa convince e cosa va valutato

Punti di forza

  • The largest glass doors Oceanco has ever installedNearly four metres tall, single-pane and flush-mounted on invisible automated tracks, the upper-deck terrace doors were engineered to stay weather-tight while opening the room fully to the sea.
  • A four-level staircase that took over a year to build by handInspired by vines wrapping tree trunks that Sorgiovanni saw in Bali's Monkey Forest, the teak and stainless steel stair was welded and ground in individual segments before being assembled through the yacht's four decks.
  • Range built for genuine long-distance cruising, not just coastal charterAt 8,300 nautical miles, Barbara's range is unusually long for an 88 metre yacht, giving an owner the reach for real ocean passages rather than short seasonal hops.

Da valutare

  • The glass doors that define the yacht also complicated her engineeringLloyd's classification rules required all structural strength to come from the aluminium superstructure alone, even around the huge glass openings; glass is heavier than aluminium and flexes differently, which Boat International reported made the load calculations for this deck genuinely difficult.
  • The dark high-gloss hull is high-maintenance by the crew's own accountBarbara's own captain said the crew washes the yacht every day specifically to prevent damage to the paint, a routine cost of the finish that gives the yacht its look.
  • She is no longer open to charter guestsBarbara was previously offered for charter but yacht-industry brokers now list her as no longer available, meaning the interior most written about is currently accessible only to her owner's own guests.
